Is Your Local Starbucks Closing?

By now you must have heard that Starbucks is closing 600 of its stateside coffee shops. Last week Starbucks released the official list of the closing stores with a grand total of 616 closures. The closing stores are company-operated stand alone locations; no bookstore, super market, or airport Starbucks will be shuttered. A recent study by analyst Sharon Zackfia, found that 54 percent of the closing locations are within two miles of another Starbucks. The study also breakdowns the closures by region:

The central part of the country will lose about 13 percent of Starbucks stores that are operated directly by the Seattle company. The Southeast will lose 10 percent, the Northeast 8 percent and the West 5 percent.

Do Facials Promise Too Much?

Do you get regular facials? According to the International Spa Association, they are the third most popular spa service. However, some estheticians feel that dermatologists often downplay the effectiveness of their services, the New York Times reports. On the flip side, some dermatologists feel that facials create unrealistic expectations and are just not worth the cost. Fight!

"Getting a facial is a great cost to cut," Dr. Leslie Baumann, a dermatology professor at University of Miami, told the newspaper. "It’s not doing anything preventative or anything long term for your skin." (Baumann does acknowledge that estheticians offer great advice sunscreen and home-care regimens.)

Dermatologists also worry that facials are too one size fits all, although many estheticians now pick the service for the patient, as opposed to having the patient pick the service themselves. "At the end of the day whether you’re spending $40 or $400," said Celeste Hilling, the founder of Skin Authority, "if that facial doesn’t have active ingredients for what you want, it’s not worth it."

Personally, I enjoy facials, but go to the dermatologist when I need serious skin care. Do you think facials help your skin, or are they just a fun spa treatment?

Bella Interview: James Vincent, Makeup Artist

If you're in Florida this weekend, you might want to check out The Makeup Show Miami, a two-day event featuring all the makeup know-how you could imagine. I recently talked with lead makeup artist James Vincent, who created a beautiful face for the event. He has worked with celebrities including Liv Tyler and Jordin Sparks (pictured), he's created looks for designers such as Christopher Deane, and he even created his own makeup line, Pretty Pretty. (Also, he has some bad-ass tattoos.) Read on to find out about the weekend ahead and his unusual path to becoming a makeup artist.

What inspired you to create this makeup look for the show?
It was Miami's art-deco history and love for color and texture. And definitely the weather and the influence of so many different cultures on Miami. From the beginning of US history, Florida has always had a rich influence from Latin cultures, and I think Miami still has that today.

Who can wear the show's look?
Anybody! Everything that I do and everything we do at [event planner] The Powder Group is for all races, and it's important to me personally because so many of my clients are women of color. Regardless of your skin tone, you should be able to wear the look that you're seeing.

So what will you be doing when you're at the show?
The show is a way for makeup artists and people who are interested in makeup to see what's happening with makeup lines, what they're showing next to get to meet the people who own the makeup lines. And it's a chance to participate in forums about things going on in the industry, to look at educating themselves, and to see what's coming next. We have workshops, everything from makeup for women of color to airbrushing to bridal makeup to special effects. It's a really amazing way to get information, and we try to create an atmosphere of community and education for makeup artists and people who are interested.

You concentrated in women's studies at Brown University. How did you make the transition into makeup artistry?
I started with makeup because we started a camp when I was in college for children with HIV. Then after starting the camp, the Body Shop started a camp for children with HIV in England, and they hired me to do some program development. Then I worked in the store and started looking at how the industry really can affect and empower women. Makeup doesn't have to play up women's insecurities; it can really be a tool to make people feel better about themselves. Then I moved to Atlanta to write my thesis and MAC hired me. MAC at the time was so amazing because it was all races, it was all sexes, it was something that worked on everyone.

From there I just continued. I never went back to social work, unfortunately - although I say I do more counseling now! So that's how I got started, and throughout my career I've always tried to keep my belief system in my makeup. I don't shoot with magazines or companies that I feel exploit women. Everybody that I work for and everyone I work with has to have my belief system or it doesn't really work.

