Teri Hatcher to Try a Tri

Along with learning to play guitar and ballroom dance, Teri Hatcher explained that running in a triathlon was on her "bucket list." I am not sure how the guitar or the dancing are coming along, but her "bucket list" will soon be one item shorter, because Teri was tapped by Disney, parent company for her show Desperate Housewives, to lead a team at the upcoming Nautica Malibu Triathlon. The race is scheduled for September 13, and Terri has upped her regular training. She recently told People, the running is her least favorite segment of the race. About the four mile run that completes the race Hatcher said, "It's the least fun for me. By that point, I'm really tired, so the whole time I'm thinking, 'I'm not going to make it.'" Her participation in the triathlon will be doing more than whipping her into even better shape, Hatcher will be raising money for the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. What about you? Is participating in a triathlon on your "bucket list"?

Parents Are Training Kids as Young as Three For Triathlons

On your mark, get set, go! Much has been said about the importance of getting lil ones out of the house and outside to combat obesity, but are tots as young as three ready to take on a triathlon?

As the popularity of triathlons – which usually include a mix of running, biking and swimming – grows among adults, it is gaining even more interest with the younger set. Events designed especially for kids, such as the <http://www.svkidstri.org/">Silicon Valley Kids Triathlon allows up to 1,000 kiddos between three and 15 to participate in their event. For the small frys – children six and under – the race course includes a 25-yard swim, a one-mile bike ride and a quarter mile run. Other events, such as IronKids, based on the IronMan series of races, have the youngsters swim 50 meters, bike two miles and run 500 yards. Doctors warn that kids need to train for these races in order to avoid injuries and dehydration.

Though many of the events are untimed in an effort to reduce the competitive nature of the races, and all participants receive medals and recognition at the finish line, are such events a healthy way to get kids active?

Tri-Jargon: Brick Workout

A brick workout doesn't mean lugging around bricks while running. It's a term for back-to-back workouts of two different elements of a triathlon, like biking then immediately going for a run.

While there is no one way to do a brick workout, it is better to do the disciplines in the order you would in a race, so your body can acclimate to changing gears for the next physical challenge. This means follow a swim workout with a bike ride - sometimes I swim in the basement pool at my gym and sprint upstairs to an hour spin class - or take a bike ride then a run. You can use these workouts to practice your transitions, or simply work on increasing your endurance. After doing a brick workout, I find it quite satisfying to sing the line, "She's a brick house," over and over again.

78-Year-Old Nun Trains Daily For Many Triathlons

This is one sister act that would be tough to follow. With more than 320 triathlons under her belt - 40 of which were Ironman-class events - 78-year-old Sister Madonna Buder is truly something special. This 5'7", 115-pound energizer nun told ABC News, "Well, you know, as long as God is giving you your health, there's no reason to stop."

Remarkably, Buder began running at age 47 when a priest suggested she try it for spiritual enrichment, and five years later she added swimming and cycling to her athletic acumen. Following her own advice to "never give up and never slow down," Buder schedules her seven-days-a-week training regimen around working at her church.

You don't have to wear a habit to get into this healthy one. Get inspired by this incredibly dedicated nun and triathlete when you watch her in action. To see a video of this active sister, just read more.

SheROX - Danskin's Women's Triathlon Series

She swims. She rides. She runs. She rocks! Danskin sponsors the longest running women's triathlon series in the US, and the races are fast approaching.

If you've always wanted to do a triathlon, these sprint distance triathlons are for you. Here's the lowdown on the distances: .8K (.5 mile) swim, 19K (12 mile) bike, 5K (3.1 mile) run. Not only are these races fun and friendly, but Danskin also has a mentoring program to help newbies from the start (as in the first day of training) to finish (when you cross the finish line). I must say, doing a triathlon is one of the most empowering experiences - physically, mentally, and emotionally. Plus they have many different waves. The elite pros start first, followed by the amateur elites, and then groups separated by age. There is also a wave for cancer survivors and a buddy wave, if you want to compete with a pal in a different age group.

The first race is May 9 in Arizona, which means you need to start training now. These races are very popular and some races are already sold out, so if you're interested in trying a tri you should sign up soon. To see the race dates, just read more.

