The Lovely Bones - See It or Skip It?

The Lovely Bones is a new movie based on the popular and acclaimed novel by Alice Sebold about Susie Salmon (played by Saoirse Ronan), a teenager who's murdered and the narrates the tale of her family trying to deal with the consequences and search for justice. Rachel Weisz and Mark Wahlberg star as her parents, with Susan Sarandon and Stanley Tucci also appearing in the film. Peter Jackson directs, and the film is due to be released in January 2010, so check out the trailer and let me know - will you see it or skip it?

Movie Preview: Death Defying Acts

Hmm. . . a movie with two relatively big-ish actors (Catherine Zeta-Jones is perhaps more recognizable, but Guy Pearce is an exceptional actor, as you may recall from a little something called Memento) that has been completed for many months but gets practically no U.S. promotion whatsoever, even as its release date (July 11) fast approaches? It kinda makes you wonder about this Harry Houdini drama, Death Defying Acts.

Little Women director Gillian Armstrong leads the dramatic tale of escapism and romance. The story takes place in 1926 Britain where Houdini "enters into a passionate affair with a Scottish psychic (Zeta-Jones). The psychic and her daughter (Saoirse Ronan) attempt to con Houdini during a highly publicized séance to contact his mother whose death has haunted him for many years. However, all does not go to plan."

The story has so much potential to be dark and intriguing, and I am always curious about what Guy Pearce is up to. Plus, there's a pre-Atonement (and thus pre-Oscar nom) Saoirse Ronan and she is a pretty great little actress.

The movie already had an Australian premiere and I will probably give it a shot when it comes to a theater near me. To check out the trailer, read more.

E! is showing the programme 50 Cutest Child Stars: All Grown Up on TV tonight and it got me thinking about the current group of child stars gracing our cinema screens. Abigail Breslin was inducted into the Girl Scouts earlier this week and it was great to see one of the world's most famous 11-year-olds involved with such a "normal" childhood activity. I'm amazed by the acting skills of all of these young performers, but I want to know what you think. So tell me: who is your favourite young actress?

Catherine Zeta-Jones Takes Death Defying Acts Down Under

The stars of Death Defying Acts enjoyed the Australian sunshine at the film's press call in Sydney today, before getting glammed up for the premiere. Catherine Zeta-Jones worked two different dresses, picking pink for the day and a monochrome pattern for the premiere - which outfit do you prefer? I love how mumsy she looks with her arm around on-screen daughter Saoirse Ronan. Maybe that hug will help mend Saoirse's disappointment at missing out on the Empire Awards' Best Newcomer, which went to Sam Riley at the London ceremony last night. She also got some love at the premiere from the film's Australian director Gillian Armstrong. How adorable is Guy Pearce too, laughing with his smiling wife Kate. Good times!

The movie, which was filmed at various locations in London and Edinburgh, tells the story of escapologist Harry Houdini's tour of Britain in 1926. Houdini (Pearce) starts an affair with a Scottish psychic (Zeta-Jones) who, with the help of her daughter (Ronan), tries to con him during a highly publicised séance. It sounds like an interesting premise, so I hope it gets released in the UK some time soon.

Keira Doesn't Want To Know What You Think

Keira Knightley combined the latest trends with Ray Ban classics as she arrived in Venice yesterday. She wore a beautiful dress for the photocall of her period peice Atonement which opened up the Venice Film Festival. The buzz has already started about her performance but that being said, Keira does all that she can to avoid reading what the media has to say about her, for better or for worse. She said,

"Once you become famous you get completely dehumanized. I think people forget there is a person in there trying to deal with it. Partly the way you deal with it is by not reading, not looking and seeing any of it and burying your head in the sand. It is the only path to sanity."

We know Keira has dealt with some pretty bad backlash from the media about her weight, so we don't blame her for wanting to stay away from it. We just hope it doesn't make her quit acting altogether, because we'd miss her on the big screen.

First Look: Atonement

I was just saying how super cute I think James McAvoy is and here we are with a new full-length trailer for his WW II period movie Atonement, based on the novel by Ian McEwan and also starring Keira Knightley. Another reason I'm intrigued by this movie: Saoirse Ronan, the young Irish actress who was recently cast to play Susie in Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Lovely Bones plays a key role.

From what I can tell in the trailer, McAvoy's character Robbie and Knightley's character Cecilia are having an illicit love affair when Ronan's character Briony accuses Robbie of something and he's sent away. The trailer has that desperately romantic period piece feeling to it, so to check it out before the movie opens December 7 in the U.S. (September 7 in the UK), read more

Irish Actress Cast to play Susie in The Lovely Bones

Well, it looks like someone in Hollywood agrees with all of you who commented in the casting news about Rachel Weisz and Ryan Gosling joining The Lovely Bones: the girl at the center of the story will not be played by a Fanning, nor is she a mainstream name - yet. Young Irish actress Saoirse Ronan will play the difficult role of Susie, a 14-year-old girl who is raped and killed, and who narrates the story from heaven. Weisz and Gosling will play Susie's parents in Peter Jackson's adaptation of the bestselling novel.

Variety continues:

Ronan, 13, has several movies awaiting release, including Death Defying Acts, starring Catherine Zeta-Jones and Guy Pearce, and I Could Never Be Your Woman, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Paul Rudd. This summer, she films The City of Ember.

Oscar Stars Continue To Shine At The Governor's Ball

Oscar night means parties galore, and so we move on to the Governor's Ball. How gorgeous did Anne Marie Duff look in her navy gown? Meanwhile her hubby James McAvoy was holding hands with his young costar Saoirse Ronan as they ate dinner. How many of you would like her seat? I know I would. The stars were in high spirits following the ceremony tucking into food and gorgeous desserts whilst chatting, bonding, celebrating and horsing around for some great photos.