Here's how to get the look, courtesy of The Makeup Show Miami:

Face: James starts the look with a bronze base of Solar Glow by Temptu New York applied with a design’s Perfect Face Shader brush to smooth the liquid bronzer seamlessly into the skin to create a glow from within.

Eyes: For the eyes, the soul of South Beach is expressed through the suntan metallics of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ Miami Loose Color Concentrate and Face Atelier’s Ultra Bronzer in Cognac. Onyx and Indigo Eye Accent Pencils by Pencil Me In add just the right amount of sensuality, and a quick smudge of the pencil along the lash line and inner rim gives a sophisticated smolder to the look. For a final touch for the eyes, James adds Three Custom Color’s Peacock Eye Shadow at the inner corner of the eye and along the lash line using Crown Brush’s unique Small Chisel Brush.

Lips and cheeks: For the lip and cheek color, James worked with Three Custom Color to create Poppy Lip and Cheek Stain, the perfect new coral, which he used on both the apple of the cheek and as the lip color. To complete the look, a touch of Face Atelier’s Ultra Bronzer in Cognac was added at the top of the cheekbone, and a combination of Diva’s Peach and Bling Diva Glosses from Big Girl Cosmetics were layered on the lip.

Bravo (Finally) Announces Top Chef 3 Contestants

They've also let us in on this elusive mystery "special." As mentioned before, season 3 starts on Wednesday, June 13, but the June 6 special 4-Star All-Stars, which pits chefs from Season 1 and Season 2 against each other, sounds fantastic!

Beauty Byte: Does This Copper Pillowcase Reduce Wrinkles?

Maybe you've heard of the "beauty bedding" hype before: Aromatherapy mattress to soothe the senses, contoured anti-wrinkle pillows that decrease compression, aloe vera blankets that moisturize, and even seaweed-lined mattresses that supposedly refresh the skin. The latest craze? Copper-infused pillowcases that claim to reduce wrinkles, bacteria, and dust mites.

It all sounds too good to be true. Well, is it? That's just what many dermatologists are asking, according to The New York Times. In order to determine the effectiveness of such ingredients, expensive studies must be performed - and that's often a step that is skipped, replaced by costly advertising instead. Also, many of these products use nanotechnology, which breaks down ingredients to microscopic levels, a practice that is currently under fire from a safety perspective.

New York City plastic surgeon Dr. Yael Halaas has been using the SkinGlow Cupron Copper Technology Pillow Protector ($20 to $25) for several months. "I think it’s fabulous for acne control," she told the newspaper. On the flip side, Dr. Leslie Baumann, of the University of Miami Cosmetic Medicine and Research Institute, is skeptical of the antiaging claims. "We know copper peptide does this [has antiaging effects], but not regular copper," she said. "And even with copper peptide applied topically in high amounts, it’s not very easy to get it to penetrate." What do you think? University of Miami Meets Matt and the Obama Mamas

On Sunday Matt Damon vowed to give his all to Obama in the last days before the election, and he kept true to his word, stopping by the campaign headquarters in Hollywood, FL and then over to the University of Miami yesterday. The crowd, including Luciana and newborn Gia, looked more than happy to see Matt's big grin and he was kind enough to pose for photo ops - some with ladies sporting their expecting bellies. Matt isn't the only celebrity spending time down south - Elisabeth Hasselbeck is busy campaigning for Palin and the "sexist" wardrobe issue. These two are just a few of the many celebrities to endorse a candidate, but we'll have to wait until next week to see whose hard work pays off.

Obesity and Decline in Savings Could be Connected

Australia has taken over as the most obese country, but the US isn't far behind and we have dwindling savings accounts to go along with our gluttonous reputation. Slate writer Rob Cyran asks whether the two are related and brings up some interesting points to support his hypothesis.

