Metropolitan Home Folds

Another one bites the dust. Hachette Filipacchi Media announced today that it will fold Metropolitan Home with its December issue. The company plans to focus its efforts on its other shelter glossy, Elle Decor. HFMUS President and CEO Alain Lemarchand said, "We believe the best strategy in the upscale shelter segment is to boldly focus our resources and investment on Elle Decor, which is the ad-page leader within the US market. Despite the downturn in ad pages that has affected all magazines, the Elle Decor brand has multiple opportunities for growth across all platforms.” Met's longtime Editor in Chief Donna Warner and her staff will leave the company.

This closure follows a long string of folds in the shelter world, including HFMUS's own Home, House & Garden, Blueprint, O at Home, Cottage Living, and, of course, Domino. So while it's not a shocker considering the economic climate, it is still sad news indeed. But at least this glossy went out with a bang, wowing us with the Metropolitan Home Showtime House and the exquisite Modern by Design Showhouse this year.

Former Domino Editor Launches Online Decorating Magazine

As shelter magazines fold left and right, some new blood joins the cast. Michelle Adams, former Domino market editor and founder of über-chic eco fabric and bedding shop Rubie Green - read my interview with her here - is launching Lonny magazine, an online-only decorating and lifestyle publication.

The magazine, due to launch in October, will follow a traditional magazine format on an online platform, directly connecting readers to products and resources with the click of a mouse. Good-bye earmarks! The online platform, relieved of page limits, also allows for more content in each issue.

Adams's friend and talented photographer Patrick Cline will also help lead the magazine, so I know we're in for some image eye candy! Can't wait to see the first e-ssue!

This year we said goodbye to Home, O at Home, and Cottage Living, and many of those shelter mags that aren't closing shop are still teetering. With shelter magazines folding left and right, this is a tough category, but there's still plenty of great content out there. So tell me, which is your fave?

Casa Query: What Do You Think About Shelter Magazines?

Casa's local paper, the SF Chronicle, just reported on the recent pruning of the once-flourishing shelter magazine market. With the losses of House and Garden and Blueprint, some readers are definitely in mourning (if the numerous comments on our posts were any indication). The Chronicle article points out several possible factors for the folding of the mags, including the housing crisis and the rising preference for DIY design. What I want to know is what you think of the loss of several shelter mags? Do you care? What magazines do you think are next to go? And which ones do you hope will continue to show up on the rack at your favorite bookstore?

I'm with you on the love there: Domino is always in the know about the latest trends and wows me with hip furnishings for every room in the house. This glossy really bridges the gap between fashion and interiors, and is chock full of affordable pieces and inspiring house tours. And, this year the mag wowed us with the release of its new book, Domino: The Book of Decorating.

Casa Quickie: Archive Your Magazines

I've been stockpiling shelter magazines since before I had my own apartment to decorate. But as my beloved pubs continue to fold (RIP House & Garden and Domino), I want to protect my issues more than ever.

I was delighted to learn of a magazine binding service offered by Denver Bookbinding to aid my archiving efforts. Send the company your ole Dominos and they'll bind your mag stack into as many hardcovers as you'd like. You can choose from 20 different colors of grade F buckram material, a highly durable, acid-free, library-quality canvas, and have the title, volume, year, and months printed on the spine. Foil stamping can be done in gold, silver, white, or black. One book up to 12 inches in height and two inches thick will cost $50, but the price per book decreases when you order more books. And if you want to get fancy, you can pay extra for front cover stamping, imitation leather, or decorative lines.

Open House: Magazine Hoarding

I heart magazines. I heart and star and rainbow and unicorn them. Especially shelter magazines. It's kind of a problem, a real dilemma. At this very moment, there are six mags sitting beside me untouched because I simply don't have enough time to read all that I'd like to. So, they pile up. And, the magazines in my home are another story. Even those that I have read, marked with dog-ears, etc., I can't seem to part with. I know there are over a dozen ways to repurpose your magazines, but they're too precious to me to do so. It pains me to cut them up. How about you? Do you have a problem with hoarding magazines? Do you recycle them? Repurpose them? Do you save them? Do you even read magazines at all or are you a blog fiend? Tell me by commenting below!

DIY: Cereal Box Magazine Holder

With a spare roll of decorative paper from Paper Source, and a stale box of cereal taking up space in my pantry, I attempted a little DIY project this weekend. You know how I love my shelter magazines and all of my paper projects. So I decided to make a magazine holder out of my cereal box, which would have otherwise made its way to the trash bin. I'd seen magazine holders in the past with a diagonal side that reveals the magazines, such as this one. But I just wanted to conceal my glossy collection, so I decided to leave it rectangular. My issues were also a bit wide (Dwell), so I cut off the entire back side rather than leaving an edge to keep it in place, but they stay in place perfectly fine. All you'll need for this DIY is a cereal box, scissors, decorative paper, and rubber cement.

Here are the steps:

Cut off one side of the box (i.e., where the nutrition facts are).
Then, cut off the top flaps of the box.
If you want, you can cut the box on a diagonal, so you'll be able to see your magazine collection from the side.
Lay the box down on your piece of paper, and cut the paper to size. You don't need to paper the bottom of the box.
Spread one side of the box with your rubber cement. Then press the paper onto it.
Spread the rubber cement on the next side of the box, and press the paper onto it. Continue with the third and last side.
Set your magazines in the box. Fini!

This Just In: Home Magazine Folds

Hachette Filipacchi Media U.S. has announced that it will pull the plug on its struggling shelter magazine, Home, due to "sharp declines in the 'mid-market home sector'," according to the Wall Street Journal. Home will join the ranks of fellow folded shelter titles, Conde Nast's House & Garden and Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia's Blueprint. In a company press release, Jack Kliger, President and CEO of HFM U.S, said, "The current economic environment is difficult, and the mid-market home sector has been particularly hard hit. When the middle market recovers, we will consider future publication of Home using the special interest publication newsstand model." Another one bites the dust. In this uncertain real estate market, this comes as no surprise. But, considering that House Beautiful had a 19 percent increase in ad pages in its second quarter, and Domino increased circulation by 82 percent to 1.1 million in the first half, it seems that only the fittest survive.

This Just In: Domino to Close

You'd better sit down for this. I came across some terrible news today that has sent me into shelter-mag mourning. Condé Nast has decided to fold its prize decorating magazine, Domino, just two weeks after sending in Senior Vice President Bill Wackermann to increase ad sales. The shelter category has seen the close of O at Home, Home, Cottage Living, and Wish this year alone, and last year we said goodbye to long-running title House and Garden and beloved newbie Blueprint. Seeing as we all named Domino as our favorite shelter magazine of 2008, this is a sad day for all of us. Hopefully, the magazine will live on in some format or another, but regardless, I'm stashing my issues away for safe-keeping.