Tempe, AZ - May 9

Orlando, FL - May 10 (SOLD OUT)

Miami, FL - May 31

Austin, TX - June 7

Aurora, CO - June 28

New England/Webster, MA - July 26

Philadelphia - Aug. 2

Seattle - Aug. 16 (SOLD OUT)

NY Metro - Sept. 13 (SOLD OUT)

Chicagoland - Sept. 27

Los Angeles - TBD

Click here to start the registration process. Let me know in the comments section below if you are planning on doing a Spring distance triathlon this year.

Do a Tri With a Team

If you want to try your hands at a triathlon, but are worried about being able to do the whole thing on your own, then think about getting a team together. Recently Matt Damon completed the running portion of the Escape from Miami Triathlon as a member of a relay team along with his stepfather and family friend. Doing just one portion of the race is ideal because it enables you to get your feet wet (literally speaking if you're the swimmer) in the triathlon world, but takes away the fear of having to do something you're not ready to do or feel comfortable doing (or simply just don't want to do). My sister-in-law does a tri with her parents every year and I've always thought it was a fabulous idea, not to mention a great bonding experience. Maybe the saying should be that the family that tris together, stays together.

Would You Rather Swim, Bike or Run?

Even the ladies at Elastic Waist have created the Lazy Waister's Triathlon, spreading the mileage out over the course of five weeks.

Another way to approach the triathlon is to enter as a team and split up the different legs of the race with two other friends. It is a great way to try a tri and is much less daunting than doing the entire race yourself. So if you were to make a team with your friends . . .

Tri It Like J Lo and Matthew

What do Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey have in common, besides their skintight matching outfits?

Both celebs participated in the Malibu Nautica Triathlon yesterday. The race benefits LA Children's Hospital and it make sense that two new parents would want to help a renowned pediatric hospital. This sprint distance triathlon is comprised of a half-mile swim, an 18-mile bike ride, and four mile run. The celebrity charity distances might be a little shorter, but J Lo and Matthew still jumped in the ocean, pedaled on a bike, and finished all that up with a run. A well rounded workout for a Sunday morning.

Having done a sprint triathlon recently, I guess I now have something in common with these celebs too. I must say, I think training for any kind of endurance race is a great motivator, but since triathlons are all about cross training, they're great for preventing overuse injuries. So I think you should try a tri if you haven't already. If you're looking for a race check out Active.com for race listings near you. And here's a training schedule you can follow.

For more shots of these celebs in action, read more.

Jennifer Lopez Is Optimistic About Upcoming Tri

I recently told you about how Jennifer Lopez, coming off of only six months since having twins, is training for a triathlon next month.

Now, Self has crowned her the Most Inspiring Woman of 2008. And for good reason too; she's not trying to win the race but it's become a goal of hers since she was eight months pregnant. Something else I did not know is that she is also racing to raise money for the Children's Hospital Los Angeles! No pressure or anything. Sept. 14 is the big day for Jennifer and I'll certainly be cheering her on. To see an interview of Jennifer talking about her upcoming event, just read more.

Here's more from an ABC interview:

I like Jennifer's views on goal setting - if you tell yourself you're going to do something then just do it. You may not be a Self cover girl and have the whole world watching to see if you succeed, but you can still hold yourself accountable for all your fitness goals. Joining a program such as Team in Training is a great way to add a little extra emphasis on reaching the finish line.

I've actually recently completed my first triathlon - yay! - and if you're like Jennifer and training for your first, you may want to take a look at some helpful tips that I learned about the actual day of the race.

Jennifer Lopez Training for a Tri

New mother of twins, Jennifer Lopez has decided to do a triathlon this Fall. She is working with celebrity trainer, Gunnar Peterson to get ready for her bike, swim, and run against time. OK Magazine got the scoop from Gunnar - here are highlights:

“The workouts change daily, depending on the day, the time and the freedom,” he says. “She’s going to get it done because she wants to.”

But don't think the workout regime takes time away from her and Marc Anthony's new twins, Max and Emme, 5 months. Having juggled multiple careers and business ventures in her life, the actress has everything "in check," Gunnar says, and would never prioritize something else over her children.

"She may be the most efficient multitasker I know. She literally has every aspect of her life in check,” he says. “She doesn’t have a nanny, a chef or a nutritionist. She makes time for the kids. Family comes first.”

Having twins is an athletic event, not to mention a test of endurance, in its own right so I am thoroughly impressed that Jennifer has her sights on a tri. Go J Lo, go!