From 1980 to 2003, obesity rates rose remarkably, consumption as a percentage of the country's gross domestic product rose, and the U.S. savings rate plummeted.
According to economists from the University of Miami, obesity took off when women started earning more and restaurant portion sizes grew. Families started eating out more often as women spent more hours away from home and restaurants increased portions to stay competitive.
Researchers from New York University claim the number of new products introduced in restaurants bragging of huge portions increased sevenfold during the '80s and '90s.

Vertebrobasilar circulatory disorders are disorders in which blood supply to the back of the brain is disrupted.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

The vertebrobasilar system is also called the posterior (back) circulation of the brain. There are 3 main blood vessels that provide circulation to the back of the brain -- 2 vertebral arteries and 1 basilar artery.

The back of the brain contains structures that are crucial for sustaining life. For instance, the brainstem controls breathing, swallowing, and the level of consciousness. Other structures of the back of the brain are the occipital lobes (the vision areas of the brain) and the cerebellum (movement coordination).

Blood flow in the posterior circulation of the brain may be disrupted by many different conditions. The most common cause is a stroke caused by hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis).

Atherosclerosis occurs when fat accumulates in a blood vessel wall, causing local inflammation (irritation and swelling). The areas of inflammation are called plaques, and they may break off and cause blood clots inside the vessel.

These clots may then travel inside the arteries and get stuck in the brain, blocking the blood supply to the area normally fed by the artery. This sudden stopping of blood supply causes rapid malfunction and even death of the affected brain cells, which are very sensitive to lack of circulation. This is what happens when a person suffers a certain type of stroke.

Vertebrobasilar vascular disorders may also be caused by dissection, which is a tear of the artery wall. This involves bleeding through the artery wall and sometimes the release of a clot, which then blocks blood flow.

Dissection can be caused by plaques, other diseases of the arteries (such as fibromuscular dysplasia), or by trauma (such as a car accident). It may even be caused by manipulations of the neck by a chiropractor, or during massage. However, most of the time, no apparent cause of dissection can be identified.

Other less common causes of vertebrobasilar vascular disorders include connective tissue diseases and vasculitis.

Symptoms

Loss of vision, particularly affecting same part of the visual field on both eyes
Double vision
Vertigo (sensation of things spinning around)
Numbness or tingling
Nausea and vomiting
Difficulty swallowing
Problems with balance
Poor coordination
Headache
Neck ache
Loss of hearing
Slurred speech

Signs and tests

Tests will be ordered based on what the underlying cause is likely to be. These may include:

Imaging of the brain, especially CT scans and MRI
Imaging of the blood vessels including MRI angiography (MRA) or ultrasound
Computed tomography angiography (CTA), another type of blood vessel imaging
Imaging of the heart (echocardiogram)
Conventional angiogram (x-rays of the arteries using injected dye)
Lumbar puncture (spinal tap) -- rarely needed
Blood tests
Electrocardiogram (ECG) and Holter monitor (a prolonged ECG to look for abnormal heart rhythms)
X-rays
Transcranial Doppler (ultrasound of the blood vessels of the skull)

Occasionally, special coagulation (blood clotting) tests are requested when the diagnosis is unclear, to see if the patient has an abnormal tendency to form clots.

Treatment

Treatment can be divided into emergency treatment, and the prevention of recurrences. It is critical to seek medical attention as fast as possible. A stroke is a brain attack and this type of stroke is one in which rapid medical attention can be the difference between life and death, or between mild and severe disability.

When the patient arrives at the hospital within 3 hours after the onset of symptoms, the use of a medication called t-PA may be considered. This medication, known as a clot-buster, is given intravenously (injected into the veins), and has been shown to improve the chances of a meaningful recovery.

