What's Your Coffee Table Style?

At my house, I often pile coffee table books, magazines, and decorative objects on my coffee table. Of course, I try to keep it tidy through the use of trays, but sometimes the number of things on my coffee table gets a little overwhelming. While I admire the minimalist look, it's just not my style. What's yours?

When done properly, a table runner and tablecloth can both be used to create a harmonious and gorgeous table setting. Think of it like you would clothing: if one is patterned and textured, the other should be simple and plain. Here, a rich brown-velvet runner is placed on top of an elegant white cloth. Golden beaded chargers serve as accents and white serving ware - plates and bowls - let the food be the focal point. Fill glass bottles with the orange wine and fresh water. Candles and flowers are essential to achieve a festive and celebratory mood.

Six Simple Thanksgiving Arts and Crafts Projects

Thanksgiving is a busy day in every household and coming up with ways to entertain the children can require more energy than a cooking mama or papa has on reserve. Planning a simple arts and crafts project and setting up a table for scribbling, decorating and family bonding time will keep the tots occupied while the grown-ups cook, watch football, sip a glass of vino and prepare the big meal. Check out some of our favorite projects for a little artistic inspiration. They all require a bit of material prep, but minimal effort from adults. You'll be thankful, I promise.

Kidoodles: Thanksgiving Turkeys For the Table

It's time to rally the troops for a day of arts and crafts that can be showcased at the holiday table. A win-win, this simple project will have everyone feeling useful, creates decor for the evening, and leaves little mess in its wake.
Supplies needed:

Small pumpkins
Peel and stick foam paper
Small marshmallows and a black pen (substitute googly eyes if you have some)
Scissors

Simple Steps:

Cut out pieces for the turkey's body including the wattle, beak, and feathers
Peel the sticker side off of the feather backs and arrange them in a fan-like design. Once you are pleased with the shape, stick it to the back of the pumpkin.
Peel the wattle and stick it onto the turkey's face. Do the same for the beak.
Tear the marshmallow in half and place the two sticky sides to the face and dot them with the black marker for the eyes.
Peel the back of the turkey and stick the body to the front of the pumpkin. Your bird is now complete.

Allow the youngsters to peel and place the feathers and draw on the feathered friends where they see fit!

A coffee table in some ways is a window to your soul. On my coffee table you'll find a plentiful stock of shelter magazines; DIY, design, and art books; expensive candles (a guilty pleasure); matches; coasters (for my wine habit); a silver dish to catch odds and ends; the workings of my latest craft project; and a deck of I ♥ NY cards. My mother's coffee table is much more formal, with flowers, decorative (useless) accents, and a big Taschen coffee table book opened to her favorite botanical illustration. Tell me, what's on your coffee table and what do you think it says about you?

Dress Your Table With Cinnamon and Roses

Walking around the tasting tent at the Food Network NYC Food and Wine Festival, I came across a fabulous decorating idea - it's perfect for Fall or the holidays - that I plan to re-create in a tablescape. You can to, here's how to:

Start by covering the table with a simple cloth. Arrange a thin layer of gauzy fabric over the tablecloth.
Sprinkle the table with rose petals in a color that matches the party's theme. Place the cinnamon sticks around the rose petals.

This is an inspiring idea that can translate into many different table decorations. You could wrap twine around cloth napkins and place a cinnamon stick inside each one. Or make placecard holders by cutting a slit into the side of the cinnamon and sliding a piece of labeled cardstock inside. What do you think? Have you ever used cinnamon sticks as party decor?

For your first Thanksgiving don't worry about decorating your entire house, instead make sure everything is CLEAN and light a fire if you have a fire place. Focus your energy on creating a gorgeous table setting. Start looking for table decor now - a few weeks before the dinner - and set the table several days before Thanksgiving. Cover the table with a deep chocolate brown cloth. On top of this, add a colorful red and orange runner, and matching placemats. For a beautiful yet affordable centerpiece, arrange collected, dried leaves, pumpkins, and dried wheat. Simple, shiny plates put attention on the food and not the dinnerware. Light candles and fill vases with autumn colored flowers. Invest in a large turkey serving platter, festive napkin rings, and a wine glass set complete with water glasses.
