Trend Alert: The Scunchie Returns

When Carrie criticised Jack Berger in Sex and The City, season six, for giving his novel's leading lady a hair scrunchie, she was talking for all of us. What sophisticated New York woman would run around town in a scrunchie? Of course, Jack later broke up with Carrie on a post-it note, begging the question – was the scrunchie to blame?

Perhaps Mr Berger was actually ahead of his time, because this season it's all about the scrunchie. Hip young things are wearing them, 80s-style in side-ponytails, or high on the head for a retro, aerobics-instructor vibe. It's a look that's mainly come from the streets – you can't move in Brick Lane on a Sunday without seeing lycra-wearing girls with scrunchies, either in their hair, or around their wrists.

Wear a red velvet scrunchie from your local chemist (they're so cheap too, £2 at most) with natural, dewy skin and just a touch of black eyeliner. Or go for an edgy, trashy look by matching your print scrunchie – Boots do some hilarious ones – with bright, yellow nail varnish from Nails Inc,(£9.50). Add some coral makeup, like a cream blush and you're hot to trot. Becca Lip and Cheek creme, in petal, (£22), is a pale coral that looks on-trend, but still pretty.

Keep hair messy and textured, like Pat Benatar in the Love is a Battlefield video. Remember 13 Going On 30? Try the Kevin Murphy Anti-Gravity texturiser, (£11.99). Simply apply to wet hair and blow dry. For extra oomph dry your hair upside down, lifting with your fingers from the roots.

Not for the fainthearted, I admit. But for an irreverent style, it's bang on-trend. Get ready for some reactions though - fashion is a battlefield. No promises, no demands. Just a little fun...

Easy Tip: Go to Bed, Wake Up With Curls

Wake up with gorgeous curls - seriously, fast and easy! Spend the morning making a nice cup of tea and watching CNN rather than working on your hair.

Wash your hair at night.
Put your favorite styling cream in damp hair.
Flip your head over (bending at the waist) and pull all hair into a scrunchie on the top of your head.
Section by section, roll hair into curlers and pin. ( I have very long hair and I only need about 6-7 curlers).
Everything stays on the top of your head so you don't feel a thing when you are sleeping.

In the morning: magic! Remove the curlers and scrunchie; either brush hair or finger tousle and you're done! Beautiful hair! I read this somewhere and do it all the time. It is a REAL time saver with fab results!

What's Your Take on the Return of Scrunchies?

In the seemingly endless parade of my junior-high sartorial choices coming back zombie-style, the scrunchie has made its triumphant return. American Apparel is selling scrunchies in bright colors ($3.50), a move that brings back uncomfortable memories of at-home spiral perms and prepubescent awkwardness. Personally, I'm running from this trend faster than you can say "Chris, Mark, Red, Dave, Ro." But something tells me that this could take off with women too young to remember this trend the first time around. Are you going to scrunch again, for the first time, or not at all?

Did I get your attention?! Good. I am breaking my rule of "videos longer than 3 minutes only on the weekend." CasaSugar sent this down the transom, and from the moment I laid eyes on cat paws using a sewing machine to sew a scrunchy (or "chou chou"), I was sold. Throw in some dance beats? Positively hooked. I feel like dancing, and crafting and meowing all at the same time. Wheeeee!

Preen's Fabric Anemones: Love It or Hate It?

All day I dream of Preen - you know what I mean? But today, after leaving the Preen Spring show, I couldn't shake the fabric anemones the designers used. Overly used. Overall, the collection was awesome - it was more airy than their body-con collections past. Less tight, more light. The colors were spot on: gray and taupe offset by crisp white, chartreuse, and pink sherbet. Fabrics were knotted and twisted in the utmost Preen way; lace patchwork was a new spin, a black iridescent fabric was sci-fi sassy. But in an attempt to be more textural, the designers doused skirts, dresses, and shoulders in these scrunchy fabric anemones. Sometimes it was cool, sometimes it was unflattering. Admire the fresh Preen shoes for a sec, then pray tell: do you love or hate the fabric anemones?

Alice Dellal went out on the town last night partying at London's Proud galleries alongside Peaches Geldof. The model worked her typical punk style with ripped fish net tights, brothel creepers, vintage denim and a crop top. She accessorised with a studded belt and a scrunchie! Madonna is never one to shy away from extreme fashion, and tonight she sealed the deal. The singer stepped onto the red carpet in a Louis Vuitton outfit that isn't so off-kilter - until you look on top of her head. That's the biggest scrunchie I've ever seen! A large cross necklace, fingerless gloves, and thigh-high boots are all part of the unique look. What do you think - can Madonna pull it off or has she gone too far?

With all the barrettes, scrunchies, banana, and butterfly clips we could gather, my BFF and I took turns seeing who could create the craziest hairstyle as kids. Although it's rare I slow down enough to smell the Salon Selectives these days (ha), there's still something refreshing about playing at-home beauty shop.

I know I'm not the only one who spent childhood afternoons this way and, I'm not embarrassed to admit, it can still be a fun way to pass the time while watching movies with my mom or sister when I'm home for vacation. Although nowadays we focus on wild updos and other how-tos that are hard to re-create all alone, do you still like people (read: nonprofessionals) doing your hair?

What You Should Bring To The Hospital

The arrival of your new son or daughter is a time of excitement and joy. It's often a hectic time as well, so it can be difficult to remember to pack everything that you need to bring to the hospital.

About a month before the baby's due date, you should make sure you have the following items. Pack as many beforehand as you can. Use the following checklist as a guide to getting organized for the big event.

Items For Mom

Note that your hospital will supply you with a gown, slippers, disposable underwear, and basic toiletries. While it’s nice to have your own clothes with you, labor and the first few days postpartum is a notoriously messy time, and you may not want to bring out your brand-new lingerie.

Nightgown and bathrobe
Slippers
Bra and nursing bra
Breast pads
Socks (several pair)
Underwear (several pair)
Hair ties, "scrunchies"
Toiletries: toothbrush, toothpaste, hair brush, lip balm, lotion, deodorant
Comfortable and loose fitting clothing to wear home

Items For Baby

Going home outfit for baby
Receiving blanket
Warm clothing to wear home/heavy bunting or blanket (if cold weather)
Baby socks
Baby hat (especially for cold weather climates)
Baby car seat. (Call the Auto Safety Hotline at 1-888-DASH-2-DOT for more information on the safety rating of a particular model.) A car seat is required by law and should be properly installed in your car before you go to the hospital.

Items For Labor Coach

Stopwatch, or watch with a second hand for timing contractions
Phone list of contacts to announce birth to friends and family; cell phone, phone card, calling card, or change for calls
Snacks and drinks for the coach, and, if allowed by the hospital, for you
Massage rollers, massage oils to relieve back pain due to labor
The object you've chosen to use to focus your attention during labor (the "focal point")

Items For Hospital Staff

Health plan insurance card
Hospital admissions papers (you may have to be pre-admitted)
Pregnancy medical file; over-the-counter and prescription medication information
Birth preferences
Your pediatrician’s name and contact information, so the hospital can let the office know your baby has arrived

Other Important Items

Money for parking
Camera, still or video or both, film, batteries, videotapes
Books, magazines
Music (portable music player; favorite tapes, or CDs)
Inspirational items such as rocks, crystals, candles, lockets, photographs, etc.