Unfortunately, t-PA is a potentially dangerous drug because it can cause bleeding in the brain. Since it can be hard to tell whether a stroke has been caused by a clot or by bleeding, and since giving this medication in the case of a stroke caused by bleeding could be fatal, careful evaluation must be done. Physicians must order several tests and do careful physical examinations to make sure that t-PA is the right treatment.

In some cases, physicians may deliver the clot-buster using a small catheter inserted through the skin, which is then advanced to the blocked area of the brain circulation with the aid of x-ray angiography.

This may be tried when the patient arrives too late for the 3-hour window required for the intravenous t-PA. It is unclear at this time, however, if this is better than using other treatments.

The prevention of new strokes depends on the underlying cause. It is always critically important that blood pressure, heart conditions, blood sugar, and cholesterol problems are all addressed.

When plaques have caused a stroke, blood thinners that block the function of some sticky cells of the blood (the platelets) may be used. The most important of these drugs is aspirin. Anti-coagulation drugs, such as heparin and warfarin, can also be used.

However, some other drugs of similar effectiveness are available, like clopidogrel, ticlopidine, and dipyridamole. One recent European study showed that the combination of 2 of these anti-platelet drugs (aspirin and dipyridamole) is better than either drug alone to prevent first or recurring strokes.

If a dissection is found, it may be left to disappear on its own, or it may be treated with aspirin or warfarin for 3-6 months.

If there is a significant blockage of a blood vessel, an angioplasty may open up the artery with a balloon, and a stent can be used to keep it open. However, stents are not universally available and contrarily, their placement may cause a stroke.

If blood vessel problems exist as a result of another illness (such as vasculitis), steroids or other immune-suppressing drugs may be used.

Expectations (prognosis)

The outlook depends in part on the underlying cause. Strokes of the brainstem region are potentially life-threatening, and require urgent medical care. The most important factors in determining the outlook for recovery are age, and associated medical problems.

When patients are young and have no significant medical problems, a substantial recovery can be expected.

Recovery also depends on the area of the brain that has been affected. The prognosis is very poor when the patient is in a coma or cannot move both arms and legs.

Complications

Complications of vertebrobasilar circulatory disorders are stroke and its complications. The complications of stroke include:

Respiratory (breathing) failure (which may require use of a machine to help the patient breathe)
Lung problems (especially lung infections)
Heart attack
Dehydration and swallowing problems (sometimes leading to the placement of tubes in the stomach for artificial feeding)
Problems with movement or sensation, including paralysis and numbness
Formation of clots in the legs

Patients may have visual loss in one eye.

Complications caused by medications or surgery may also occur.

Call 911 or your local emergency number, or get to the emergency room if you have any symptoms that may suggest a vertebrobasilar circulatory disorder. Remember the motto of the stroke doctor -- "Time is brain."

Prevention

General prevention of strokes caused commonly by atherosclerosis includes cessation of smoking, regular exercise, blood pressure control, healthy diet, and management of diabetes. Prevention of dissection includes avoidance of neck manipulation, and prevention of trauma to the neck.

From Factory Town to Forgotten: Top 10 US Cities in Decline

Ohio and Michigan may be key battleground states this election perhaps because they have the most to gain. In the list of fastest dying American cities, Ohio scored four slots and Michigan took two - it appears in these declining Rust Belt towns, there's nowhere to go but up.

What factors peg a town as "dying?" Dwindling populations, higher than average unemployment, and stagnant economies all combine to signal bad news for a city. The automotive industry has had the biggest impact on the trend, where the Michigan cities of Flint and Detroit (pictured) have seen unemployment approach 10 percent.

Though the cities on the list aren't facing the crushing real estate landscape that Miami, Las Vegas and Phoenix are seeing, it's hardly good news - the prices never climbed there to begin with. The one bright spot is that a survey shows that almost every city's economy in the US grew between 2001 and 2005; those making the list just grew at a much more depressed rate, some well below 1 percent. Here's the list:

Flint, MI - GM was founded here, and the city has suffered the auto decline even harder than Detroit.
