Fab's Guide to Finding the Perfect Dress to Say "I Do" In

Hello, bride-to-be. I'm Fab, your personal wedding dress shopper! Whether you have three months or twelve to shop for your dream dress, here is a guide to help you look your most beautiful, and keep your sanity. You be the bride and I'll be your guide . . .

First things first: determine your wedding style and budget. Close your eyes and try to picture your big day. Is the ceremony ethereal outside on a beach? Or more formal inside a formal church? Or is it something in between? You'll want a wedding gown that fits your picture. Choose something light and airy if you'll be beachside and something more lavish if you'll be in a church. If you're going the church route, remember to cover up with a shawl or bolero as you want to respect the dress code of the establishment. The most important thing is to set a budget so you don't go ga ga over a dress that's out of your price range!

Remember that the season could determine the style of your dress, but it doesn't have to. It's your wedding, so you make the rules. If you're in love with an open-back dress for your Winter wedding, you can always pair it with a shawl for warmth. If your wedding is in the Summer but you love a long-sleeve lace gown, go for it (just wear lots of deodorant!)
Once you've decided on your ceremony style and budget, you'll need inspiration. Go out and buy all of the weddings magazines on the stand and start ripping away. Create a wedding dress file - I suggest something special like this Peppercot Accordion File Tote ($24). This file will also come in handy later in life, I promise.
There is an insane amount of dress styles to choose from (classic, retro, modern, color, etc) but my favorite trends now are bows, embellishments, and short lengths. I will show you more of these dress styles in depth later, but for starters here are the the options I'd explore were it my wedding.

While you are gathering your gown file, ask your wedding planner or married friends for suggestions of dress salons near you. Also peruse online wedding sites like Wedding Channel and Brides. Brides has a handy dandy glossary you'll appreciate. The most important thing to remember is timing. Special-order gowns can take three to six months to create, and alterations can take weeks, so plan accordingly.
Now that it's time to go gown shopping, it's important to dress appropriately. You want to wear loose fitting clothes that are easy to get in and out of - but don't dress like a slob. It's also good to have your hair either pulled back or down, depending on how you'll have it on the actual day. Bring comfortable shoes with the heel height you plan to wearing. Throw a strapless bra into your purse and try to wear pretty underthings - you will be standing around in them in front of your shopping buddies and salesperson.
Once you are assigned a salesperson, go through your tear sheets with them and point out what you like about dresses and special details you love. When you try on dresses, continue to point out your likes and dislikes.
Keep an eye out for quality. In a high-quality gown every detail should have a perfect finish - no bead or string should be unraveled. Natural fabrics like silk are pricier than synthetics, but the benefits are they let your skin breathe and don't trap sweat. A-line gowns fall smoothly and prevent panty lines; this is also the best shape for fuller figures. If you do have budget constraints, skip beading and fancy details and focus on a fine fabric and a good fit - you can always dress yourself up with jewelry and beauty!
The finishing touches. Take into account the following elements surrounding your look: alterations, headpiece/veil, lingerie, jewelry, shoes, bag, a cover up, and the groom's ensemble. Oh, and the bridesmaids. Lastly, two weeks before your wedding, have a final dress fitting with your accessories and lingerie, and break in your shoes by wearing them at home. Vera Wang's 2009 Spring bridal collection called for an avant-garde approach to wedding gowns. Vera Wang stated, "We want to modernize the wedding vocabulary. It's something we struggle with every season."

Her experimentation of different silhouettes and textures rendered a fresh take on wedding dresses showcasing strategically placed bows, floral trains, and asymmetrical necklines - I think it's safe to say that no one missed the baubles and beads.

Vera Wang has expanded her wedding empire to go online. Set to launch next month, VeraWangonWeddings.com will offer a full interactive wedding planning experience to couples. The site will showcase her signature bridal gowns, product galleries, and Faboo video segments of Wang herself offering wedding tips and advice. The wedding guru is also set to launch her first collection of fine linens to be sold exclusively on the site. My favorite is the interactive quiz you can take to determine his and her tastes to Vera's products - how fun!

They evoke a fun and whimsical look - see on the runway of Monique Lhuillier left - and are being used as a focal point, embellishment, or scattered across gowns for a more carefree look. This is a beautiful and more casual way to adorn a wedding gown. Me likey.

