Found It! Glass and Chrome Side Table

In last night's episode of Melrose Place, Lauren was a bit broody beside a glass and chrome side table. The table was designed by Irish furniture designer and architect Eileen Gray, who pioneered the modern movement in architecture. It's called the E1027 Table, and it has a glass top and a chrome-plated steel base. Originally designed for her sister, who was a fan of breakfast in bed, it has an open base which allows you to pull the table close, and a top that can be adjusted to four different heights.

5 Places to Find a Garden Stool Under $100

Garden stools have gotten pretty popular over the last few years, and they don't seem to be losing their cool. Many, though, are absurdly overpriced. I don't want you to fall into that trap because I have also seen plenty of affordable ones. Take for instance this Round Open Work Garden Stool ($375) from Gump's. Yes, it may have an unusual mottled green glaze, but it's not any more stylish than one with a solid glaze - and its design is quite standard. You shouldn't spend any more than $100 on a garden stool, and I have even seen some for $50. I'll help you get started on your hunt.

Cool Idea: A Paint Can Stool

I just noticed this paint can stool in a home on Light Locations, and am completely smitten. Not only is this DIY furniture a great way to repurpose an old paint can (although you know you can recycle them), but it's also just downright cute. I love how this one was upholstered with vintage-looking fabric; it's like a really artsy mushroom. It's a great way to stock up on spare seating or side tables without spending much (or any) money. The top could even be upholstered with the fabric from an old t-shirt or sweater. You definitely need a gallon can to make a substantial seat. If you don't have one, ask your local paint shop or hardware store if they have any leftovers.

Found It! Samantha Jones's Stool Lamp

For obvious reason, I return again and again to the interiors from Sex and the City. Each SATC lady had her own flair and personal style, and each woman's apartment illustrated this. Right now, I'm loving confident, modern interiors, so I took a look back at Samantha Jones's digs. A lamp that doubles as stool or small side table stood out to me. Love It or Hate It? Lectus Pile of Books

Lectus Pile of Books ($811), a side table by Swedish designer Josefin Hellström-Olsson, offers storage in each of its stacked books. It's a little "out there" but I can see it making a statement in a modern home. What do you think?

Steal of the Day: Pier 1 Mirrored Two-Tier Console Table

I often forget about Pier 1 because it doesn't do e-commerce, and there isn't a store very close to me. But that's not to say the retailer doesn't have a great selection - and great bargains. This Mirrored Two-Tier Console Table ($79.98, reduced from $149.95) is completely chic and versatile, and such a great deal. It has antiqued brass legs and antique mirrors with reverse etching details. Were you to buy an original in an antique store, it could cost you $900, but why put yourself through that pain? Accent tables such as this aren't something you need to invest in; you should spend your big bucks on larger pieces like sofas, dining tables, and armoires. Got a Pier 1 near you? What are you waiting for?

Desire/Acquire: Kartell Stone Stool

Designed by Marcel Wanders, the Kartell Stone Stool ($245) has a very precious appearance thanks to its geometrical facets, which reflect light like a Cartier engagement ring. I'm a fan of the stool's hourglass shape, and the range of colors offered allows you to cue the stool to your room's palette. But, like all of Kartell's products, it is made of plastic ("durable polycarbonate"), and at $245, many of you may consider it a splurge. Luckily, there's a more affordable alternative. The Prismatic Pedestal Side Table ($74.99) from Overstock maybe be a knock-off, but it could have fooled me! It has the same hourglass shape and faceted surface for a fraction of the price.

Found It! Retro Side Table in Away We Go

The rusty blue side table beside Maya Rudolph's character in Away We Go looks like it has seen better days. But I do love its retro charm. It brings character to a little corner of a lush garden beside a comfortable bench. I'd love to have a fresher version though, perhaps in a more versatile color. Luckily, that wish is not far off. The Retro Metal Side Table ($64.95) from Sporty's Tool Shop has a similar shape with more tailored legs in white. With four legs, Crate and Barrel's Balcony Side Table ($49.95) is a more affordable buy.

Steal of the Day: Americana Cube

I love stars and stripes just as much as the next Yankee, especially around the Fourth of July. But, if I'm going to invest in patriotic furnishings to use year-round, I'd prefer to make a more subtle tribute.
The Pottery Barn Americana Cube ($499, reduced from $699) has all the right ingredients. The small trunk incorporates Old Glory imagery with muted distressed fabric stripes in dusty red and blue on its sides, and hand-stitched stars on its table surface. Nothing about it says barbecue, fireworks, or hot July day, but it certainly says "America."
