OMG BFF LOL: Two Mall Rats Talk Shopping and Wanting

Well, I guess this says something about the state of current girlhood in America, but it's not, um, pretty. OMG BFF LOL is a cartoon from artist Charlie White's exhibit The Girl Studies. It follows two girls who love shopping at the mall, and like, shopping some more.

In this episode, the two Barbie-like teens walk in and exclaim malls are like heaven - everything you could ever want on a never-ending path of tiled floors. But then the pessimist of the duo contemplates that the mall is much more like hell: everything you could want, but you can't have it all. Deep! My favorite quote? "I love to want."

At first, OMG BFF LOL just seems senseless and over the top, and then it seems like a hellish prequel to Sex and the City. Maybe the unending cycle of wanting-getting-wanting will die with malls?

Jennifer's Vogue Interview Is Very Cool

We've already seen some highlights of the December issue of Vogue where Jennifer Aniston opened up about John, Brad and calls Angelina "very uncool" (which out of context sounds so lame). Now we have even more quotes and pictures of the actress looking stunning on the beaches of her home away from home, Cabo. The article is timed to promote her movie Marley and Me and as she has done in the past, the dog-lover poses with her adorable corgi-terrier mix, Norman. The article describes a woman who loves to be in love but doesn't need a man to make the happy ending a reality. She also has a lot to say about the men in her life and getting older. Here are more highlights:

On her outlook: "You basically watch my life . . . It happens in front of you. And I can protect it and try to control things only to a certain extent. I think what I'm doing now is letting go of the reins a little bit and saying, 'It is what it is.' But there is more to me than just a tabloid girl. This whole 'Poor lonely Jen' thing, this idea that I'm so unlucky in love? I actually feel I've been unbelievably lucky in love. Just because at this stage my life doesn't have the traditional framework to it-the husband and the two kids and the house in Connecticut-it's mine. It's my experience. And if you don't like the way it looks, then stop looking at it! Because I feel good. I don't feel like I'm supposed to be any further along or somewhere that I'm not. I'm right where I'm supposed to be."
On Vince Vaughn: "I call Vince my defibrillator," she says with genuine affection. "He literally brought me back to life. My first gasp of air was a big laugh! It was great. I love him. He's a bull in a china shop. He was lovely and fun and perfect for the time we had together. And I needed that. And it sort of ran its course."
More on John Mayer: "But you know, it isn't designed. Love just shows up and you go, 'Oh, wow, this is going to be a hayride and a half.' . . . He had to put that out there that he broke up with me. And especially because it's me. It's not just some girl he's dating. I get it. We're human. But I feel seriously protective of him and us. Trust me, you'll never see that happen again from that man. And it doesn't take away from the fact that he is a wonderful guy. We care about each other. It's funny when you hit a place in a relationship and you both realize, We maybe need to do something else, but you still really, really love each other. It's painful. There was no malicious intent. I deeply, deeply care about him; we talk, we adore one another. And that's where it is."

More on Brad: "He seems…great? . . . I have nothing but absolute admiration for him, and…I'm proud of him! I think he's really done some amazing things. . . Well, it never was that bad . . . On Sex and the City: "I don't know. I don't…like…girls…whining…and complaining…about…wanting a man! I never liked Sex and the City, the kind of thing where women only feel empowered once they find the Man. It is just not up my alley. I don't believe in it. There is nothing you can control about love."
On turning 40 next year: "I'm not saying I'm 40. I'm 30-10. I don't feel 40. I don't know what it means. I just know that all of a sudden it's something that's in print next to my name. AND NOW SHE'S 40. It almost feels like some sort of badge of honor in a weird way."

Take a Stand: Starving Yourself For Manolos?

Now that many of you have seen the Sex and the City movie, you may have recognized the repetition of this line spoken by Carrie my-middle-name-should-be-Blahnik Bradshaw: "I like my money right where I can see it... hanging in my closet." This wasn't the first time Carrie used those very words, and they were brought back in the movie to perhaps drive home the "labels" half of the "two Ls" that were said to lure women to New York. There have been conflicting ideas about whether or not the movie will affect women consumers, one arguing that advertisers will get what they're wishing for and the other that they will be out of luck. Find out the details behind these arguments when you read more.

Like movie trailers that give away the premise of the plot, headlines and bylines of news stories can give away a story's conclusion. This can be said of the ABC News article called "The Sex (And The City) Economy" with the byline, "Millions Are to Be Made Off the Movie and Not Just by Those in Hollywood" and the Slate article titled, "Sex and the Cash Register" with the supporting byline, "Retailers hope to piggyback on the Sex and the City movie, but it won't work."

ABC supports its article with a quote from a retail consultant saying, "Manolo Blahnik's success skyrocketed as a result of Sex and the City. The prices keep escalating, but women will starve themselves to score a pair of his shoes." On the other hand, Slate calls upon a consumer-insights expert who says, "A few years ago, you could buy a pair of Manolos for $400, and today they're $800 or even $1,000. That price inflation hits hard at this time."

