In Which Season Is It Easier For You to Stay Fit?

I am loving that Fall is in full force. The cooler air makes running and hiking much more pleasant, and the crispness is getting me excited for skiing and snowshoeing. I adore the change of seasons because it helps keep my fitness routine exciting. Boredom is rare because every few months, there's something new to do. Maybe you prefer one season's activities or weather over another, so tell me, in which season is it easier for you to stay fit?

Do You Work Out More in the Summer or Less?

I used to think Summer was the most relaxing season of them all, but I am beginning to change my mind. While I used to think it was easier to fit in more workouts, there is vacationing to be done, BBQs to attend, and camps to get the girls to. On top of the increased social activity (and I am really not complaining about it) interfering with my exercise time, there is the weather to contend with. Heat, humidity, thunderstorms, wild fires affecting the air quality – all these conditions seem to work against me getting physical.

What about you . . .

Source

The How-To Lounge: Dressing In-Between Seasons

While the clocks have been turned back and Spring is in the air, not every city has the weather to match the season. It is very easy to want to prematurely jump the gun on dressing for Spring but one minute the sun is out and the next it's pouring rain, so how is one to dress for that kind of weather? This kind of weather can add an extra level of stress to your morning routine so hopefully these tips will help you dress between seasons.

Don't forget your umbrella. Spring is known for rain, remember, April showers bring May flowers. If you wear rain boots to work, make sure to bring another pair of shoes to change into

While your outfit should represent the season you're in, pay attention to the weather. Don't wear open toed shoes and bare legs in the pouring rain, etc.

Even if it is cold outside, resist your favorite chunky sweater, black boots, and tights. Leave Winter wear in the past where it belongs

Spring is all about layering. I suggest investing in a trench coat which is the perfect layering piece for any occasion

If you have spring skirts or dresses that you are dying to debut, wear them with brown boots, a cardigan, or blazer for extra warmth

Cropped pants and knit dresses are a great way to segue to Spring, and choose ballet flats or peep toe shoes for your footwear to update your look

Regardless of your outfit, now is the time to introduce color to your wardrobe. Even though the sun might not be shining, try to stay away from black and other winter colors

I hope these tips will get you excited for Spring. For some transition shopping tips from Fab, click here.

If you're like me, you're probably pretty excited that the Pumpkin Spice Latte has made its return to the menu, but before you rush to place your order, take the quiz to find out how many calories your seasonal drink delivers.

Now that berry season is long gone, I'm expanding my breakfast fruit horizons. Celebrate the cold weather with pomegranate seeds in your oatmeal, or slice pears or persimmons and serve them with nut butter on toast or whole-grain waffles.

You probably know how to pick and slice a pear, but persimmons have a steeper learning curve. They're worth learning to love, so read more.

Persimmons come in two varieties: hachiya, which are orange-red and shaped like acorns, and fuyu, which sort of look like yellow-orange tomatoes. The hachiyas are bitter and astringent when they're not ripe, but when ripened, they have a soft, jelly-like texture. Fuyu persimmons are a bit firmer like a pear when ripe and can be sliced up like apples.

This fruit is an excellent source of antioxidants and chock-full of vitamins. One persimmon packs 55 percent of your daily allowance of Vitamin A and 21 percent of your recommended Vitamin C, plus six grams of fiber. In addition to having persimmon for breakfast or a snack, you can slice them up and serve them in a pretty Fall salad.

Have you tried persimmons? Tell me how you like to eat them in the comments.

In Season: Butternut Squash

Perhaps the most-loved variety of Winter squash, butternut squash is to Thanksgiving what pumpkin is to Halloween: ubiquitous. Reasonably priced and versatile, with a long shelf life, these mild, vibrantly-hued veggies are at their best during the cold days ahead. When selecting, look for squash free of bruises, feel heavy for their size, and have a matte skin. Those with wider necks and smaller bulbs will have the most flesh. Because of its rigid exterior, butternut squash has an extended shelf life, and storing it for longer - up to a month, unrefrigerated, in a cool, dark place - can bring out its sweetness. Once peeled, the vegetable will keep for up to a week if covered tightly in the fridge. Learn how to make the most of it when you keep reading.

Let's Dish: Will You Only Cook an Item if It's in Season?

Today in the New York Times dining section, The Minimalist food personality Mark Bittman shares a recipe for asparagus prosciutto rolls.

Shortly after reading his column, I came across a critique of it on The Kitchn that makes a good point: Although the dish looks delicious, asparagus is completely out of season. Instead, The Kitchn suggests, why not opt for something lighter on the conscience, such as squash or roasted beets?

I'm curious to know how you stand on this issue. While it's not in season, the vegetable in question is available in most supermarkets, where it's often been flown in from Guatemala, Peru, and other warmer locations. Importing produce from South America more than likely leaves a larger carbon footprint than eating locally. Even if it doesn't, it goes against the progressive Slow Food philosophy of eating locally, seasonally, and sustainably. Is it unethical to cook an item when it's out of season? Or is it simply unrealistic to expect us to do otherwise? Where do you stand: Will you only cook with items that are in season?

Source
