A New Contender For Game Night?

I don't know about you, but I'm a little mad at Trivial Pursuit. It's kind of...regressed? It's gotten a little too easy with all of the "90s Edition/Pop Culture Edition" and whatnot. So I'm in the market for a new trivia game. I wonder if this is it?

It's called Fact or Crap and that's the gist of it. They give questions like, "Jimmy Carter was the first U.S. President to be born in a hospital." and you would say, "fact." Or, "the sun is so big you could fit more than 100,000 earths inside it," to which the answer is "crap." Okay, I don't know if it stands to be more challenging than Trivial Pursuit, but I'm game to find out!

Rumor has it that the next game Apple will be releasing is the iQuiz- a text based quiz game that will be included with new iPods. After briefly appearing in the French iTunes store, iQuiz will be a game that asks you questions about the music in your iTunes library.

Album art, video trivia, and the ability to create trivia packs to share with friends are suspected features. The release date is still uncertain, although it may be available sooner rather than later from the online iTunes store. I don't know about you, but I think this game could be alot of fun! But then again, I love all things iPod and especially things that involve trivia!

Foodie Fight = Fantastic Fun

Last Friday night, my sister surprised me with a new trivia game by publishing house Chronicle Books. Created for serious food lovers, the game is addictive and informative. The Foodie Fight ($18.95) is like Trivial Pursuit but with questions related to food history, celebrity chefs, cultural cuisines, cooking techniques, and more. The game can be played in teams or alone. Each correct answer is rewarded with a small playing piece that fits into the color coded cards. The first team to answer the most questions, and completely fill in the card, wins. To find out what I thought of the game, read more.

I love the concept and even though my team lost (!), I had a fabulous time playing. Many of the questions (Whose best-selling 1980 chocolate cookbook was recently republished?, What chef was known for his Italian cooking show in the 1970s?) seem geared toward an older generation of foodies and proved to be very difficult to answer.

Other stumping questions were related to pop culture (What was the name of the deli frequented on the series Roseanne?) and food processing techniques (in the produce and vegetable freezing process, what does IFQ stand for?). The easiest to answer were those about cooking and food identification.

The game's main flaw isn't the puzzling questions (trivia wouldn't be trivia without baffling questions!), but the lack of trivia cards. The compact box contains only 168 trivia cards and while this may seem like plenty, if playing more than one round or several times over the weekend, there aren't enough questions. When played infrequently, the game will retain its mystery.

Despite the shortage of trivia cards and the occasional head-scratching question, the game is superb fun and makes an excellent gift for any food lover. Have you played? What did you think?

Counting down the days until the release of New Moon? Me too! Thankfully there are fun Twilight-inspired games to keep you entertained before the big day. I've already talked about the interactive Twilight Tracker app, but there's now a new game from Summit Entertainment and RealArcade for AT&T cell phone owners called the Twilight Mobile Game.

This new game can be downloaded on any AT&T handset (all wireless carriers will be available in the next few weeks) from here and includes hundreds of trivia questions from the movie. Unfortunately the game isn't free (costs between $7-$10 depending on your cell phone), so maybe the cheaper $3 Twilight Tracker iPhone app is a better option for those on a budget. Tennis 101: On-Court Etiquette

Welcome back to Tennis 101. In honor of the 2009 US Open this week, I'm serving up a series about the sport, from what to expect at your first lesson to trivia about US Open champs.

Today, we'll tackle the topic of tennis etiquette. Tennis has a reputation for being a very polite sport, and while it's less stuffy than it used to be, there are still many niceties you need to know - especially since, as an amateur, you won't have officiates to make the calls. Here are some manners to keep in mind.

If you arrive at a court while other people are playing, wait until the point is over before passing behind to get to your own.
If your ball rolls into the adjacent court, don't run after it. Simply say "thank you" and wait for your neighbor to return the ball when it's convenient. If a ball rolls onto your court, toss it back to the player it belongs to.

Since stray balls are distracting and potentially dangerous, you should call a "let" if a ball rolls onto the court while the point is in play. A "let" is basically a do-over, and the point should be replayed.
When making calls, always speak clearly, loudly, and matter-of-factly to inform your opponents if a ball is out or fair.
If you have any doubt about whether a ball is out, you should make the call in favor of your opponent.
When playing doubles, communicate with your partner when it's unclear who should go after a shot. Simply say "yours," "mine," or "got it!"
Make sure you have two balls when it's your serve, and call out the score before your first serve.
At the end of the game, shake hands with your opponents.
