Ugly is The New Pretty

Sometimes I feel my whole life's work is dedicated to the making of pretty. Not just myself, but friends, family, you guys; I even like to make my cat look a little more attractive! Beautiful people apparently earn more, have more friends and happier lives and yet with a recent article in The New York Times it seems that ugliness is making a timely comeback.

Of course, if beauty is in the eye of the beholder then so too is ugliness. It is shocking to think that in our enlightened age ugliness is still associated with evil and fear, with villains and monsters. Think of the recent Halloween characters -the Wicked Witch of the West, Freddy Krueger and repulsive zombies.

However, according to the paper, ugliness has recently emerged as a serious subject of study and academic interest, not least because of the success of television’s Ugly Betty, which ABC promoted with a “Be Ugly” campaign stressing self-esteem for girls and young women. Various sociologists and writers have begun to examine what it means to be ugly. They have suggested that, while much of it goes unnoticed, there is actually widespread discrimination against the unattractive.

“It hasn’t been politically correct to talk about uglyism,” said Anthony Synnott, a professor of sociology at Concordia University in Montreal, who is publishing a paper next month on ugliness. “But there’s no reason for us to think that beautiful people are actually good and ugly people evil, yet we do.”

Some cities in the US, including Washington, San Francisco and Santa Cruz, California, have actually passed laws banning employment discrimination based on looks. However, legal action on behalf of the unattractive can be complicated, as obviously no-one wants to think of themselves as being ugly. Sherry F. Colb, a law professor at Cornell explains,

“One pitfall is the distinction between people’s identities as members of a race, religious group or gender, versus as a member of a group of ugly people. Because of successful identity politics, people have come to identify profoundly with other kinds of groups, but it’s not likely with ‘I am an ugly person and let’s have a meeting of all ugly people.’ Most people in general would want to disclaim membership. It’s like declaring yourself a member of the clueless.”

Did Ugly Betty Really Need a Makeover?

Ever since news of Betty's "prettier" look next season broke, I have to admit that I've been a little bummed. It's not that I don't understand that characters evolve, it's just that Betty has always been so heroic because she's a person of substance, one who doesn't depend on her looks to make her life full. Ugly Betty is an import, a rewrite of a hit telenovela from Colombia, Betty La Fea. And in the original series, Betty suddenly lost her braces, got great hair, turned out to be gorgeous, and promptly married the Daniel character. It was a complete betrayal of everything that had been good about the show, and totally reconfirmed that the only way to be loved is by achieving the fashion world's most unrealistic beauty ideals. Never mind that Betty had proven herself a million times over - she was hot now, so she could be happy. I'm just hoping that our version doesn't fall into the same trap. I love Betty for who she is, and I think a great, cute guy should, too.

Jessica Really Appeals to the Teens

Apparently Jessica and Cash didn't have time to take advantage of being in Paris after Eva and Tony's wedding, because the two were at the airport on their way out yesterday morning. And don't they just look thrilled as usual (though I'm loving her coat)? Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer may have been a bit overshadowed by the other Summer blockbusters, but the Teen Choice Awards committee took notice and nominated Jessica for 3 awards: Hissy Fit, Female Hottie, Action Adventure Actress. The show isn't until the end of August, but you can vote here. Mark my words, teens love Jessica, but she may have to lose to Seacrest in the Hissy Fit category.

America Has to Work For Her Nominations

America Ferrera pulled on Betty's neon coat to film scenes for Ugly Betty with Michael Urie in NYC yesterday. We weren't treated to a new episode last week, but we'll get a fresh batch of drama at Mode magazine tonight. America's hard work has earned her a nomination for a SAG award, so hopefully the actress will make it to the show for another fabulous award season red carpet.

Ugly Betty is almost back! America Ferrera and Ashley Jenson took a break on the set in LA yesterday and - lucky us! - we only have to wait one more week before Betty is back on the air with new episodes. I don't want to say anything, but Christina doesn't look very pregnant here, hmmm. I wasn't shy about how annoying I started to find Betty during the first half of the season, but you know what they say - absence makes the heart grow fonder, and I can't wait to have Betty back on Thursday nights.

America Ferrera Is Far From Ugly

America Ferrera looks anything but ugly in this month's W Magazine. While she may not look like an Ugly Betty, apparently she's very much like her TV counterpart at heart. In the interview, America talks about growing up as an outsider, dealing with media attention, and her rise to stardom. Here are highlights:

On growing up in a predominately white community:"As early as second grade I remember feeling really different and isolated," she says. "I had the hugest crush on a boy, and my best friend had a crush on him too. One day he said to me, 'I like your best friend more because she's paler and she has freckles.' And it was right then that I began to feel like, Oh wow, I'm different."

On her decision to join the cast of Ugly Betty:
"Honestly I never saw myself doing TV," says Ferrera, "but Salma was so convincing. Salma is the kind of person who could sell you, like, a used stereo. She promised me that it would be done in the right way, and I just trusted her."

On being in the limelight:
In February one weekly gossip rag ran with a story that Ferrera and Williams were engaged, giving rise to BETTY TO WED headlines all over the Internet. "It's totally not true!" she insists of the rumor. "And his mom called me and my sisters were calling me, and I was like, 'Are you kidding? Did you not think I would tell you first?' And then I put out a statement that it wasn't true, and that became a whole news story. So now it's news when something doesn't happen? Like, news flash: California did not get hit by a hurricane today."

We love that America has a sense of humor about her fame and is one of the more grounded young stars out there. She certainly represents a big step in the right direction towards providing a better role model for young girls.

Lindsay, America and Samantha on Set While LL Gets Graphic

Lindsay Lohan was in uniform and hard at work on Ugly Betty in NY yesterday with both her costar America Ferrera and lady Samantha Ronson by her side on set. Lindsay and America may not be BFFs on TV considering how LL's character treated Betty in the season finale, but luckily in real life the two girls have no need to battle since they're both favorites with spots - Lohan at No. 32, America No. 65 - on this year's PopSugar100! If you're as excited as we are to see Lindsay playing a funny role you'll also love the news that she's coming soon in video game form. Clueless, Pretty in Pink and, yup, Mean Girls games are all on their way, which I cannot wait to see.

America's Betty Returns Tomorrow!

America Ferrera took a little break from filming Ugly Betty in LA on Sunday. It looks like a Betty makeover thankfully isn't in the works for season two - why mess with what works? America must be happy to be back on set after her Emmy win a few weeks ago. I just got into Ugly Betty over the summer, but it's certainly one of the cliffhangers I can't wait to see resolved.
