Snack Attack: Almond Berry Banana Yogurt Smoothie

Strawberries and blueberries are in season now, so stock up and use them to make this delicious yogurt smoothie. The fruit adds natural sweetness, and the Greek yogurt makes it rich and creamy. I like to add almonds to my smoothies because not only do they add fiber and protein, but they give the smoothie an interesting slightly crunchy texture.

A 16-ounce glass contains about 300 calories so it makes a tasty treat to enjoy for breakfast or a pre- or post-workout snack.
Post Run Treat: Chocolate-Espresso Smoothie

I like a smoothie. There is no denying it. I just found a recipe from Runner's World that would surely get your blood pumping. Created by a pastry chef who logs 15 miles a week, this smoothie is fortified with espresso and would be the perfect post run treat. If you run in the morning this could even replace your morning cup of joe.

To see the delicious and super easy recipe just read more.

Chocolate Espresso Smoothie
adapted from Runner's World

What you need:
6 ounces chocolate yogurt (opt for low fat if you can find it)
2 ripe, frozen large bananas*
2 shots espresso, chilled
2 cups ice (about 14 ice cubes)
1 dozen chocolate-covered espresso beans

What you do:
Place all of the ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth. Serves two.

*Any ripe banana will do. I like to cut up and freeze my over ripe bananas for smoothies. Frozen foods are not as sweet so the riper that banana the sweeter the smoothie.

Print recipe with images | without images

Try it and let me know if it makes you zippy!

You Asked: Banana Smoothie

Smoothies are such a great treat. Especially in the heat of summer. A Sugar user recently asked for a good smoothie recipe that doesn't contain berries since she is allergic.

I just found this recipe from Healthy Chef Alex. She is Mogan Spurlock's girlfriend - you might know him as the Super Size me guy and she is the "vegan girlfriend."

This recipe is tasty - everyone in my family loved it. It is definitely a healthy redo of the Peanut Butter Moo'd from Jamba Juice. Before you mock my bruised bananas, let me just say the more ripe the bananas the sweeter the smoothie. Once it is frozen fruit just doesn't taste as sweet, so put those overripe bananas to use.

Want to see the recipe? Then read more

Banana Smoothie
Adapted from Healthy Chef Alex Blog

2 frozen ripe bananas* (Peel them. Chop them. Freeze them. This way they are ready to go whenever you need them.)
2 cups non-fat milk**
2 tablespoons almond butter
1 tablespoon agave syrup
1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa powder

Combine all ingredients in a blender and mix until blended, about 2 minutes!

Notes:
*I microwave the frozen banana piece for about 20 seconds so they are easier to pureé.

**The original recipe was vegan and used chocolate soy milk (which I just never happen to have around the house), so I substituted non-fat milk and used unsweetened cocoa powder.

(Serves 2 normal people, or 1 very happy, hungry person)

Print recipe with images | without images

Homemade Smoothies Are Healthy, Easy, and Delicious

Since my brother moved to Los Angeles four years ago, he's picked up many stereotypical LA attributes. He thinks driving below 80 MPH is slow, is permanently tan, and starts every morning with a smoothie.

He used to frequent Jamba Juice, but realized a homemade variation was more healthy and cost effective. When he was home for the holidays, he taught me how to make the perfect smoothie.

The first step to making a scrumptious smoothie is to be creative. Start with your favorite frozen fruit and go from there. Although many people put ice in a smoothie, my bro avoids it.

Frozen fruit works fine at keeping the smoothie cold; it ensures a thick, creamy, not watered-down texture. He buys frozen fruit in bulk from Costco and keeps his fridge stocked with a variety of juices like acai berry, pineapple, apple, and mango. Other occasional mix-ins are soy milk, acai berry smoothie packs, protein powder, or flax. To check out two of his ultimate smoothie recipes, read more.

The Basic Classic Smoothie
From Michael Sweeney

Ingredients

6 frozen strawberries*
3/4 cup plain, low-fat yogurt (feel free to substitute a flavored yogurt for plain: strawberry and blueberry work well)
1 banana
1/2 cup orange juice
1 tablespoon of honey
protein powder or flax, optional

Directions

Place the frozen strawberries in the blender. Let sit for 10-15 minutes, so they have time to thaw.

Add the remaining ingredients and blend. Check consistency: if too watery, add more yogurt. If too thick, add more orange juice.

Pour into a glass and enjoy!

Makes 1 smoothie.

*When I made this I thought I had frozen strawberries in the freezer. However I mistook them for raspberries. Instead of running to the store for frozen strawberries, I used the raspberries.

Come Party With Me: Easter Brunch - Drinks

At any brunch, it is mandatory to have an assortment of breakfast beverages. Just-brewed coffee, a variety of teas, ice-cold milk, and fresh-squeezed orange juice are delightful selections. Keep things simple and offer only one alcoholic drink - a bloody Mary or bellini are definite crowd pleasers. Fill clear pitchers with lemon and cucumber water. For a healthy and unexpected surprise, whip up a batch of fruit smoothies. To see the recipe for these pretty pink smoothies, read more.

Fruit Smoothie
Michael Chiarello

Ingredients

1/2 cup soy milk (or other milk)
1/2 cup white grape juice
1 cup strawberries, stemmed
1/2 cup pineapple chunks
1/2 lemon, squeezed (for tartness if desired)
1/4 teaspoon Vitamin C powder (1 capsule)
Pinch salt, preferable grey salt
Small handful fresh seedless grapes

Directions
Add all ingredients to blender. Blend until smooth. If you'd like an iced smoothie, blend and then add ice to desired consistency.

