Getting Noisy in the Bedroom

A recent post on About.com's Sexuality Blog considers the moans we make when we're getting it on. The post specifically recalls a study completed by Dr. Roy Levin, a sexologist, who determined that there were many reasons to make noise while in the throws of passion. According to the post, Levin's list of common motives include:

Conveying information to our partner about our arousal levels, what we like, and what we don’t.

Increasing our sexual arousal levels and/or that of our partner(s).

Enhancing the experience of pleasure (referred to as “hedonic amplification”).

Facilitating other arousal systems.

Adding to Levin's findings, the blog also mentions physical exertion as a possible and more basic explanation for noise during intercourse, likening sexy moans to the grunts of tennis players. Whatever the case may be, there's something extremely intimate about the noises of lovemaking that most people either find incredibly sexy or uncomfortable and awkward. I think it can be a bit of both depending on who it's coming from!

Pillow Talk: Listen to your Partner

As with really seeing a partner or looking at the world with them, hearing can be an extremely powerful sense to explore with your partner.

The rich sounds of your man's voice or the sweet tones of your girlfriend's laugh: something almost physical happens when your partner has that something-something in his voice. Whispering can be calming or very, very exciting. Just being close to the ear can create a kind of electricity for some people -- not to mention the breathing or the nibbling.

I like hearing the sounds that aren't words: the muttering, the humming or whistling, the mumbling. Try noticing all the different sounds your partner makes and when they show up. Notice as many kinds of tones and emotions, too, when your partner is talking about something important.

Make sure to verbalize your feelings, too. Let your partner know what pleases you and matters to you. If you're comfortable, make more of an effort to communicate your desire with little sounds, which can be very reassuring to our partners. Practice whispering more with each other, which will keep you nearer, too.

The Future Is Now: i-Beam's Bubble Barrier Comes to Life

I was cleaning up my iPhoto library the other day and came across a photo I took at E3 that features a familiar-looking contraption. The bubble on the right isolates sound so you can hear music (or in this case, games) in a noisy room. Look familiar? It's a look-alike to the i-Beam Bubble Sound Barrier that I featured a few months back, except instead of keeping sounds in like the i-Beam does, this one amplifies whatever is underneath it for better hearing.

I love it when I see concept items in the real world. It makes me realize how quickly we're moving forward in technology and innovation. I gotta be honest with you, though, there are a few more concept items on my hot list that I'd like to see made into real working products. I suppose it's only a matter of time.

I'm always on the lookout for new music, and although Pandora does a pretty good job of "getting" my tastes and introducing me to new artists, sometimes I feel like I really just need to branch out and expand my musical horizons. The New Cube Farm: I-Beam's Bubble Sound Barrier

Here at Sugar HQ, we don't have the typical cube farm that you'd find in other office buildings, but we do get a lot of noise. Not only from the traffic in downtown San Francisco, but from the various street musicians that play outside. So these Bubble Sound Barriers from design firm I-Beam - which provide not only a barrier from outside noise, but keep your music inside your own parameter - would be really, really awesome. I can only take so many hours of bagpipes and jazz flutes in the afternoon.

Of course, the Bubble Sound Barrier may not be completely practical - they hang from the ceiling or attach to a wall with a movable arm - but they are totally retro-chic, and seem like they are straight from a designer in the late '50s trying to predict what offices would look like in the future. The only things missing are the robots.

Sound Waveform Bracelet: Love It or Leave It?

Technically, the Sound Waveform Bracelet by the Sound Advice Project (also part of artist David Bizer's thesis) is intended for use by parents imparting advice to their teens about drug use. But the bracelet has such a cool concept - you record any message on the website, and the soundwaves from the words become the bead design on the bracelet - that it could be awesome for anyone.

Friendship bracelets that "say" how much they mean to you or bracelets for significant others that say a sweet love message - it would be a totally geeky way to impart some feeling to a piece of jewelry. And at just $18, you can afford to be free with your affections.

But should the design be reserved for teens, as it's intended? What do you think?

Product of the Day: The Sound Princess Bathroom "Noise" Blocker

I'm not big on fart humor, but when a product like this comes along, I gotta share it with you guys. The Sound Princess is installed in public restrooms in Japan to allow dainty women to mask unpleasant sounds that may result from, uh, doing what comes naturally. Press a button and you hear--the sound of a flushing toilet.

The inventor realized that women were "double flushing" (am I really writing about this?) to mask the sounds and that her product was helping to save water--13 liters for every withheld flush. Could a product to mask unpleasant smells be far behind? That sure would have helped this lady and an entire airline flight. (Thanks again, Queen of Noise. Where do you find this stuff?!)

Uber Chic Bose Stereo: Please Let It Be Real!

Sometimes I get a slightly panicked and rushed "oh-my-gosh" feeling in my stomach when I find something I really love, and aren't sure where (or how) to get my gadget loving paws on it. You know the feeling, right? I got that exact feeling when I came across this Bose Stereo on Leah Fabish's Coroflot Portfolio, and I'm hoping against all hope that this sweet specimen is real, and someone out there will send it to me asap!

I looove the color, the speaker design, and the fact that I can hook up my USB drive to it when I am out of range of my iPod. When that would be I'm not sure, but hey, at least it's an option! Sadly, there isn't much detail that I can give you about this hot chocolate yummy yum sound system, but let's just say I'm praying that Santa will come early this year. I should be on the good side of his list anyhow. Are you as in love with this as I am? Check out another view when you read more.
