Would You Bring a Pet to the Movies?

I've spotted a tiny Maltese secretly carried into a Columbus Circle theater and North loves to go to Film Night in the Park, but I can't imagine bringing bigger pups, cats, or naughty/noisy pets of any size to catch an indoor flick. Vienna's Admiral cinema has recently started a Doggy Day to compete with the new multiplex cinemas built nearby – for around $8 a (human) ticket, a pup can go in free and gets a blanket to make the seats more snuggly, too. I'm pretty sure this violates health codes here in the US, but let's pretend for a moment that it didn't – if you could, would you do it?

Keira Knightley to Tread the Boards in West End

Keira Knightley is set to make her West End debut in December. She will play an American film star opposite fellow Brit Damian Lewis in Moliere's The Misanthrope, which is due to open at the Comedy Theatre on 17 December and run until 13 March. Keira has already started preparing for the role ahead of official rehearsals next month, and has reportedly been working with a voice coach and taking singing lessons to help with projection.

Set in modern-day London (rather than the original 17th century Paris), the play will be directed by Thea Sharrock, who directed Daniel Radcliffe in Equus. With Jude Law and Sienna Miller currently on Broadway, and Daniel Radcliffe heading that way too, I'm really excited that at least one of our major stars will be on stage in London, what about you?

Does a Big Name Star Draw You to the Theatre?

Big name stars continue to tread the boards in the West End, and yesterday saw the press night of A Streetcar Named Desire starring an impressive Rachel Weisz alongside Ruth Wilson and Elliot Cowan, as well as the cast change of Calendar Girls, featuring Jack Ryder, Jerry Hall, June Brown, Jill Halfpenny and Gemma Atkinson. Jude Law continued to get mobbed after his performance in Hamlet last night, with fans queueing from 4am to get tickets. The growing involvement of A-list actors in stage productions has encouraged younger audiences to theatres and increased press coverage too. Pop Poll: Do Theatre Prices Put You Off?

Catherine Tate has been speaking out about the price of theatre tickets ahead of her stint treading the West End boards in Under The Blue Sky, saying:

"If you want more people to come to the theatre, don't put the prices at £50. You have to make theatre inclusive, and at the moment the prices are exclusive."

Having recently thought about taking some friends to see the awesome musical Hairspray, I balked at prices that topped £50 in some cases. Both straight plays and musicals have become so much more expensive!

Cheap tickets are definitely out there – I saw the brilliant Wicked from the rafters for a little over a tenner, but sometimes you want to be able to see the actors' faces without breaking the bank. Some theatres are great at providing cheaper tickets, but what do you think? Are some theatre prices putting you off attending plays and musicals?

Who's Most Fab at the American Ballet Theatre Spring Gala?

Last night was the 69th Annual American Ballet Theatre Spring gala at the Metropolitan Opera House in NYC. The elegant event saw equally chic attendees like Ivanka Trump, Iman, Claire Danes, Lindsay Price, and Coco Rocha. The go-to designer of the evening was Carolina Herrera and almost everyone had the blues - a gaggle of blue dresses draped gorgeous bods like Ivanka's. Josh Joins Hamlets Jude and David To Celebrate Theatre

Josh Hartnett, Jude Law and David Tennant slipped on their ties for the Evening Standard Theatre Awards at London's Royal Opera House yesterday. Josh is becoming quite a fixture on the London scene, thanks to his role in Rain Man, and he looked dreamy alongside his fellow thespians. While David will be bringing his take on Hamlet to London next week, we've got to wait until summer to see Jude in the role. Jude's ex, Sadie Frost, who wore a red dress to the ceremony yesterday, will also be treading the boards next year, as an obsessive Madonna fan. Sounds intriguing.

Pop Reports: Rain Man at The Apollo Theatre

Last night (with Lipstick Jungle on record) I took a trip to the theatre to see one of the first performances of Rain Man in the West End, starring Josh Hartnett and Adam Godley. The play is an adaptation of the movie starring Dustin Hoffman and Tom Cruise, about a selfish young guy named Charlie Babbitt, whose rich father dies and leaves him very little. The money goes into a trust for an older brother he didn't know he had, autistic-savant Raymond, who he takes on a road trip across the States.