Snack Attack: Banana Ice Smoothie

Here's a great snack that requires a little bit of planning ahead, but after you've done the prep, it's a cinch to make.

To make this Banana Ice Smoothie:

Peel several very ripe bananas

Break them into 1-inch pieces

Freeze the pieces in a sealed plastic bag

Just before serving, put a few pieces in the blender with a small amount of water, juice or milk

Serve immediately

You can add berries for a different flavor or top with fruit or nuts. YUM.

Why we love it:
Bananas are high in potassium. And this is a fun way to use up ripe bananas, without making yet another loaf of banana bread. Plus, how often do you get to use that blender you got from your wedding?

Healthy Eating Tip: Add Greens to Smoothies

When I recently posted my Almond Berry Banana Yogurt Smoothie recipe, FitSugar reader andrennabird had a brilliant idea - add greens to your smoothies. It's a great way to get more nutritious leafy greens into your diet, without even tasting them. The sweet fruit and creamy yogurt hide the earthy flavor, and since you blend the greens up, there's no chewing involved.

I like adding spinach, but you can also try kale, arugula, or sprouts. Just add a few cups of greens to your favorite smoothie recipe, and sip away. Experiment with combinations to see which taste the best, and if you've come up with any delicious concoctions, please share them below.

Delilicious: Fruity Smoothie

Dust off that old blender and pull out your shorts. Spring is here and fruits are ripe for the picking. Fill your tots up with vitamin rich treats that will cool them off and put a smile on their face. Extra sneaky moms can toss in flax seeds, silken tofu or wheat germ for added oomph.

To see what I use for my smoothies, read more.

Fruit Smoothies
Original Recipe

Ingredients

One cup of fresh fruit
One cup yogurt
One cup orange juice or milk
One cup ice

For a citrus flavor, use orange juice along with pineapples and strawberries.
For a more tropical taste, use milk, bananas, shreds of coconut and pineapples.
For a berry flavor and a heavy dose of antioxidants, use orange juice, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries.

Directions
Place all ingredients in the blender and pulse. If you want to add bonus value to the smoothie, throw in flax seed, silken tofu, wheat germ, or protein powder and pulse again.

Must-Read: Cooking With All Things Trader Joe's

Trader Joe's is one of those love it or hate it topics. Personally, I am in love with it. So earlier this year, when I spotted this book in a Borders window, I literally ran inside to look at it.

Cooking With All Things Trader Joe's ($24.95) is not the official cookbook of Trader Joe's grocery stores - in fact, it has no affiliation with the supermarket chain. Rather, it was written by two devotees who wanted to create a recipe collection in which all ingredients could be found at Trader Joe's. To hear more about it, read more.

Pros:

Recipes are approachable for the beginner cook.

Recipes often make creative use of ingredients.

Each recipe is given an entire spread, including a full page picture.

The authors suggest wines (from Trader Joe's, naturally) that would pair well with recipes.

Hardcover cookbook is durable, looks nice on the shelf, and would make a nice gift.

Cons:

The recipes only call for Trader Joe's ingredients, many of which are unavailable elsewhere. This cookbook would be useless for anyone without a nearby Trader Joe's.

Ingredients could be phased out at any time. (For that reason, the cookbook makes plenty of suggestions for substitutions.)

Some dishes sound short on taste - I'll pass on the Dairy-Free Creamy Cashew Smoothie.

Recipes: The recipes are methodically organized. Some of my favorites:

Appealing Appetizers: Spicy Tropical Shrimp Boats

Soups, Salads, & Light Meals: Black Bean and Ricotta-Stuffed Portabellas, Le French Lentil Soup

Main Meals: Calamari Brodetto, Saag Paneer Lasagna

On the Side: Oven-Roasted Vegetables With Rosemary

Delicious Desserts: Saffron Ice Cream

Drinks: Sangria

Begin With Breakfast: Breakfast Crepes

Bachelor Quickies (heat-and-serve meals): Elegant Rack of Lamb with Vegetables and Apple Tart

Imagery: The images, which have not been edited in any way, are lush and enticing.

Overall Rating: Because this cookbook offers impressive-sounding, attractive dishes for minimal work, this book would be great for getting a beginner into the kitchen. If you're a Trader Joe's fan, you'll love this book. If you aren't, or don't have one near you, don't bother.

Host a Name Game Healthy Potluck

Eating healthy has become my full-time job, and I'm not going to lie to you - I'm lacking in the creativity department. I mean, how many times a week can I make pasta primavera, tacos, and grilled chicken? If you're desperate for some healthy new meal ideas, why not tap into your friend's brains?

Invite your buddies over for a Name Game Healthy Potluck dinner. Everyone has to bring a healthy food or dish that begins with the first letter of their names. So Susi could bring grilled summer squash and salmon, Brian would bring tomato and basil bruschetta, and Jenny would bring juice smoothies for dessert. Make sure they know each dish needs to be made from scratch with real ingredients. It should be low fat, low in cholesterol, low in sodium, or low in sugar. Have people make copies of their healthy recipes, and not only will you leave with a tummy full of nutritious food, but you'll also have a stack of new ideas to add to you repertoire.