The opposing arguments continue: one suggests the lucrative presence of brands that appear in the movie like Glacéau VitaminWater, Mercedes Benz, Skyy vodka, and the service Bag, Borrow, and Steal; the other confidently insists that "the prognosis for SATC-inspired spending on the luxury goodies showcased in the movie is grim."

Interview: India Hicks on Top Design

In anticipation of Top Design's second season, I recently had the chance to participate in a conference call with the new host, celebrated fashion model and design aficionado India Hicks, as well as world-renowned designer Todd Oldham, who has a moved over to a new role as the contestants' mentor. And, I shared with you Todd's thoughts on everything from the judges to design no-no's. Now, I'm back to you with more from the interview, this time sharing the highlights of what India Hicks had to say. For those of you not familiar with India, she is daughter of famed interior decorator David Hicks and Lady Pamela Hicks, and is the author of several interior design books. Here are some of the highlights:

On the show's new look:

The main difference is going to be that we are really designing outside of the box. [In] Season One they were designing inside these white boxes, and this time we’ve taken our kids out into real places and real settings. You have real professionals designing in real places.

On designing on a budget:

My father, who was a very great designer in the '60s and '70s, had a very famous quote that he said which was, "Good taste and design are by no means dependent upon money." We see it more than ever with the group of contestants we have. I think the producers were very canny about keeping the budgets down low because that really does show who has the good eye and the good talent. If you can make something wonderful from a very small budget, you really do have talent.

On common design mistakes that people fall into:

Now there is this huge trend to have your plasma screen TV right out there in the room. Of course, I was very much brought up hiding the television. The television was an obscure, terrible object that needed to be hidden under a table or inside a cupboard. And indeed, I still live like that. We have televisions hidden in different places throughout the house. Trends change and obviously as times change, we adapt. Of course, my children have a plasma screen TV that they want out and they want to show off that they have this plasma screen TV. I find it’s the height of vulgarity. So, you know, it is a very sensitive question depending on who you’re talking to.

On whether she's ever done set decoration:

Well, I’m constantly being accused that my house is one big set decorated. But I take pride in that and I think that if you care, then you’re constantly reshaping and reformatting the way your house looks.

On the importance of your interiors these days:

I think there’s nothing nicer than having a home that is inviting and tastefully decorated. I think it’s good that we do care and I think this show is going to be very relevant because I think we are seeing a trend in the general public of people beginning to care.

I think also with the economic downturn that we’re going to be seeing, people are going to be spending much more time in their homes. They’re going to be cutting back on the restaurants, holidays and nights out, and I think we want those places to be stylish, warm, and inviting. And they’ve got to be a reflection of who we are as an individual.

I think Top Design is going to be very pertinent right now because of that economic down trend. We are going to be at home watching TV and this is a show that’s going to be showing you how to make your home that stylish, warm, and inviting place.

On Todd's role

Todd is very, very compassionate and I think it fills that role incredibly well, and these kids really relate to him. And I would go in and have to wag my horrible finger, and Todd got the nice bit of being nice and giving them a pat on the back.

On keeping a nicely interior designed house with kids:

My whole life is about kids. But having said that, I’m also very aware that they need to have their area and I need to have mine. And I think I’m blessed with living with space around me so we do have the space, that they’ve got a big playroom where they can be kids. I think even if you live in an apartment in New York, it is very important to keep that compromise. We do need to have room for ourselves to live in an adult environment with usefully styled tables and for the kids to have their space.

On what each contestant brings to the show:

What’s interesting about the contestants that we have on this show is that there’s such a wide variation and background. We have some very, very highly trained professionals which obviously brings a very different edge to the show. There’s a set designer from the Sex in the City. There’s a style editor from Martha Stewart. But we also have some very fresh, new blood on the scene. It’s interesting to see that the collaboration really stimulates the imagination in this instance and that you’ve got the 20-year-old who’s just come out of school, really fresh new look at the world, and then you’ve got the very experienced set designer who’s been on the game for some time.

On designing for your own home:

I think it really is nice to have a home that is a reflection of who we are as an individual. I find that in New York I could have a very minimalistic apartment but I live with a family on an island and so I design in the vernacular. I’m very aware of maintaining the integrity of where I live. When we build here we build in the old style of pitched roofs made of cedar shingles. But there has to be a unique and original twist to it as well. I like to also keep a sense of humor in the designing.

On working with the judges:

I hadn’t met any of them before. Margaret was known to me because my brother and sister-in-law are very much in the design world and they had said, you know, she’s going to be wonderful. Margaret is extremely authoritative with reason. She has a great deal of knowledge. Jonathan, obviously his work I knew because he was heavily influenced by my father, David Hicks, and referenced my father continuously which I respected enormously, as did Kelly. Jonathan is out there in the field, as is Kelly, and so they know and they have both worked their way up to the position they’re in now, so they know what it takes, so that they are in a position to be able to sit there and criticize may be too strong a word, but certainly give their point of view. These are real professionals judging and I think that makes a big difference.