Hartnett takes on the role of Charlie in his West End debut, and - let me get this out of the way first - is ridiculously gorgeous in his Armani suit. Charlie's a fast-talking, swearing-mad, permanently angry character when we first meet him at work.

At this very early stage in the run, Hartnett's extended pauses after other characters finish speaking sometimes feel like he's counting to ten in his head instead of thinking about what the other person's saying. Occasionally I found myself wondering if he'd forgotten his lines, before he quickly came in word perfect with the next one. A little more emotion or movement in these pauses would improve his performance, especially in the first half, and I'm sure as the run progresses he'll become more confident in these silences.

After Charlie meets Raymond, however, the character begins to soften and Hartnett reflects this well. A couple of the scenes between the two men were really touching, and I could feel the audience were completely behind them and their performances.

Adam Godley's (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) Raymond is predictably the stand out performance, he manages to keep a character that could too-easily become a caricature firmly in the realms of reality. He brightens up every scene he's in and yet to my mind gives a more comprehensive performance than Dustin Hoffman did in the movie - it really is a little odd when he comes out to take his bow with completely different posture and look in his eye. The more time the two actors spend together on stage seems to infuse Hartnett with more confidence as the play progresses, the second half was infinitely more confident than the first, and by the final touching scene I was almost completely won over.

I'm looking forward to seeing this play again a little later down the line in its run. At this stage I'd recommend it as a good play, with touching and comic moments and some strong acting. But by making the first half as confident as the second, it will be vastly improved.

(Also - Josh Hartnett? Still gorgeous. And in his underwear at one point.)

Love it or Hate it: Anna Friel at Theatre Awards

Since starring in the West End production of Breakfast at Tiffany's, Anna Friel has been on my style radar. The British actress has been spotted leaving the Royal Haymarket theatre in a range of stylish ensembles. Last night, she attended the Evening Standard Theatre Awards in London appearing on the red carpet in a one armed frock with sheer detailing. She wore it with back court heels and bright red lips. What do you think of her ensemble?

Jude Takes Hamlet From the UK to the US

Jude Law has taken Hamlet from its successful run at the West End to a brand new domain - Broadway! Last night was opening night in New York for Jude and the cast, and he had some famous support in the audience including Sam Mendes and fellow Brit actor in NYC, Ed Westwick. Also in the audience was his Closer costar Natalie Portman, who didn't pose for photographers outside, rushing past them and into the theatre with a big smile on her face. New dad Jude looked smart at the afterparty, where he celebrated with his costars, and rightly so as the reviews have been mostly favourable so far!

Stars Sparkle, Burn and Sing at the American Music Awards

The stars of last night's American Music Awards hit the red carpet before heading inside LA's Nokia Theatre for the main event. Janet Jackson kicked things off with an energetic eight minute performance, and the evening's first award then went to the Black Eyed Peas. The Black Eyed Peas went on to take the stage to do "Boom Boom Pow" with a special Nirvana twist. The show went on with performances from Carrie Underwood and Shakira, as well as from Jay-Z and Alicia Keys with "Empire State of Mind." Unfortunately not everyone stayed on their feet - both Jennifer Lopez and Adam Lambert took tumbles while singing.

There were other memorable performances, from Lady Gaga, Rihanna, and not to mention Whitney Houston's return to the stage before she received the International Award of Excellence. Jennifer Lopez had a beaming Marc Anthony in the crowd as she debuted her new single and showed off those customized Louboutins. Michael Jackson won multiple awards, and his brother Jermaine took the stage to accept the award on behalf of their family. Taylor Swift took home the most statues, though she wasn't there and the upset of the night might have to go to Gloriana who won breakthrough artist - make sure to check out the full list of winners. Kate Hudson joined her Nine costars Fergie and Nicole Kidman, though Kate did have a chance to share a special moment with Alex Rodriguez.
