Top Ten fashion trends for Spring 2009

Spring is here at last with some exciting trends-a lot of which we’ll all be able to pull off, no matter what our body type. I think the look in general will be soft and extra-feminine. Check out some of the most interesting trends:

Spring is all about colors, so make sure you wear plenty of it. Vivid colors like hot pink and electric blue will be really big.
In vogue this season is the little white dress for its glamour quotient.

Feminine floral prints are also going to make a comeback this spring and butterfly motifs and prints will also be quite popular.

Accessories are going to be really big this season. Opt for long oversized necklaces, big bangles and bold jewelry, stylish handbags.

Jewel encrusted clothing are also going to make a come back and will not be restricted to evening wear. In 2009 they return brighter, bolder, and more elegant. This time pieces are not just embellished but often completely encrusted by jewels; the feeling is luxurious, exotic, and yet the glamour remains somewhat understated.

In Spring fashion tends to get a little more revealing; the combination of sheer and opaque fabric will work wonders. 2009’s sheer pieces are a mixture of the soft and feminine.

Flairs, ruffles and bows are also smart options for spring. Look for bows at the shoulders and hips and ruffles at hemlines.

High waisted skirts and pants will make a style statement this season, so make sure you own them.

Single shouldered dresses and tops as well as asymmetric shoulder-lines have made a huge return in 2009. Its versatility and endless possibilities to wear it makes it one of the hottest trends.

Bohemian look will make a powerful statement this season. The best way to pull this off this Spring is to pair a bohemian styled piece with something a bit more conservative like a beige skirt or vest.

Hervé Léger Keeps It Simple For Spring

At Hervé Legér, makeup artist Val Garland described the look she created as "a little bit punk but in a Hervé Legér way." The design team and Garland's MAC team stumbled upon their perfect Spring 2009 look by accident, which is kind of punky in itself. "We did two looks [to show the Hervé Legér designers]. One was a really greasy smoky eye. Val was wiping it off and it left a ring, and they were like 'Stop right there! that's what we want!'" explained Senior Makeup Artist Ashley Dorsey. Aside from eyeliner, the look consisted only of MAC Select MoistureCover applied with an eyeliner brush, feathery mascara, and strobe cream on models' limbs.

With skin, Garland adopted a less-is-more philosophy. Since it's early in Fashion Week and models' are still relatively rested and breakout-free, this was an easy feat. "Keep it real, keep it bare. Moisturizer, concealer if needed, maybe some highlighters," she said. "In this collection, there's a lot of skin."

The eyes took center stage. "I want it to be tight and very black, so it's a question of using an eyeliner, going over it with a waxy pencil, and then, so that it won't move, setting it with a black powder. So it's sooty, sooty, black, black, black, and it won't smudge. It's like makeup for the beach!" You know, if you wear $2000 dresses to the beach...

Best of 2008: Fabulous Fashion Week Shows

2008 spawned a tremendous flurry of fabulous Fashion Week shows. Let's see, there were New York Fall and Spring shows, Milan Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week, London Fashion Week, and LA Fashion Week. Oh, and don't forget all of the ravishing Resort and Pre-Fall collections. Some of my faves were Proenza Schouler's Fall line, Alexander Wang's Spring offerings, and Balmain's Spring collection in Paris. All different, all divine. Which were your favorites? New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Preen

New York fashion week is well under way for Spring 2009 at Bryant Park. Yesterday, British design duo Preen took to the catwalk (although Justin Thornton attended alone whilst his partner is heavily pregnant) to present their latest collection.

Preen have really been a name to watch for recent seasons and they're sure to become a household name very soon. This collection did not disappoint. They continued with the body-con silhouette of previous seasons but added a twist with tulip shape skirts and exposed detailing. Both zips and corsetry were on display creating an almost skeletal style.

The colour palette was mainly muted with a few bright red pieces. Preen played with shape creating volume using pleats, layers and folds whilst still remaining very feminine. Delicate detailing such as punched leather and ruffles added to the playful femininity. Cut out detailing does not simply exaggerate the delicate feeling of the pieces but along with the short hemlines also highlights the sex appeal of the dresses.

London Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Ashish

There was a distinct American vibe to the opening of this collection shown on the last day of Spring 2009 London Fashion Week. It began with a military feel with camouflage pieces that were made glamorous with a lot of sequins.

Certain glossy magazines this month have declared the end of grunge, but with collections like this it seems fashion's love affair with grungey dressing is never quite over. However, for Spring Ashish has merged the grunge trend with the current penchant for texture creating it with badges, sequins and patches.

