Love It or Hate It? Helena Bonham Carter's Deconstructed Updo

Here's Helena Bonham Carter at the London premiere of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. She's sporting a deconstructed updo, with ribbons intermixed with her wild curls. I don't think everyone could pull off this unconventional look, but I think it fits Helena's quirky personality well (and it makes me think of Hamlet's Ophelia). What's your opinion?

Fab Ad: Derek Lam, Spring '10

Derek Lam likes to keep his friends close and his models closer. After seeing Ginta Lapina on his arm at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards last week, we found the model posing in Lam's new Spring campaign. "We went back to the beach, but it’s a dreamy world of cream-colored sand, highlighted by pops of color from vibrant clothing and accessories," said Creative Director Doug Lloyd.

The ad, shot by Solve Sundsbo at Pier 59 Studio in New York, showcases Ginta looking quirky cute in Lam's polka-dot confections. I love the punchy accessories, and Ginta's updo and red lips are a fun contrast to the beachy backdrop. Side note, what's up with the luring ominous shadow?

Trend Alert: Faking a Shorter Style

Faking a shorter haircut by means of skillfully placed hair pins is nothing new. In fact, we saw Rosario Dawson do her own faux-crop late last year, followed by Nicole Kidman's asymmetric version. In recent times, the look has taken on resurgence in popularity, as celebrities have been tricking us out with their own adaptations, giving the appearance of freshly cut locks. Kate Beckinsale's full-in-the-front updo gave the illusion of an angled wedge at the Whiteout premiere; both Jennifer Lopez and Elizabeth Banks opted for wavy, tousled styles; and Kristen Stewart faked us out at the VMAs with her memorable faux bowl cut. It's a great look for the changing season, and for those of us who don't want to sacrifice length. (Learn to do it here.) What do you think of these mock styles?

Over the past few years, Toni Braxton's hair has gotten both longer and a lot lighter. Here, she's tossed her caramel-toned locks into a loose updo, letting her flawless skin shine through. 2009 American Music Awards: Alicia Keys

Alicia Keys never fails to look gorgeous on the red carpet, but she's also not afraid of strong choices, either. Tonight, she went decidedly retro (peep those earrings!) with blue eye shadow and a complex, old-fashioned updo that looked like it could very well have been worn by Lena Horne or one of the Andrews sisters. What do you think? Was this a pretty blast from the past or a look that stayed in the '40s for a reason?

2009 American Music Awards: Nicole Kidman

It's a rockin' night, and Nicole Kidman is dressed for it. She arrived on the arm of her crooner husband, Keith Urban, wearing her hair very differently than what we're used to seeing. Instead of an elegant updo or worn long and center-parted, tonight she let her hair cover half her face, a la Veronica Lake. Do you think the style worked as well on Nicole as it did on Veronica, or do you wish she hadn't gone for a remake?

How-To: Kristen Bell's Braided Updo

Kristen Bell's red carpet appearances are almost always practically flawless, and at last night's premiere of Couples Retreat in LA, the actress dazzled once again. This time, it was her loose and wavy braided updo that had heads turning. To copy the look at home, you'll need just a few basic items and a little creativity:

Part your hair to the side and section off the front of your hair from the back. A good guideline is to create a part from ear to ear.

Next, pull the back section into a loose ponytail. Braid, using the four-strand method. Secure with an elastic band and twist the braid up toward the occipital bone. Secure with bobby pins.

Twist small sections of hair from the front into the back of the updo. Weave some of the strands together for a wavy effect. To create a seamless look, hide the pins behind the braid.

To finish off the look, curl face-framing strands, and softly pull back away from the face. Spritz on a volumizing spray for lift, like Nexxus 360 Volume Volumizing Design and Finishing Mist ($11.50).

Trend Alert: Umbrellas and Updo's at The BAFTAs

All of the nominees who chose to walk tonight's BAFTA Awards red carpet wearing their hair up came out on top. About halfway through the glamorous coverage, the skies opened up and the rains came pouring down. Luckily, umbrellas and willing assisants were there to shield the dresses, tuxedo's and all of the hard work of makeup artists and hair dressers. I loved the extravagance of Penelope Cruz, the relaxed undone plaits on Emma Watson and the traditional elegance of Amy Adams the most. Out of these eight looks, which updo is your favourite?

How to Have Hair Like a Princess Bride

Over the Memorial Day weekend, Prince Joachim wed Miss Marie Cavallier in a white wedding in Copenhagen, Denmark. The princess bride wore her hair off of her face and neck in a delicate updo. Her curled and pinned hair extensions were secured in the back, and the look was topped off with an elaborate tiara.

While the bride looks relaxed and radiant, this hairdo is actually quite complicated to pull off all by yourself. If you are interested in creating this style on your wedding day, you may want to ask for some assistance from a trusted pal or bridesmaid.

Step 1: Begin with hair that has been washed the night before so that it has just a little bit of oil in it. Mist hair lightly with water and apply a little bit of mousse or styling gel all over. Brush to distribute it evenly, then blow dry your hair back and away from your face until it's dry. Next, brush hair back and part it gently. Then, secure hair with an elastic into a ponytail.

Step 2: This is the part where you'll likely need assistance. Add a large extension piece just above your ponytail (I suggest one that is attached to a hair comb) and secure the comb with bobby pins. Have your helper section off the extensions into four pieces of equal thickness. You'll also need to separate your ponytail into one or two sections, depending on how long and thick your hair is.
Step 3: You'll want to create two loops out of each section of hair. Grab one of the sections and create a loop only going about midway down the hair shaft. Pin hair and make a loop with the remaining half, and pin that one too. Repeat with each section until complete.
Step 4: Make sure that no pins are visible. If they are, adjust them accordingly. Spray a generous amount of firm-hold hairspray all over your hair. Lastly, gently place your tiara on your head and secure with bobby pins if necessary.

Trend Alert: Up Up And-A-Wave At The 2009 SAG Awards

Last night at the 2009 Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles, the red carpet was filled with celebrities from television and film. In true Hollywood tradition, all of the women arrived dressed to the nines in ball-gowns and baubles from big name designers and everyone's hair and makeup was flawless.

Some of my favourite beauties were January Jones who looked slightly 70's with her loose waves and gold eye shadow, and Freida Pinto whose soft, smoky makeup enhanced her creamy caramel skin. I also noticed that most hairstyles had body as opposed to looking stick straight. In particular, the elegant and timeless wavy updo reigned supreme. Out of these eight elaborate looks, whose do you like the most?
