On Tuesday night in Spain, actress Scarlett Johansson debuted a new creamy brown hair colour at the premiere of The Spirit. I love the way this shade warms up her skin, but after taking a look at some of old photos, I also like the contrast between her eyes and the deep brown shade. Check out Scarlett's smooth virginal ashy-blonde hair back in 2001. It's pretty, but definitely not quite as sophisticated as the others. If you had to choose your favourite hair colour on Mrs. Johannson, what would it be?

How-To: Scarlett's Sophisticated Dolce & Gabbana Chignon

Back in December, it was announced that the design duo of Dolce & Gabbana would be coming out with a long-anticipated makeup line, with a mysterious "Hollywood starlet" to be the spokesmodel. That starlet just happened to turn out to be Scarlett Johansson. And yesterday, the young actress made an appearance at the Dolce & Gabbana Makeup event during Milan Fashion Week, undoubtedly wearing a palette of shades from the collection.
While her makeup was perfection on her flawless skin, I thought her shiny chignon, complete with black floral headband, gave her a sophisticated, youthful look. Is it me, or is her hair looking a little less brown, and a little more cherry red since the last time we saw her? Learn how to re-create Scarlett's chignon when you read more.

Separate the bang area of the front of your hair. Notice how Scarlett's stylist has taken a rather large chunk of hair from the fringe area.
Start by teasing the crown of your hair to create volume. This also gives bobby pins something more to cling onto for further hold. Lightly comb out to smooth.
Gather back of hair into a high-slung ponytail around the crown of your head. Secure with an elastic band. Roll hair in towards the elastic band, securing with several bobby pins. Use your fingers to lightly break up the roll. This will also bring your chignon to life.
Next, tease the separate bang area from the front and smooth out with a comb. Bring it back to the chignon and pin in sections, as needed. Spray with a high shine hairspray like Jonathan Product Finish Control High Shine ($22). Top off with a black floral headband to complete. I like Anthropologie's Twisted Taffy Headband ($32), Urban Outfitters' Floppy Flower Hard Headband ($18), or the Satin Headband With Bow ($4) from Forever 21.

For a while, it seemed as if Scarlett Johansson was going darker and darker (and redder and redder) with her locks. But at last night's Opening Night of LA Shorts Fest '09, she debuted this lighter-toned hairstyle with a bit more strawberry, and a little less auburn. We already know that the actress is definitely not shy when it comes to wearing bold makeup looks - or even hardly any makeup at all, for that matter. I just hope she's got some amazing conditioner. So tell me: whether it's blond, a shade of auburn, or strawberry blond, what's your top pick?

Trend Alert: Super Slick Ponytails

With wispy tendrils falling all over the place nowadays, I figured it was high time to give the bangless babes some love, too. I'd say polar opposite of the bohemian up-do would be the tightly together ponytail. Just this week alone, I spotted these three ladies wearing similarly sleek looks that focus on their face, makeup, and bone structure.
To bring this trend home, grab a high hold gel, paste, or pomade and comb your hair back so it's fairly smooth. Apply the product and then again comb it, this time fixing it up in your ponytail. Wrap and tuck part of your hair to hide the elastic, then style it wavy like Scarlett Johansson and Ashanti or stick-straight like Kim Kardashian. Lastly, I'd choose fun dangling earrings to lessen the severity of the 'do, but whether you leave your ponytail straight or curled is up to you.

When my hair is acting up, I usually opt for a ponytail and will often try out a more dramatic makeup look to compensate. Again, side-swept or off-center long bangs are great for drawing attention to your eyes and cheekbones and away from your sharp chin. Also, short wispy bangs and fringe will work well on the different types of hair thickness.

Steer clear of blunt bangs if your face is very wide by the eyes and then very narrow down below. This will only make your face look longer.

A few heartthrobs with heart-shaped faces include Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Naomi Campbell, Victoria Beckham, Brittany Murphy and Jennifer Love Hewitt. I think that those of you with a heart-shaped faces are the luckiest of the bunch, since you have such rare bone structure.

Love It or Hate It? Scarlett Goes (Somewhat) Scarlet

How-To: Teasing Your Hair

Big hair is back! And since the glossary post about hair teasing turned out to be so popular, I thought I'd create a little do-it-yourself guide so you can see just how easy it is to create some volume at your crown.

Step 1: Using a soft bristled hair brush, give your head a thorough brushing until all tangles and knots are gone.
Step 2: Next, take a metal comb or teasing brush and divide hair into two-inch sections. Set the section you are about to tease aside, and clip the rest so it stays out of the way.
Step 3: In one hand, hold the section of hair you are going to work with by the ends. Make sure the hair is straight up in the air so that you can access the area underneath. Using your free hand, take the comb and back-comb your hair in short strokes in the opposite direction from which it grows.
Step 4: Pick up the next section of hair and repeat the process until all of the desired sections of hair have been teased. When you are done, gently smooth hair over with the comb and generously spray your hair with a firm hold hairspray to ensure longer lasting volume.
