I'd like to say that I do most of my work sitting upright at my desk, but in reality, that's not always the case. You're more likely to find me curled up on the couch working on my computer, or propped up watching a movie in bed. I've also created makeshift work spaces in airports while waiting for flights, my kitchen floor, and even on the city bus. Of course, with all of this mobility comes poor posture, and more often than not, a hot lap.

The Lightweight Laptop Stand ($26) is perfect for use anywhere, and since it is so light, it's simple to toss in your bag and take anywhere. My favorite is the bright orange, but it also comes in fun pink and more serious gray or black.

One Night Stand Kit - Hilarious or Horrifying?

When I first saw the pink beaded strands in this One Night Stand Kit ($19), I thought they were hair rubber bands, which actually could come in handy during an unexpected hookup. But no, they are "love beads," packaged alongside a tiny vibrator, a vibrator ring, Please Gel samples, and two condoms - everything you'd need for a one-night stand. (This is basically the Walk of Shame Kit but without the cancer awareness bracelet!) Assuming you don't live in Alabama, would you buy something like this? Do you think it's funny, useful, or offensive?

The Dave Scale: Cheap, Not So Cheap, Exorbitant

What recession? Remember last week, when I pinpointed Target's pricier version of my beloved Dave laptop stand from Ikea?

Yeah. I can't exactly call Target's stand expensive, now that I've found the ridiculously expensive Nestable by Jasper Morrison for furniture giant Vitra - it retails for a whopping $845.

Wipe the sleep out of your eyes; that's eight hundred and forty-five bones.

The material list is polyurethane, powder-coated steel, and die-cast aluminum; there doesn't appear to be gold or diamonds in there, so why the high, high price? It's not bad-lookin', but wowee, that's the first simple laptop stand I've seen that comes close to laptop price.

DIY: Grass Skirt TV Stand

I first saw Hawaiian grass skirts used to conceal clutter in one of my favorite decorating books, Pad. A few years ago, frustrated with the lack of stylish TV stands available, I decided to create my own grass-skirted version with a shelf I bought at Ikea. (Please forgive the poor quality of the photo; I've since upgraded to a new stand and couldn't take another one.)

By attaching the grass skirt to swiveling curtain rods that open and close like cabinets, you have a fun and funky way to conceal your DVD player and DVDs underneath. What You'll Need

An unfinished wooden shelf large enough to hold your TV. (I used one from Ikea's Ivar system.)
Paint or stain in the color of your choice, plus a medium-sized paintbrush.
A pair of swing arm curtain rods in the finish of your choice. These come with hinges; all you have to do is screw them in.
A screwdriver
A grass skirt
String or twine
A hammer and nail or a drill

How to Make It

Before you start the skirt portion of the project, paint the shelf and allow it time to dry.
Next, measure the width of the front of your TV stand, and adjust the telescoping curtain rods so that when they meet in the middle, they will fully cover the front of the shelf. To adjust the rod, you simply loosen the screw, pull out the telescoping rod to the desired length, and tighten the screw in the right spot.
Lay the curtain rods on the floor, and line up the waist of the grass skirt beneath the rods. Cut two lengths of skirt so that one fits on each rod.
Using one long piece of twine, secure the skirt pieces to the rod by "lacing" it. Thread the string between the spaces in the grass, wrap the string around the rod, and repeat for the length of the rod.
Once each piece of skirt is secured to the curtain rod, you're ready to install the poles to the shelf. The rods will come with hardware, so you can easily affix it using the accompanying screws. Hold the rod where you want to attach it, and mark the location of the holes with a pencil.
Get each hole started with a fine drill bit or simply by hammering a nail partway into the wood. Then, hold the curtain rod brackets flush against the wood and tighten the screws through each hole and into the wood.
Ta-da! Your TV stand is now skirted, swiveling, and ready to go.

Remember all that noise I talked about desperately wanting to mount my flat screen to my wall? Well, I might have to take that back - IF I can have the Prism 50 Media Stand, yet another fabulous and inspirational piece from my design guru, Karim Rashid.
