Just Released: Three Fitness Video Games For the Wii

Confession: I love playing video games - I especially love them on the Wii because I get to move, jump, and shake myself into a tizzy. Three fitness games were released for the Wii this last week and even though it's not like doing the real deal outside, the games are a fun way to burn calories and whip your bod into shape.

Nintendo Wii Fit Plus ($20) Wii Fit Plus is Nintendo's follow-up to the popular Wii Fit. There are new exercises, balance board games, and strength and yoga activities, as well as targeted exercise routines for things like reducing tummy fat and toning your figure. A great improvement is the addition of a calorie counter - after you complete each exercise the game tells you how many calories you've burned.

Are You Surprised Wii Sports Is the Best-Selling Video Game?

Software company VGChartz says that Wii Sports is the world's best-selling video game, which has raised more than a few eyebrows. I certainly credit the game for being a great introduction to the Wii itself (there's a reason that it comes with the console), and to selling people on the Wii and casual gaming in general.

Best-selling is certainly different than saying it's the best (you said the best for 2008 was the Wii Fit), and I also wonder if the fact that the sales of the Wii are so good that Wii Sports is getting the props because it's included. In any case, it has surpassed Super Mario Bros. in sales, which could not have been an easy feat.

So tell me, all things considered, are you surprised that the world's best-selling video game is Wii Sports?

Wii, The First Fit Video Game?

I am so excited to welcome geek to the Sugar team! And while, she and I may not always see eye to eye on the benefit of video games, the Nintendo's Wii ($250) is one video game that I actually think is totally great too.

Wii is quite possibly one of the first "Fit approved" video games because instead of sitting sedentary on your couch eating chips, Wii players actually get up and move... a lot.

Hot Holiday Item to Pre-Order: New SMB For the Wii

I'm not gonna lie, after getting a sneak peek of New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii back in June at E3, I've been secretly counting down the days until I can pop this game into my shiny white console.

In less than five days (this Sunday!) SMB for the Wii ($50) will be released across the country, and I can tell you this much - it's going to be on many wish lists this holiday season - heck, it's already getting rave reviews.

There's no denying that Super Mario Bros. games have staying power - SMB3 did win our best video game ever bracket challenge! And with this game you can experience multiplayer fun (Mario, Luigi and two toads are playable characters), use the new propeller suit, and shake and tilt your wiimote to do fun things like tilt seesaws and transform Mario into a penguin.

May is yet another month packed full of movie-to-game titles that I hope (fingers crossed) will be as awesome as the films are. I've been putting in mega OT with Mario Kart and GTA IV, and I hope to add a few more to my schedule this week to give you more in depth reviews so that you can make an informed decision on which ones are worth dropping some cash on! Can you smell that? Not only is Spring in the air, but I'm getting a slight whiff of Super Smash Bros Brawl! Release day is finally drawing near, and although it's not the only game that I'm looking forward to, it's definitely at the top of my "must buy" list this month. Bonus for me, my local Gamestop is hosting an in-store Brawl showdown (with some pretty sweet prizes), to help count down the minutes until midnight when we can take our own copies home!

Wii Music: Don't Call It Rock Band

After I got my party on with Raving Rabbids and had my fill with the Personal Trainer Chef Edition, it was time to rock out with the Wii!

Wii Music (coming out Oct. 20), is Nintendo's answer to Rock Band, but is only similar to it in the sense that you're standing-up and interactively making music. Elements of competition are removed, and replaced with the ability and encouragement to play songs any way you want.

Using the Wiimote and Nunchuk controls, you can choose among a ton of instruments like piano, violin, guitar and the cat and dog (you read that correctly), and then play with your friends to make stylized versions of classic songs. The music is a bit more midi-sounding than Rock Band or Guitar Hero, the avatars just Miis, and all the songs super family-friendly, which makes Wii Music a really great option if you want to expose kids to a music game, but aren't that comfortable with the graphics and songs that the other games provide.

With visions of Hungry Lumas still dancing in my head and some seriously calloused fingers from shredding it up Guitar Hero style, I would have to say that this has been a satisfying year for gaming indeed. Now that game releases are slowing down to a crawl for the holiday season, there are a few good choices left and a slew of movie-to-game titles if you are looking to pick up something for yourself or trying to cram for last minute gift ideas.
