Steve Jobs Health Update

On the same day the iPhone 3G S debuted in Apple and AT&T stores across the country, the The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple's CEO Steve Jobs received a liver transplant two months ago in a Tennessee hospital. They also noted that he is recovering well and plans to be back at work later this month, as planned, on a part-time basis.

Now keep in mind that the WSJ isn't revealing its sources for this news, so nothing has been officially confirmed. But it was announced in early January that he was considering a transplant after complications from his treatment for pancreatic cancer, so this news isn't completely far-fetched.

In my mind, no news is good news, so without an official announcement from Mr. Apple himself, I think it's safe to say we'll be seeing him back in action in a couple of weeks. And liver transplant or not, we sure hope his downtime has put him back on track with his health . . . we sure did miss seeing him at the WWDC this year.

Steve Jobs Is Currently Working From Home

In January we learned that Apple's CEO, Steve Jobs, would be taking a leave of absence for five months to focus on his health. Although Apple has continued to release new products with Apple's chief operating officer Timothy Cook at the helm, I still can't help but wonder how Steve is doing and what he's been up to.

With only two months left in Steve's medical leave, Apple insiders have revealed that although Tim Cook takes care of day to day duties at Apple's headquarters, Steve is still very much a part of company strategies and products from home. They also noted that Jobs stays busy reviewing products and was very involved in the development of the iPhone's latest OS user interface. And the best news? Apple is currently working on a new device that's about the size of a Kindle.

Steve Jobs Takes a Leave of Absence Due to Health Issues

Steve Jobs, who announced last Monday that he would not be delivering the keynote at Macworld, has just announced that he will be taking a medical leave of absence from Apple for a period of five months to focus on his health.

Jobs revealed in an email to employees today that his health issues are more complex than he originally thought (he previously said he was suffering from a hormonal imbalance). In the meantime, Apple's chief operating officer, Tim Cook, will take over Jobs' day-to-day duties while he is on leave, although Jobs still plans to maintain his CEO role by being a part of major strategic decisions.

A sad Apple news day indeed. We hope that Steve takes this time to focus on his health so that he can come back, full-steam ahead, this Summer.

It was a busy day in SF yesterday with all eyes on the "It's Only Rock and Roll" event. Not only did Steve Jobs made his triumphant, black turtlenecked return to the keynote stage after taking time off for his health, but iTunes 9 was introduced, and then there were the iPods. Oh, the video and FM tuner enabled iPods. Plus, who could forget the monster capacity bump to 160GB on the iPod Classic and new candy-colored iPod Shuffles? My head is spinning.

Personally, I'm pretty excited about the iPod Nano's video function (which shoots at VGA quality 640x480), as well as the integrated Nike + pedometer. I mean, hello - a geek's gotta stay in shape! Now share your favorites - which Apple announcement are you most excited about?

Steve Jobs, a New Nano, and Cheaper, More Colorful Shuffles!

Where do I begin?! This morning at Apple's "It's Only Rock and Roll" Event here in San Francisco, it was all about the music (a new and improved iTunes) and the iPod (new shuffles, a better iPod Classic, and a new Nano with a builtin video camera to compete with the Flip). Sites like Gizmodo and Engadget were there to catch all of the live coverage, so here's a quick recap . . . And yes, Steve Jobs opened the keynote to receive a standing ovation from the audience.

The new iPod Nano is here! Boasting a camera that will capture video (with sound) and still images, the new Nano will replace that clunky video cam you used to lug around. Available today in a variety of bright colors, the fifth generation Nano will cost $149 for the 8GB and $179 for the 16GB.

The iPod classic is still going strong. Apple has just bumped its capacity to 160GB for the same price as the previous 120GB version, $249. That's a whole lotta tunes.

The teeny iPod shuffle is now available in fun colors like green, blue, or pink, with the original black and silver devices still available as well. They will be priced at $59 for the 2GB model, and $79 for the 4GB model.
