Style for Style: How to Wear Tartan Skirt

So you've probably already taken my word for it that tartan is a trend and have seen it emerge on the High Street but when you get the items home, how do you actually wear it? Well I have taken on the task for you!

I picked a tulip shaped check skirt (£15) from Dorothy Perkins which I particularly liked because of the unusual shape. The pleating detail give the skirt a Vivienne Westwood edge and definitely makes it look more expensive.

I really like plaid skirts, particularly in a classic school girl way with a black jumper so I teamed it with a roll neck batwing jumper. I then thought the ensemble would be finished out nicely with a pair of heeled brogues but it's so cold today that I had to go for flat boots.

Plaid skirts are so detailed that it's best to keep everything else plain and simple. It's a great winter item as it adds colour to a look and tartan is often quite a heavy weave. What do you think?

Come Fab Finding With Me: On Trend Tartan

There is a slight twist to this week's Fab Finding challenge. Instead of asking you to put an outfit together for an occasion, I am asking you to put together an outfit for a trend! Over the next few weeks I will be asking you to put together different outfits for Autumns key trends starting with tartan!

I'll start you off with a grey slouch beanie hat (£8) from Topshop. The only guidance is that your ensemble must include an item of tartan clothing. Whether it be a tartan skirt, jacket, trousers or any other clothing item is entirely up to you.

Trend Alert: Tartan

Classic heritage fabrics such as tweed, tartan and checks featured heavily on the catwalk for Autumn/Winter. Leading the way was British designer Henry Holland who created his own tartan pattern and based his entire House of Holland collection on the indigo fabric. The most memorable piece was a tiered tartan dress modeled by Henry's BFF Agyness Deyn. Dolce & Gabbana produced a D&G line inspired by our very own Queen with neatly tied head scarves and midi-length tartan skirts. The trend has already begun to take over the High Street with Topshop particularly pioneering the style. See below for some items already available.

I Want This Wardrobe: Serena van der Woodsen

On this week's episode of Gossip Girl we saw the girls return to school as Serena gives Blair a run for her money as Queen Bee.

At school the girls have a unique take on their uniform which included plenty of accessories for Isabel and Penelope, vintage lace for Blair, and a layered look for Serena. I like how she wore a biscuit coloured waistcoat over a plain white tee for a subtle contrast and kept accessories nude.

Serena always wears short skirts (and with legs like that, why not?) Copy the look with a tartan bow tulip skirt (£30) and patent pumps. Since it's typically not warm enough in the UK to have bare legs, update the look with tights. See below to get Serena's school style.

Style for Style: How to Wear Lace Tights

Last week I suggested ways to wear coloured-opaque tights, and today I'm continuing the tights focus with on-trend lace. Lace appeared on the catwalk at Prada where it shaped everything from skirts, dresses and handbags, but how does that translate to mere mortals like us, you ask?

There is a lot of lace on the High Street nowadays, but wearing them in the form of tights is an easy way to look stylish without going all out. They are also classy and look incredible when paired with another Autumn trend; tartan. I decided to team a pair of Fantasia tights by Jonathan Aston (£10) with a traditional tartan mini skirt for an Agyness Deyn-style punk look.

When I first saw white lace tights, I could think of nothing more than turning them into a pair of fingerless gloves like Madonna's in the '80's, however, I finally styled myself in a ensemble that's both chic and easy to wear. This Sweet Rose Lace (£11) pair reminds me of what I used to wear as a little girl. I matched them with funky t-bar heels and a Prince of Wales check knee-length dress so that I didn't look too Lolita. Which of these two different lace looks do you prefer?

London Fashion Week A/W 2009: Vivienne Westwood

Vivenne Westwood may be 68 years old, but she hasn't lost touch with the kids. She closed the second day of London Fashion Week on Saturday with this St. Trinian's inspired collection filled with checked mini skirts, ties and dresses from school scarf fabric. There was also plenty of her signature tartan on display with a bright colour palette and typical Westwood tailoring. One of the highlights of the show was Jo Wood making a catwalk appearance modeling a robe based on the one designed by Westwood for King's College.

Daisy Lowe also strutted down the runway for the first time at this London Fashion Week looking gorgeous with smokey eyes and voluminous hair. There were a few frocks with red carpet potenial including a corseted LBD and a one shouldered gown. Considering recent Westwood shows, this one was surprisingly unpolitical. Look for Less: Ralph Lauren Plaid Satchel

This autumn's favourite trend, tartan is just starting to emerge on the High Street in the form of jackets, trousers and skirts. As I am attempting to not appear to the outside world as a full victim of fashion (even though you dear readers know the truth) I have decided to merely hint at the trend. Hinting at trends is easiest done through accessories so why not indulge in a tartan/plaid handbag?

Ralph Lauren featured the designs on the catwalk in various forms from satchel to tote but if you cannot afford the designer price tag then the High Street has some great alternatives.

As always, Topshop are in on the trend with this Woodcutter check despatch bag (£30) which is a great way to inject colour in to your outfit. The lumberjack style bag has a leather strap making it stronger and features two buckles.

River Island also have a check shopper (£29.99) which is a great size for a day bag, particularly if you have to carry books or magazines around. It has a handle and a long fabric strap with chain detail.

Style for Style: Floral Tights

If you're bored of bright coloured tights, or if lace tights just aren't for you, maybe you're ready for the next challenge - floral tights. I've had a pair sitting at home for a while, but have been too nervous to try them on. Now that I've warmed to them, I thought I'd give them a shot and see what you think. The style is currently available all over the High Street from River Island to Dorothy Perkins, but my pair are by Celeste Stein (£12).

They're not quite as bright as the picture suggests (a relief), but I still want to break up the pattern. My advice is to keep it simple. Pairing them with stripes, dots or tartan would be more of an advanced complicated look to pull off.

They looked great with a short black dress as they added a shot of colour for Spring and over the knee boots helped to stop the pattern being overwhelming. If you're not comfortable with such a short skirt then try a longer length with heels that just reveals a hint of the pattern.

Back to Cool: Empire Records

With the current '90s grunge revival comes Dr Martens, tartan skirts and big knitted jumpers. When I see this look I can't help but think of classic '90s movie Empire Records starring Liv Tyler as Corey.

Corey is a bit clueless but adored by the oh-so-cute A.J. even though she's lusting after rock star Rex Manning. I like Corey's cute take on grunge with tiny kilt and fluffy cropped jumper.

There's a lot of tartan around at the moment following it appearance on the catwalk at D&G and House of Holland.
