2012: Apocalyptic Good Times

In terms of end-of-the-world movies, 2012 packs it all - a love story, teary family moments, action-packed adventure, over-the-top-CGI, and a ton of recycled film cliches - in a two and a half hour package. That's lengthy by today's standards, but I wasn't bored for a minute. This is pure escapist entertainment.

The film opens in 2009 as a scientist in India and his American associate Adrian Helmsley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) discover that the Earth's core is overheating. His forecast: Tectonic plates will shift, thereby causing a worldwide catastrophe that will wipe out the human race.

The real action goes down three years later in 2012 when, according to the Mayan calendar, the Earth will reach its end. The entire So-Cal coast starts crumbling, so our hero Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) and his family begin a journey to China where the governments around the world have supposedly assembled spaceships to carry select humans to safety.

What? You expected this to be plausible?

Of course not, but the film does include tons of cool CGI - volcanos, snow storms, giant tsunamis. It's like every disaster movie you've ever watched combined. (That should come as no surprise seeing as how the director is Roland Emmerich who created The Day After Tomorrow, Independence Day, and Godzilla.)

As for the characters, we've seen them all stereotyped in other films before, but they're still enjoyable here. (Even though I admittedly winced over a Russian family complete with a fur coat, tiny dog, and an employee named Sasha.) This is thanks to the actors who play their parts with believability, even when the scenes feel ridiculous. Ejiofor portrays a great bleeding heart swept up in a governmental plan that's looking out for No. 1, and Cusack pulls off his father role without being over-the-top or sappy. Also, watch for Woody Harrelson as a nutty conspiracy theorist living in Yellowstone National Park.

2012 is purely meant to be fun, and it succeeds. There's a constant barrage of cliff-hanger moments that never let up, and though you pretty much know where things are headed, it's easy to get sucked in.

Thandie Newton never fails to look gorgeous on the red carpet, and last night was no exception. Her look at the 2012 premiere was incredibly simple and easy but with tons of impact. On her eyes, she paired a thin line of pewter eyeliner with a taupe eye shadow brushed from lash line to brow bone. Then, she dusted a sheer wash of coral blush from the outer apples of her cheeks up to her temples, and finished up with a bright red lipstick with complementary orange undertones. The effervescent actress emoted maximum sophistication in Prabal's black-and-white floral frock at the 2012 movie premiere in LA yesterday. Last night at the 2012 Los Angeles Premiere, Thandie Newton wowed the red carpet with sleek hair and bold red lips. Below, we also see her pictured in nude lipstick at a Calvin Klein party in New York City, and back in June, she was photographed at the annual Summertime Serpentine Gallery party in Hyde Park with bright pink lips. I've had a mom crush on Thandie Newton for some time but it has since evolved into a family crush. The British beauty's petite features were passed down to her two darling daughters who also have a spunky sense of style and sass. The adorable girls, Ripley, 9, and Nico, 5, have their mother's delicious complexion and her sculpted cheeks. On top of those lovely characteristics, they also have fab hair that distinguishes the pair and gives them each something to strut about.

Aside from their inherent good looks, the young ladies appear to have quite a fabulous wardrobe. Lil Nico worked the red carpet of the Fantastic Mr. Fox London premiere in her sparkly leggings, velvet blazer and old school kicks. George Clooney Brings Jokes to a Fantastic LFF Opening

George Clooney changed out of his casual clothes into black tie for The Fantastic Mr Fox premiere at the opening of the London Film Festival in Leicester Square last night. He was joined by Elisabetta Canali, who wore a black outfit like Cindy Crawford and Myleene Klass, while Sophie Dahl matched her dress to the red carpet. Sophie's step-grandmother Felicity was also at the premiere, and said the author of the original book Roald Dahl would have loved it. Earlier in the day George attended a press conference at the Dorchester Hotel with his costars Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Jarvis Cocker and director Wes Anderson, and joked about adopting Brad Pitt's kids after Jarvis had to explain to him what "broody" meant

Pixie Channels Pebbles While Liv, Gwyneth & Stella Reunite

Pixie Geldof looked like she was dressed up as Pebbles from The Flintstones as she took to the catwalk for Jeremy Scott on the last day of London Fashion Week yesterday. Meanwhile good friends Liv Tyler, Gwyneth Paltrow and Stella McCartney posed for photos at the Established & Sons private viewing also in London, alongside Stella's sister Mary, Sam Taylor-Wood and gorgeous Brit actor Aaron Johnson from Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging. Back at Fashion Week, Estelle was in the front row to watch Pixie strut her stuff, while T4 presenter Jameela Jamil and model Ben Grimes hung out at the Charlotte Olympia Tea Party. Kate Moss Leads the Fashion Pack to Party in London

The fashion fun has moved from New York onto London, where Kate Moss led the pack of stars in the front row. She joined Philip Green and his daughter Chloe yesterday afternoon for the Topshop Unique show, which sent a colorful grunge-inspired collection down the runway. The Greens and Kate went on to host a private dinner last night at the Ivy, bringing out fashionable folks from England and beyond - Naomi Campbell mingled with Anna Wintour, Burberry designer Christopher Bailey, Jamie Hince, and Kate's soon-to-be business partner Simon Cowell.