On the guest judges:

Hold onto your seats, guys, because there are a couple of comments coming up from our guest judges that will make you sit up!

On American architecture:

I am a traditionalist, certainly. So naturally, I gravitate towards a tradition style in architecture as well. But, you know, America is a melting pot of so many different nationalities of people and design. From a European point of view or an English point of view, you know, Los Angeles is startling but that’s also what makes it quite special and unique, is the fact that you do have your Disney world of craziness going on there.

On environmental responsibility:

I am a great believer in zoning and in following the guidelines of the area that you live in. I’m very, very, very aware that, you know, island life is very precious and I live in an environment that is - you know, needs to be tended and loved. It is very important that we are very careful with our environment. I live a very responsible life. I do not live a fanatically green life, but I live a responsible life. I want my children to be brought up understanding how fragile our world is.

On the design styles of the wealthy:

Especially in England, you know, you have these wonderful estates that are done in impeccable taste. And then you have these new Russians living in London who can afford things that we couldn’t possibly begin to imagine and design in a very different way. I probably would tend towards the old, slightly dustier way of designing. I was brought up very much with the notion that it was terribly non-you to have actually bought your furniture. You were obviously meant to inherit it.

Get the Look: Carrie's Redecorated Digs

Yesterday I gave you some details from Carrie's redecorated apartment. I'm back today with a few more ideas, and I'll also help you to get the look of her place as well.

Jeremy Conway, the production designer for Sex and the City, gave me some great tips about the products He told me that he custom mixes all of his colors, but the brilliant, lovely ocean blue on Carrie's walls is very close to Benjamin Moore's Electric Blue. The Rug Company was also the source for the movie's gorgeous rugs and a pretty LOVE wall hanging in Carrie's apartment.

Additionally, a fabric panel that runs up the hall in Carrie's apartment is a Marimekko piece. Jeremy also revealed another surprising fact: The writing on the storage shelves surrounding Carrie's flatscreen TV is actually quoted from writer Gertrude Stein, who Jeremy notes is one of Carrie's favorite writers. There's also an ikatpillow on Carrie's bench seat, and a mirrored table in her living room. Her magazines are stacked on neat gray shelves, and natural-colored, deco-inspired pottery coordinates nicely.

SJP Has Family Time and Talks More Sex

Sarah Jessica Parker and a brightly dressed matching mom James Wilkie left their brownstone with dad Matthew yesterday. Unfortunately, their new puppy was nowhere in sight. It's no big secret that we can't wait to see SJP and the girls strutting the red carpet at the premiere of Sex and the City - I'm sure they're already thinking about what they'll wear - but sadly it sounds like the movie may not be all Manolos and cosmos. The newest quotes from SJP about the movie (spoiler alert!) may reveal some bad news in the script. Knowing them, we'll walk out with a smile on our faces, even if it's just for spending some more time with those old small screen friends.

With the Sex and the City movie coming out in May (!), my excitement about the return of the Fab foursome is reaching fever pitch. I was searching around for something to hold me over for a few more months, when I came across HBO's "Hello Lover" Shop. It's full of quote-emblazoned robes, hoodies, yoga pants that say "I'm gonna find my inner goddess if it kills me" and of course, martini glasses. This should do it - until May!

Did you know that Tuesday was "National Clean Out Your Computer Day"? The day devoted to deleting old emails, cleaning up your desktop and backing-up old files to make room for new ones?! Considering backing-up my data made my New Year's Resolutions list this year, maybe it's time I put my new eGo Portable Hard Drive to the test and "back-up!"

The other day Yum reminded me of this hilarious clip from Sex and the City and it brought me back to the good (or not so good) days of laptops crashing and zip drives. The best quote would have to be at the end of the scene with Carrie saying, "After all, computers crash, people die, relationships fall apart. The best we can do is breathe and reboot. And when that fails a little gizmo called a zip drive can provide a surprising amount of comfort." Ain't that the truth?!

And so, I must ask, when was the last time you backed-up?

MKW: Jimmy Fallon and John Krasinksi make me swoon, and I think Tina Fey is adorable.

GS: Who are your favorite male and female comedians?
MKW: Mitch Hedberg! "I was in a band once. People either liked us, or they hated us. Or they thought we were okay." And Ellen Degeneres. I love how goofy she is, and she can bust a move. I also never tire of "Deep Thoughts" by Jack Handy: "Dad always thought laughter was the best medicine, which I guess is why several of us died of tuberculosis."

GS: What's your favorite comedy of all time?
MKW: It would be literally impossible for me to choose just one; Dumb and Dumber, Best in Show, The Royal Tennenbaums, and Mall Rats to name a few.

GS: If your life were a comedy, what would it be?
MKW: A mix between Dumb and Dumber and The Royal Tennenbaums, if you can imagine that.

GS: Do you look like someone famous?
MKW: I get told I look like Charlotte from "Sex and the City", and Debra Messing all the time. I really don't see either, though. (How about Shania Twain?)