Kate Hudson's Winter Wedding Perfection!

Yes it's the middle of July and there is a heat wave sweeping the nation, but if you happen to be having a winter wedding, I bet you are deep in to the planning stages by now.

In the spirit of this, I thought we could take a look at the gorgeous winter wedding of Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson in Aspen, Colorado. Not only did Kate Hudson prove to be practical (long coat for the cold weather) but she also styled her gorgeous, strapless, ivory, silk duchesse satin dress Vera Wang dress to resemble the designs of the 19th century. Her couture had the finishing touches of a hand-stitched corset bodice. I believe the floor length fur coat was Vera Wang also.

Unfortunately, this is the only photo that has been released and you can not see her gown in it.

Fun Facts:

Kate and Chris wed on December 31, 2000 (New Year's Eve). The wedding took place in Aspen and the ceremony was held under a tent at her parent's home. They had 70 guests.
The reception was held at the Elk Mountain Lodge.
The theme of their wedding was winter white with tons of white only flowers and white candles.
Her bachelorette party was held 2 nights before at Caribou's Whiskey Bar in Aspen.
Chris gave Kate a 5-carat Asscher-cut diamond ring.
They met at a party in NY and 4 days later they moved in together....6 months later they married.
Chris wore a dark gray Brioni suit.

Would You Buy a Worn Wedding Dress on eBay?

What if I told you that you could get that $2,000 wedding dress of your dreams for a fraction of the price? Naturally, its been worn once on someone else's most special day and it's coming to you via eBay?

Before you cringe, it should be noted that there is a plethora of gently worn wedding dresses on eBay, including ones designed by Vera Wang and Monique Lhuillier, and think about this: When you buy vintage, those pieces have usually been worn over and over and over again, and you still jump at them, whereas a wedding dress has been worn (hopefully) just once. When you consider how overpriced gowns are - because brides will pay the prices - isn't it kind of a blow to the heart of the wedding industry?

Truthfully, I don't know what I'd do, but I have to say: I'd be awfully tempted if I found the perfect dress for half the price on eBay. How do you feel about it? Leave your answer below and be sure to see more wedding coverage on I Do Sugar!

Jennifer Aniston's Getting a New Job and a New Husband?!

It was only a matter of time before the wedding rumors started for Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer. While he recently opened up and started talking about his girlfriend at his concerts, we're not so sure this hot couple will actually be walking down the aisle anytime soon. OK! Magazine seems to differ, and apparently has all the details. This weekend's issue dishes on her Vera Wang gown, their Greek honeymoon, and of course, the matron of honor Courteney Cox. It all sounds so amazing, and we'd love to see the pictures of this amazing event. But to be more realistic, we'll get excited about the fact that Jen is holding a script from CAA, so hopefully her agents have found her a great job and we'll see her back at work soon.

Avril & Deryck Are Married!

Congrats to the happy couple who got married yesterday afternoon in Montecito. Seems like the punk pop star went for the traditional vibe when it came to her big wedding day. She wore Vera Wang (one for the ceremony and one for the reception), walked down the aisle with her father and had rose petals thrown at them after their 20 minute ceremony. People reports:

At the outdoor, non-denominational ceremony, Lavigne was walked down the aisle by her father, John, to Mendelssohn's "Wedding March." She wore a Vera Wang gown and carried a bouquet of white roses.

The couple said their vows under an awning decorated with white flowers in front of 110 guests, including family and friends from their native Ontario.

Once the groom had kissed the bride, guests tossed rose petals at the newlyweds as they walked back up the aisle.

After the wedding, guests were to be treated to an outdoor cocktail hour before the reception, including a sit-down dinner, under a tent on the estate. In contrast to the all-white ceremony, the reception will have a red theme, with centerpieces of red roses and other flowers.

The couple's first dance is expected to be to the Goo Goo Dolls' "Iris."

Fab Flash: Vera Wang to Guest Star on "Ugly Betty"

In the upcoming season of "Ugly Betty," don't be surprised if you see Vera Wang's face pop up! The designer best known for her wedding gowns was spotted in Los Angeles last week, taping a segment of the show about what else but the upcoming wedding of one of the "Betty" characters. Vera wears her trademark leggings and reportedly plays a nastier version of herself. Sounds like good entertainment!
