Fab Flash: Designers Partner with Gilt.com

A new partnership has just been formed that will allow sample sale fans to get their fix from the comfort of their own home! The Council of Fashion Designers of America has joined with Gilt.com to give CFDA members - think Marc Jacobs, Nanette Lepore - the option of doing their sample sales online.

Already, Marchesa, Rachel Roy, and Bulgari have teamed with Gilt Groupe's Gilt.com for the site's one-day designer-specific online sales, and Behnaz Sarafpour and Sari Gueron have upcoming sales in the works. Gilt Groupe offers 3-4 online sales per week - for sale access, you must be a referred member, but once accepted, there are no fees involved. Everyone loves a sample sale, right?!

Fab How-To: Sample Sale Shopping

Now that we've shown you a peek into Spring, as well as some of the new Fall 2007 looks, if you are anything like me, you've already begun to clean out your closet to ensure there's ample space in there for what's to come! Stores are still having major sales and private brands are conducting their own and much awaited sample sales.

The slashed price tags can really make your tail wag, but beware! You don't want to wind up with a closet full of junk...no less, last season's junk. For a few helpful tips from a shopping junkie on how to tackle sample sales, read more

Lesson One: Try and resist the need for an item simply because it seems like such a good deal. At the time it may seem like a fab purchase, but if realistically you are never going to put it on, then put it down!
Lesson Two: Don’t buy it if it doesn't fit you while you are in the store. I can't tell you how many times I thought, "this will look great after I lose the weight I've been meaning to shed." If you never get around to losing the weight, the item will never fit. Also if something requires a costly alteration, consider if it's really worth the investment.
Lesson Three: Slow down shopper! If you are rushing but want to buy something so you feel a sense of accomplishment, chances are that you won't make a good choice. Shop when you've got the time to give your purchases proper smarts.
Lesson Four: Look for quality, not quantity. It's better to own a few nice investment staples than to own a closet full of trendy and shoddy items that will soon be out of style and will fall apart. Train yourself to splurge on timeless pieces.
Lesson Five: Spring clean before you go to a sample sale. Have an idea of what you need so that you won't be tempted to buy just anything that catches your eye. Your goal should be to get rid of anything that you haven't worn in two years (and that's a cushioned rule since I'm sentimental).
Tip: An additional helpful hint: make sure you wear clean, cute underwear that you don't mind others seeing. Often times sample sales are in huge warehouses or auditoriums with open changing rooms or none at all. Showing up commando at a sample sale is an etiquette and fashion DON'T!

You might be pleased to know that it's sample sale season again, although unfortunately most of them take place in London which would be annoying if you lived outside the capital. This week there is a Chloe sample sale held by fashion confidential offering up to 75% off clothing and accessories. All you have to do to attend is register your details here. Personally, I always like a good mooch round a sample sale in case there are any bargains to be found. How about you – do you shop at sample sales?

UK Sample Sale Round Up

There are several major sample sales taking place in London at the moment and I wouldn't want you to miss out! Firstly there is a Hermes Sample Sale currently on until 28th June with up to 50% off certain pieces. It's open 10am - 6pm at The Music Rooms 26 South Molton Lane, Mayfair, London, W1K 5LF.

Also, a slightly more affordable sale is taking place in North London. The French Connection and Nicole Farhi Sample Sale is open on 27th June from 9:30am – 4:30pm, 28th: 10am – 5pm, and Sunday 29th: 10am – 4pm. It's taking place at Centro One, 39 Camden Street, London, NW1 0DW with an entrance fee of £1.

If you live outside of London we don't want you to feel left out! So here's a Temperley London sale in Manchester in just under a month. It will take place at
Room B2B Three, The Urbis Gallery, Cathedral Gardens, Manchester, M4 3BG on Friday 25th July from 10am to 7pm and 26th July 10am to 5pm.

On Our Radar: Angels Costume Sale

If you're looking for a great costume in London, then look no further than Angels which is an Oscar-winning wardrobe supplier! Last year the store had it's first ever clearance sale and it attracted enormous queues of fashion lovers all hopeful to bag a unique bargain. They've decided to do it again to sell over 250,000 items dating from 1900 onwards.

Expect there to be a lot of military items (very Balmain) with prices fixed at £20 for all coats and helmets and £10 for caps. The sale will take place on Saturday 28th November from 8.30am to 5pm at 3 Boundary Road, Wembley, HA9 7ND. Happy Shopping!

Bank Holiday Sale News: Office Shoes

Good news if you're going to be stuck in London for this bank holiday weekend. Office Shoes are hosting a designer sample sale with up to 50% off designer shoes.

Bringing together shoes from Offspring, Office and Poste Mistress the sale will take place from 10-7pm on Friday 23rd, Saturday 24th, Sunday 25th and Monday 26th of May at the Truman Brewery, London, E1 6QR.

UPDATE: They have shoes by Dries Van Noten, Miu Miu and Repetto to name but a few. I went down their today and picked up a pair, to see them read more

I bought a pair of purple Repetto ballet pumps for £40. Not bad considering they usually retail for around £100. I would recommend getting down there ASAP though as I'm sure they will have sold out of the good stuff by Monday.

They had a lot of Poste Mistress vintage style heels that were so cute for around £40.

Casa Shops: Taigan

As the list of online designer sample sales grows, a new web shop has opened with a slightly different business plan. Taigan is a community of over 30 (and growing) specialty shops, boutiques, and galleries nationwide for members only. The site offers access to small, upscale shops in cities as far and wide as Chattanooga, TN and Aspen, CO, which may not otherwise have an ecommerce site.

Taigan gets its name from a rare hunting dog which is said to have "a discerning eye and keen sense of awareness," an analogy for the company, which hunt for all things little-known and beautiful around the country. Purveyor of art, antiques, home décor, fashion, and jewelry you'd be hard-pressed to find elsewhere online, Taigan does seem to have a card up its sleeve. But, after your 14-day trial is complete, membership costs $15 a month or $165 per year. For the average shopper, I'm not sure the cost is justifiable, but it certainly might be worth it for an interior designer.
