I don't foresee myself walking down the aisle anytime soon, but that won't stop me from peeping at the latest bridal fashions from Jenny Packham, Vera Wang, Reem Acra, Monique Lhuillier, and Temperley London. For Fall '10, the designers supplied us with an abundance of fabulous, frothy layers of tulles, taffeta, lace, and ruffles. However, what really caught my eye were a surprising selection of fancy short frocks and even black dresses – who dares? Check out the bountiful best from Fall '10 Bridal Fashion Week!

Vera Wang Spring 2009 Bridal Collection

Vera Wang's 2009 Spring bridal collection called for an avant-garde approach to wedding gowns. Vera Wang stated, "We want to modernize the wedding vocabulary. It's something we struggle with every season."

Her experimentation of different silhouettes and textures rendered a fresh take on wedding dresses showcasing strategically placed bows, floral trains, and asymmetrical necklines - I think it's safe to say that no one missed the baubles and beads.

Fab Flash: Economy Forces Bridal Designers to Think Bigger and Cheaper

During trying, economic times, bridal designers are forced to think creatively. On top of slashing prices, designers are cooking up new, imaginative designs to lure in the bride to be. Vera Wang, for example, reduced her price points up to 50 percent with gowns retailing at $3,600 compared to $5,500 last year. "There is a bigger challenge. You have to be creative and be sure you want to show something special,” said Carolina Herrera who came up with a unique bridal collection inspired by classic painters such as Claude Monet and Édouard Manet.

J.Crew is offering its once online exclusive bridal collection in select stores.
Alfred Angelo, a 75-year-old bridal label, launched a Recessionista collection with prices starting at $298.
To play up brides’ unique personalities, Junko Yoshioka teamed up with astrologist Susan Miller to create a collection inspired by the various astrological signs.
Monique Lhuillier designed a new bridesmaid line retailing between $250 and $390.

The Challenges for Vera & Her Kohl's Collaboration

Not too long ago we flashed the news about Vera Wang's collection for Wisconsin-based department store Kohl's - a far cry from the designer's concrete jungle of NYC. A recent article in the NY Times revealed some interesting challenges the queen of bridal couture is facing with her midmarket retail endeavor.

The most obvious concern with creating mass market collections is that it undermines their prestige amongst affluent customers. They cited Halston as the classic example, who was dropped by luxury retailers after signing a deal for a line at J.C. Penney (remember them?!). However, times have changed and after cheaper lines at H&M for Karl Lagerfeld and Stella McCartney, to name a couple, I don't think Chanel or Stella's reputations have suffered. Then again, I am not (yet) an affluent customer. Vera feels this risk was outweighed by the resources and business expertise Kohl's brings to the table.

The other challenge was that Vera simply needs mo' money. She has reached a crossroads after her business rapidly grew and she lacks the resources, ie. cash, to keep expanding. A lesser known fact is that designers need a lot of funding to keep afloat. Wang puts it, "We need a lot more to play in the sandbox, so to speak." She reached out to Kohl's in an effort to keep her business bountiful.

Lastly, perfectionism has a price when exploring new territory. Wang had a hard time adjusting to the requirement of producing fewer styles in greater quantities. No more chucking extravagant fabric that isn't perfect to the curb Vera! The good news is compromise was achieved and a gold brocade skirt that is a $68 replica of a $890 one from her Fall collection made the cut. Yay!

Sorry for the long update but I thought all of this was very interesting since we're in the midst of a high-low fashion revolution. Look out for Simply Vera at Kohl's stores in September.

The latest and greatest is her Luxe Bow Super Pillow Top Bed which stays cooler when you sleep, thanks to Kool Comfort memory foam, and has 880 inner coils as opposed to the average 670 coils. This line is available in seven different sizes and variations exclusively at Fortunoff.

What's the price tag? You have to call for that and availability, what's your guess?

The joining of luxury beds and a luxury designer is a great match. We can't wait to see what Vera has up her bustle for us next!

Vera Wang has expanded her wedding empire to go online. Set to launch next month, VeraWangonWeddings.com will offer a full interactive wedding planning experience to couples. The site will showcase her signature bridal gowns, product galleries, and Faboo video segments of Wang herself offering wedding tips and advice. The wedding guru is also set to launch her first collection of fine linens to be sold exclusively on the site. My favorite is the interactive quiz you can take to determine his and her tastes to Vera's products - how fun!

Wedding Trend Alert: Bows, Fabulous Bows

Bridal designers are adorning wedding dresses with bows, fabulous bows as a feminine alternative to crystals and ruffles this season. They evoke a fun and whimsical look - see on the runway of Monique Lhuillier left - and are being used as a focal point, embellishment, or scattered across gowns for a more carefree look. This is a beautiful and more casual way to adorn a wedding gown. Me likey.