There was a gambling theme with dice and playing card imagery throughout teamed with '90s stone washed denim. Sequined flapper-style dresses hung beautifully with opened backs and long scarf-like batwings trailing behind.

It was an experimental yet wearable line, with dresses that were designed for the red carpet. These dresses were styled with khaki parka jackets for a dressed-down Brit pop look. For me, the collection was one of the highlights of the week. What do you think?

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Michael Kors

It's quite grey here in London today so imagine how much Michael Kors has managed to brighten up my day with his Spring 2009 collection. The fun, playful line from Michael Kors was shown yesterday morning as part of New York Fashion Week.

There were plenty of polka dots, stripes and even a bit of tartan in the line which used a bright colour palette of tomato red, canary yellow and cobalt blue. He took inspiration of '50s pin-up girls with high waist lines and wide brim hats. There was also a '90s vibe with midrifts revealed and Pretty Woman style power dresses.

Waists were clinched with solid colour belts and sleeves were cropped.

All these bright colours leave me mourning the end of summer and counting down the days til next Spring!

New York Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Matthew Williamson

British designer Matthew Williamson took his Spring 2009 collection to New York Fashion Week yesterday presenting a line of beautifully structured dresses. Incorporating plenty of colour and spangle, the designer also used the opportunity to launch his accessories line.

Bright floral prints were trimmed with gold to create a boho party style that is sure to go down nicely in Ibiza next summer. His Pucci experience did not go unnoticed with references to the classic Italian style. Tribal detailing gave the floaty dresses more definition and edge.

Waists were clinched in with oversized or skinny belts. Trouser suits were bright yet tailored with 7/8th trousers and broad shouldered jackets. Williamson used brocade prints but updated with shots of metallic or neon pink. He also experimented with patent leather but softened it with soft, floral jackets and blouses.

With the return of Boho/Bopo, expect to see a lot more of Williamson and designs inspired by his work for next Spring.

Runway Hair Gone Wild

It wouldn't be the runway without some dramatically wild looks. After all, fashion shows are meant to showcase avant-garde style. All this week, models have been strutting their stuff during Spring 2009 Fashion Week in Paris, and I've put together a collection of some of the most extreme hairstyles thus far. While most of these looks aren't for everyday wear, they're sure fun to see - or not see, in the case of Maison Martin Margiela.

London Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Vivienne Westwood

It is pleasing to note that Vivienne Westwood's Red Label show now seems to be a permanent fixture of London Fashion Week. After her Berlin clubland-inspired Anglomania collection at Berlin Fashion Week this summer, Westwood's Red Label girl has taken on a more sophisticated approach for Spring/Summer 2009. With a front row that included Kate Moss, Dita von Teese, Daisy Lowe and rather bizarrely, Pamela Anderson, this was one of the most hotly anticipated shows of the week.

Hooded silk jumpsuits and dresses in the palest taupe were given a street-style edge with square sunglasses and punky top knot hair. Westwood's signature tartan got the pared-down treatment with white and blue Prince of Wales check dresses and fitted jackets. A core of tailored separates gave the collection grounding, whilst a combination of masculine severity in the cuts and classic feminine 'frou' shapes looked fresh and modern. Ethnic influences took the Red Label girl to a more exotic place. Cue large, gold tribal earrings and traditional African prints.

There was still that typical Westwood humour of course. A faux-Burberry check visor was paired with a high-waist pencil skirt and 90's hoodies were worn with rolled-up white sweatsuit pants and straightened hair. It is testament to Westwood's talent that these often incongrouous elements sat comfortably together and while the overall look was certainly eclectic it never felt merely random.

The show closed with typical rock and roll aplomb. The late 80's and early 90's club scene was celebrated with molten metallic dresses in shinning steel grey, bronze and bright, yellow gold. An orange-gold sequin dress looked like schmaltzy Christmas wrap, whilst a dark oil-slick dress screamed tough love. Even the more modest muted print dresses got the Amy Winehouse touch with jagged-edge hems and necklines pulled off the shoulder to reveal everyday white bras.

London Fashion Week, Spring 2009: Ossie Clark

The revival of '70s designer Ossie Clark went in to it's second season yesterday under the careful guidance of Avsh Alum Gur who presented the collection at London Fashion Week. For Spring 2009 the line used a wide palette of bright colours alongside muted tones.

Hand painted florals appeared in bright colours contrasting against neutral fabrics next to long gowns. Sheer fabrics appeared as blouses, skirts and even trousers.

Necklines were high even with wrap dresses which were tied at the waist. The collection felt very laid back and it shows how well Avsh Alum Gur understands the Ossie Clark mindset. With items from the Autumn collection already on fashion editors wish lists this is one revival which is working well. What do you think about the collection?
