Whenever I'm up in the mountains at my vacation house - as I am now - my mother and I spend every afternoon lying by the pool, indulging in a cocktail (or 2) at happy hour. Usually I order piña coladas, but since this week was the 4th, I've been ordering strawberry daiquiris instead. With such a beautiful vibrant red color, and the sweet/sour taste combination of pureed strawberries and fresh squeezed lime juice, how could one not look exceptionally chic sipping this by the pool?

I'm a fan of just about every type of cocktail, be it a tiki drink, modern classic, or wine-based concoction. However, I'm not too crazy for frozen cocktails like blended margaritas and strawberry daiquiris.
Sure, I enjoy the occasional piña colada poolside, but when it comes to frozen drinks, I normally stay away.

Next month, some of my friends are making the trek out to Sacramento from the Bay Area to hit up the California State Fair, where a number artists — including one of my favorite country music stars — is performing. But the state fair doesn't have to put on an elaborate musical production to get me to show up; I'd be there for the food alone! After all, who can say no to mile-high strawberry daiquiris, elephant ears, garlic fries, and those giant smoked turkey legs?

On a recent weekend, I had the opportunity to attend Sunset's Celebration Weekend, an outdoor event dedicated to all things lifestyle, from gardening to home improvement to, of course, food. The festival, which took place under a shining sun at Sunset magazine's headquarters in Menlo Park, CA, featured cooking demos from chefs like Cindy Pawclyn, Jamie Lauren, and Aaron McCargo, Jr.; composting seminars from Sunset editors; wine tastings; and vendors selling fresh greens, molés, and gelato. There was tons of food and drink to sample: I spotted everything from grilled sausages to watermelon beer to the tallest strawberry daiquiris known to man.

Regardless of whether or not we're in the midst of a food revolution, it's undeniable that over the last couple of years, cuisine highlighting fresh-picked produce has gained major ground. In fact, the principles of seasonality and slow food aren't just being applied to food. They're also key in what The New York Times calls the "farm-to-glass movement," where drinks are driven by produce at the peak of the season.
