Album Stream: Ryan Adams, Easy Tiger

Ryan Adams is one of those love-him-or-hate-him artists, and I tend to go both ways, depending on what the insanely prolific singer-songwriter is doing at any particular moment. I find some of his rock-oriented albums annoying, but I dug a lot of the songs on the country-leaning Jacksonville City Nights.

Tomorrow, Adams releases his eighth solo album, Easy Tiger, which you can now stream in its entirety online. At times, Easy Tiger sounds almost like easy listening, but the collection also contains some more traditional rock and alt-country offerings, like the bell-laden electric anthem "Halloween Head."

Your Two Cents: Are You Hitting the Black Friday Sales Today?

It's that time of year again - though you might be too stuffed with turkey dinner to even think about moving, the promise of Black Friday discounts is pretty motivational, and usually gets me into a store or two. Last year, quite a few of you chose to stay out of the mall, but there were definitely some brave, savvy shoppers who made it a point to hit the sales. What say you this year? What’s simply written off as a lewd display of machismo is often a great deal more complex.

Climate plays a critical role in male package adjustment. In the humidity of summer months many guys experience what the medical community refers to as Swamp Balls or Jungle Johnson. Shifting things around is often our only hope for relieving this dreaded, Amazonian discomfort. Scientifically speaking, when the crotch heats up, the ball sac loosens, thinning the skin and causing temperatures to rise. Our balls begin to slide haphazardly against one another, not unlike two Jell-O-lubed wrestlers jockeying for position in the ring. It’s our job to step in and separate the two to give them time to cool off.

Underwear physics are also worth discussing. In the world of briefs, sometimes we simply need to push the curious old turtle back into its shell, if you know what we mean (the turtle is our penis.) With boxers, it’s very common for the fabric to ride up into the crevices of our inner thighs and to drag an excruciating pube or two with it. Rolling the fabric down must be done very carefully to minimize the pain, which explains why our hands are actually inside our pants a lot.

Hopefully the next time you see a guy fiddling publicly with his privates, you’ll be able to temper your disgust with a little empathy. It’s no picnic going through life with a penis, balls and a code of decency all at the same time.

I could be wrong, but it sounds like someone showed someone else their vagina a little too soon. It’s certainly not to say that waiting a year before having sex is always advisable. However, depending on who he is and how well you’ve gotten to know each other, sometimes it’s important to form more of a bond before doing the vulva waltz.

Sadly there’s a great deal of truth to the notion the guys lose steam once the chase has ended, so it stands to reason that the more you’ve connected while wearing pants, the more reason he has to be invested in the relationship.

Let him get to know that kooky laugh of yours or that adorable way you scrunch your lips when you’re concentrating on something. God, I love it when you do that. Do some activities that will let him get to know the real you: go to a movie together, have a picnic, maybe swim with some dolphins. Why are dogs so carefree about barking? Why are birds so cavalier about chirping? Why do lions feel they’ve earned the right to roar? I’m not afraid to make a fourth animal analogy if it helps to illustrate the point that these species are meant to do these things - just as guys are meant to fart. It’s our body’s way of communicating with you. It’s saying, “Hey, I feel really comfortable around you, Leslie,” or “Wow, those enchiladas are passing through me like a fu**ing freight train.”

There are plenty of repressed guys out there who actually aren’t big farters, but running into the arms of a gas-free companion might not be the utopia you think it is. If a guy is sealing up his rear hole, then chances are he’s sealing up his other holes too. Like his fun hole and his emotional hole. It’s your choice, you can be with a guy with sealed holes, or you can learn to appreciate a natural, open-hearted gesture for what it is – and instead of rolling your eyes the next time your guy breaks wind, try looking over at him and whispering, “I feel close to you too. Make love to me, you smelly son-of-a-bitch.”

On paper, we know this one doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But then, neither does whacking off into a perfectly good sock and we do that too.

Ever since that magical adolescent day when we discovered there was amusement park in our pants, there was no turning back. We were powerless. Our penis became the puppeteer and when it told us it was time to dance, we danced. Boy, did we dance.

Please don’t make the mistake of taking this personally. For guys, masturbating is as unsexual, unromantic and unceremonial as doing Sudoku. It’s simply our default time killer. If there’s a two-minute lull at any given moment, our brain’s job is to assess the situation to determine the viability of a tug session. It’s very similar to the “Fight or Flight” adrenaline response, which incidentally, has been formally updated in some periodicals as “Fight, Flight or Masturbate Syndrome.”

Remember, this isn’t about you. It’s about us, our penises, maybe some lotion and the biological demons that we certainly can’t be held accountable for.

Introducing: Ask Two Guys About Guys

A few months ago, I stumbled upon the awesome book Don't Be That Guy, an illustrated book that delineated the myriad types of guys no guy should be.

There are the guys who verbally encourage themselves while working out at the gym, or guys who wear sunglasses at nonprofessional poker tournaments, or guys with Amish beards who aren't Amish (my personal fave). The list goes on.

In addition to being funny, Don't Be That Guy gave me a peek into the male psyche. It was refreshing to have a couple dudes honestly (and hilariously) list what bugs them about other guys. (I can't always be the one complaining about men!)

Well, lucky for us, writer Colin Nissan and illustrator Sean Farrell agreed to answer some nagging lady-questions for a few weeks (and maybe beyond?). So stay tuned for tomorrow's installment of Ask Two Guys About Guys, where the two guys explain the ancient mystery of why some men insist on masturbating even though they have regular sex partners. This should be fun!

Your Two Cents: Is There Room in Your Holiday Budget For Charity?

The holiday season isn't just about gift-giving - even while the budget may be stretched, it's also the time of year to give to charity. It's no secret that things are tight this year. The recession is changing the way we holiday shop, but is it also changing our philanthropic spirit of giving for a good cause?

Apparently so. Charitable foundations and organizations throughout the country are suffering from a lack of funds - the size of charitable giving just isn't sizable enough. Nonprofits, especially on the local level, are dealing with some serious cutbacks in their budgets, thanks to an economic climate that makes giving to a cause more of a luxury than it used to be. Where organizations used to rely on the generosity of philanthropic donors, they are now turning to the government for aid.

It's unfortunate, but while philanthropy is still a valued cause for giving, there are many who just may not be able to offer support this year. Of course, there are other ways to help out - volunteering, for one - but I'm curious: Is writing a check for charity out of the question this holiday season? Or are you still making room in your budget for a charitable donation?
