Do You Spray Tan All Year Round?

I'm a big fan on the spray tan, no matter the season. It's safer on your skin than the sun and it's a great way to look instantly savage before going on holiday. Apparently Victoria Beckham is also a fan of the year-round fake bake. According to the Daily News, she's hired a personal spray-on tan artist to help her tan appear more natural.

Jimmy Coco (aka Mr. Spray Tan) said, "When we met, she had the worst fake tan ever."

Now, however, she's orange no more thanks to her bi-monthly visits to Jimmy where he turns her the perfect shade of brown with a spray gun whilst she wears only white paper thong! Do you spray tan throughout the year? If so, do you go to a booth or do you have a specially appointed person that you trust to do the job?

Are Spray Tans Safe?

Baking in the sun or on a tanning bed is bad news for your skin. Exposure to UV rays leads to wrinkles and more health-threatening conditions such as skin cancer. A UV-free alternative to give your skin that kissed by the sun glow is a spray tan. You stand in a booth as your skin is coated with a mist of sunless tanning solution. The active ingredient in most sunless tanning products is dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a chemical derived from glycerin. When applied to your body, the DHA reacts with the amino acids in the dead skin cells on the outer layers of your skin, temporarily producing a brown color that gradually fades within a week.

These products are generally considered safe alternatives to baking in the sun, and the FDA regards DHA as safe for your skin. That's because DHA isn't absorbed by your skin, and it has no known toxicity. You just need to make sure that DHA doesn't get on your lips, in your eyes or nose, or that it's not inhaled. Remember that a spray tan will darken your skin, but it in no way protects it when you're outdoors. So before heading out, be sure to apply sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

With Spring here and the weather getting slightly warmer, it's only natural to shed your layers and bear more skin. However, I wouldn't say that it's been hot enough to sun bathe and turn the pasty pale UK "glow" that we all have into anything savage.

This means that you can either go out au natural, or get a little help from self tanning gels, creams, at-home mists (such as Lindsay Lohan's newest Sevin Nyne product) or, visit your nearest spray tan booth.

Whilst, faux tans are easy to spot if not properly blended and low-quality salons can leave you looking more orange than browned, it's definitely a beauty risk that not everyone is willing to take. So cast your vote below and let me know if you spray tan!

Beauty Blooper: See Spot Dance

Hey everyone! I just want to remind you to keep sending in your beauty bloopers. Help me help your fellow beauty addicts learn from your mistakes and mishaps! Today's blooper involves one anonymous reader's spray tan slip-up.

"I decided to try spray tanning a couple of months ago for a wedding I was attending in the Bahamas. As a first-timer, I diligently watched the video, applied the barrier cream in all the right places and held my breath for 30 seconds like I was instructed. When it was over, I began to towel off until I noticed drippings falling from the shower cap onto my face. I frantically blended them for fear of splotches, and at the same time, I was intermittently wiping off my hands so they wouldn't stain and give away my secret.

"Because I was so concerned with my face, I completely skipped out on rubbing in the self tanner on the backs of my arms, shoulders and back. Four hours later I took a shower and didn't notice a thing.

"In the morning, I hopped on a plane to the wedding where I was excited to show off my new tan. However, just as I was getting jiggy on the dance floor, a bridesmaid came over and gently pointed out that my back was covered in little orange spots. I was so totally mortified that I spent the remainder of my time at the wedding in the bathroom trying to fade the tan spots with lemon juice."

Lesson learned: Be patient and meticulous if you are going to get a spray tan, since there is nothing worse than an obvious, cheetah-print faux glow!

Group Therapy: Oops... Tanning blunders.

Hi ladies,

So I tried self-tanning via a spray tan for the first time and I'm terrible at it. I'm all sorts of different shades and no matter how many times I tried to even it out, it's just not working! So I've decided that I should just embrace my pale skin. However, a fairly big event requiring a dress is coming up in a week and I look awful! How long does it generally take for a spray tan to fade? Is there something I can do it speed it up?

Also, is it bad if I am exposed to the sun while I'm still rockin' the (very bad) spray tan? Thanks!

Buzz-Worthy Video: New Jersey Real Housewives on Mercy!

Medical drama Mercy isn't on the top of my TiVo lineup, but the show did well enough to score a full season, and it landed squarely on my radar when it was announced that the ladies of The Real Housewives of New Jersey (a highly guilty pleasure of mine) were going to guest on an episode.

So without further ado, here's a clip from tonight's episode, "Not That Kind of Girl." Theresa and Jacqueline play the meddling BFFs to a woman who's confronting Chloe about sleeping with her husband. The Jersey stereotypes that made the reality show a hit are here in full force - there's plenty of name-calling, spray tan references, and a little fun made of the housewives' non-working lives. It's pretty entertaining, even if you've seen neither show.

Beauty Byte: Lindsay Sued Over Tanning Spray

Unfortunately, sometimes part of being a celebrity is dealing with lawsuits, whether something goes awry with a beauty contract, as in the case of Uma Thurman and Lancôme, or questions arise over secret ingredients in the formulation, as in the case of Kate Hudson, who helped develop David Babaii for Wildaid. Now, it looks like Lindsay Lohan is the next star facing some legal issues of her own.

In a lawsuit filed in Tampa, chemist Jennifer Sunday claims that Lindsay and her business partner, Lorit Simon, stole the formula for Sevin Nyne, a Lohan-endorsed tanning spray which launched back in April. According to the suit, Simon and Sunday had been hammering out details of the tanning spray, but weren't able to agree on pricing.

"The next thing we know, Lorit Simon and Lindsay Lohan are partnering and Ms. Lohan is taking credit for developing this formula, which she indeed had no role in," Sunday's attorney, Marcia Cohen, told the St. Petersburg Times. Whether it's all a big misunderstanding or there is truth behind these allegations, one thing's for sure: there's never a dull moment when Lindsay's involved.
