The How-To Lounge: Save the Date Etiquette

Now that you're engaged, it's time to spread the word! Since wedding venues book up so quickly during wedding season, it's time to get planning. First things first - pick your date and secure your location. Once that's checked off your list, you'll need to alert your friends and family of your special day by sending a save the date. There's no right or wrong way to send a save the date, but there are some key points to remember.

Before you send the save the date, hammer out your guest list. There's no turning back after someone has been invited, so be certain that you won't be making any adjustments to your list.
Regardless of the size of your wedding, save the dates should be sent out 6-12 months prior to your wedding day. If you're having a destination wedding, the sooner you send them out the better.
Save the dates are meant to be much less formal than the wedding invitations, but they should be informative. Include your names, the date, time, and location. Some feel the save the date should match the wedding invitation, but that is completely discretionary so if you want to have fun with it, go for it!
If you're having a destination wedding, the save the dates should be much more revealing. Include hotel and airline information including phone numbers and any special rates or packages if applicable, rental car companies, a schedule of events (so guests know how long to book their travel), and the location of your wedding site.
If your guests are invited with a date, be sure to address the envelope properly so they can save the date, too.

You're engaged, and no doubt exploding with happiness, so what to do next? You got it, plan, plan, and plan!! As much as you want to shout your good news from the rooftops, sending your friends and family a save the date might be an easier way to spread the good word. After you choose the date and book the location, you're ready to have all your guests mark their calendars so they can join you on your special day. While there is no right or wrong way to send a save the date, I am here to offer some advice.

Regardless of the size of your wedding, you want all your friends and family to attend, so sending a save the date will give all your guests ample time to mark their calendars
Make certain you will not be adjusting your guest list before sending out your save the date as every person who receives one will be expecting a wedding invitation to follow
Save the dates should be sent out 6-12 months prior to your wedding day, obviously the sooner the better
While many people like their save the dates to match their wedding invitations, that is by no means a rule set in stone
Save the dates are not meant to be formal, so use your imagination and show your personality. Save the dates typically state the name of the bride and groom, the date, time and location

These days people rarely get married without sending save the date cards. They are wonderful because they let your guests know well in advance about your wedding. Although it's not absolutely necessary, if you're having a destination wedding, be sure to send save the date cards so your friends and family can think about travel arrangements. Once you have decided on the date and location of your wedding, mail the save the date cards out to your guests, at least 6-12 months in advance. Tech Dating 101: Do You Save Messages From Your Date?

One of the benefits of of digital technology is that every email, text, and voicemail is easily saved, stored, and relived. It's helpful when you're dating someone - I think it's both fun and cute to reread old messages. (Though I suppose this can get dicey when trying to cut your ex out of your digital life, but that's a topic for another day). When it's good - it's great!

I hadn't thought too much about it until a recently engaged friend unearthed a years-long log of emails and text messages, starting with the first email her now-fiance sent the morning after they met. My other friends and I teased her at first, but then realized that reading through her saved emails was almost like reading a book of the history of their relationship. Plus, it's fun to look back one month, six months, or even a year into the past to see what was going on, even if they're mundane messages about what movie to catch or what to make for dinner that night.

Besides its historical significance, saving messages from someone you're dating is also helpful when you're starting a new relationship. Who hasn't sat with their girlfriends and gadgets and analyzed a string of text messages from a new guy or potential date? (See also my advice on decoding postdate texts and instant messages).

I've started doing it, and I must admit, looking back on emails or text messages from a few months before is both nostalgic and sweet.

The Cover Up App Masks Unpleasant Restroom Sounds

Ahh, the challenge of racking up enough miles to actually use them for a free ticket. Business travelers and those who frequently fly via the same carrier can stock up for award travel, but did you know that many major airlines have expiration dates following a period of "non-activity" (usually between 18 and 24 months)?

If you want to still make use of those miles, you can purchase the remainder to get a free upgrade or trip in batches of 1,000 miles. However, this adds up and varies greatly between airlines. Case in point: American charges $27.50 for 1,000 miles, whereas United rings in at $67.25 for the same number. It works well if you're close to a usable amount, but if your airline rewards program is simply going nowhere, transfer your miles to a friend or family member who's saving up for a ticket. After all, you don't want to be spending more money to get a free ticket than it would cost to buy the ticket itself.

The Office, "Koi Pond": Best Lines of the Night and Video!

This week's opening of The Office isn't necessarily a huge spooky surprise since we already got a peek at those costumed spoiler photos, but I still laughed through every minute of the intro. Jim's "Bookface" costume? A-ma-zing.

I sort of wished the rest of the episode followed suit with a Halloween theme, but that's OK, because we still get a great set up with Michael, Jim, and a lobby koi pond - not to mention a ton of quips that had me cackling. Check out my list of faves, and weigh in with your own!

"Kids, just remember suicide is never the answer . . . Why is Christmas the only holiday that can have a message?"-Michael
It's bad enough that Michael Scott has the D*ck in a Box costume, but to wear it - and hang himself - in front of children?! That's even more hilariously inappropriate than usual for him. And am I totally off base, or is Ryan trying to be Edward Cullen?

Even more funny lines, plus that koi pond video, when you read more.

"I date models - face models. My girlfriend, on a scale of 1 to Gisele? A nine. Pam's carrying our surrogate, because my girlfriend needed to keep her figure for Fashion Week."
Andy and Pam are forced to make cold calls when their sales figures are low, and clients mistakenly think they're married. This is when things get really awkward, leading up to a belly kiss. We normally don't get much interaction between Andy and Pam, but I think they do well as foils.

"The custodian called again. Apparently a koi has died."-Erin
I don't know why a koi pond is so funny to me, but I was giggling at the random jokes about Michael's mishap - yes, even Phyllis's lame, "Did you flounder?" 'Bout time the employees took a few shots at their bumbling boss. Then, when he gathers them into a meeting to make his "mocking" board, the insecurity really flies. Dwight's upset over his small nose, Angela's worried that she eats like a squirrel, and Meredith says she's embarrassed because she . . . had sex with a terrorist? (Um, did I read that right?!)

"The guy was like, Who are your five friends? And I was like, I don't even know . . . . I'm a total loser. Loooooser. Too far."-Michael
I died over this one. Michael tries to save his embarrassment over the koi incident by making fun of himself, and instead, he comes across as pathetic. But "too far" was the real kicker for me.

"Jim is my enemy. But Jim is also his greatest enemy. And the enemy of my enemy is my friend. So Jim is my friend."- Dwight
When the staff watches the security tape from the koi lobby and witnesses Jim actually letting Michael fall in, their loyalty swiftly changes. Dwight so confused, his mind gets blown. I am enjoying this new glimpse into the Michael and Jim work dynamic - by the end of the episode, it seemed like they might actually get along as comanagers. On the other hand, I have to say that I miss the days when Jim was the dude with a sweet crush who liked to pull pranks. Check out the actual video of Jim leaning out of the way:

"Oh, do you mean Marlon Wayans? Cause he is."- Erin
Way to go Erin! I've always sort of viewed her as a background character, but she delivered several funny ones this week. (I'm also loving her right now thanks to her Subtle Sexuality music video.) Do you think the writers are really going to set her up with Andy? Pam seems to be pushing it in that direction - even comparing Andy to Marlon Brando - and I think it's brilliant.
