In the past couple of years, celebrity stylists like Rachel Zoe have really been thrust into the limelight. But the position has been around since the '30s, and the job description typically covers much more than making sure an actress looks Fab on the red carpet.

Stylist: The Interpreters of Fashion, $48, by Sarah Mower, examines the role of stylists in fashion - from overseeing a magazine's photo shoot to organizing a designer's runway show.

It spotlights 16 stylists, including Vogue Paris editor Carine Roitfeld and Vogue creative director Grace Coddington, but omits celebrity stylists like Zoe and L'Wren Scott, who works with Nicole Kidman. Each featured stylist has their own chapter, filled with their iconic work as well as personal looks at their own lives and tastes.

This is definitely a book I will be curling up with!

Since top stylists book up quickly, be prepared make an appointment months out
When you call to book an appointment, ask to be placed on the cancellation list and make yourself available
Don't book a top stylist for a simple trim. Chances are his or her prices are high so make your appointment worth your while and make your appointment when you are ready for a new look
If you are a first time client, getting an appointment with the top stylist might be difficult. Try booking an appointment with his or her assistant or another stylist in the salon so they can get to know you and recognize your face
It can't hurt to introduce yourself to the stylist you wish to see in the future. Let he or she know you are on their cancellation list and look forward to the opportunity to work together soon
Once you get in, make yourself memorable. Spark up good conversation and try to make a personal connection
Before you leave the salon, book your next appointment, and don't forget to tip well

While seeing a top hair stylist isn't important for everyone, it's always fun to see what the hype is all about, even if it's just for one cut or color!

Interior Stylist: Twig Hutchinson

With a name as unusual and inspiring as Twig, it's no surprise that London-based interior stylist Twig Hutchinson creates gorgeous, delightfully unusual interiors for her clients. Her work with British Marie Claire, Lancome, Homes & Gardens, and Laura Ashley, among many others, has breathed inspired life into these companies and publications.

I admire Twig's use of saturated colors and unexpected vignettes, such as a collection of tarnished Moroccan teapots, whose dusty metal contrasts brightly with blue seltzer bottles and a broad-leaved houseplant. I also love her layering: in a photo of a romantic bedroom, a tapestry wallpaper in an over-the-top pattern competes with a tapestry bedspread. There's something about her work that reminds me of Alice in Wonderland - a sense of possibility mixed with Technicolor marvels. Check out the gallery for more of her beautiful work.

New Product Alert: MAC Stylistics Collection

Whereas MAC's holiday collection is all about metallics and gilded excess, the new Stylistics collection fast-forwards the look to the present. Featuring the stunning Alek Wek as its model, the limited-edition line is a little jazzy, a little elegant, and very cool.

The first thing you'll notice is the chic packaging, which features black and white pearls in squared-off packaging. It's a big departure from MAC's normal containers, but I like it - it feels special and glamorous without being too Joan Collins, you know? The collection includes four lipsticks ($22), four Lipglasses ($20), Sheerspark pressed powder ($22), Sheer Mystery powder ($45), special-edition brushes ($22–$42), an evening clutch ($60), and the Air of Style scent ($60), which is a baroque floral.

The Stylistics collection is available at MAC boutiques and online as of today. Shipping of online purchases is estimated to begin next Tuesday, so keep that in mind. If you're impatient, it might be quicker to call the MAC boutique closest to you to see if it's in stock!
