In the wake of Bea Arthur's death, much has been written about Arthur's contribution to groundbreaking TV shows that focused on powerful women and the process of aging. One interesting question is whether a television show like The Golden Girls would ever make today's TV lineup. A USA Today writer muses:
There are stars who, when they leave, you realize how far we've come.

I remember being on the subway one day eavesdropping on a conversation. A man in his early 20s was telling a woman he was with that when he was younger, no show could annoy his father more than the pioneering '70s show Maude, starring Bea Arthur, who passed away April 25 at the age of 87.
Bea Arthur's character, Maude, was the polar opposite of her television cousin, subservient Edith Bunker of All in the Family.

I was heartbroken to learn that Bea Arthur died this weekend in her LA home at the age of 86. Buying condoms is nothing to be embarrassed about; just ask the Golden Girls. That is, until the cashier announces to the whole store that you're buying ultrasensitive prophylactics in black. (Also, this could totally be a plotline on Sex and the City.)

The news of Estelle Getty's death has really put a cloud over my week. Since her passing, I keep finding myself wandering over YouTube to watch classic Golden Girls clips (the best are the ones with Getty's feisty old Sophia giving Blanche hell). It just reminds me of what a touchstone The Golden Girls really was.

Sad news this morning, Buzz readers: Estelle Getty (a.k.a. Sophia from The Golden Girls) has passed away at the age of 84.
Best known as Sophia, the snappy, sarcastic mother of Bea Arthur's character Dorothy, Getty endeared herself to audiences everywhere for being hilariously no-nonsense — effectivey shattering the stereotype of the sweet old lady.

The Golden Girls, a proto-Sex and the City, featured four sassy older gals who proved that you just get better — albeit crazier — with age. Everyone knows which SATC character she identifies with (Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte or Samantha). But put yourself forward in time a bit and play the game with these awesome geriatrics.
