Coming Soon: Twilight, the Restaurant

Considering that everyone - Sugar included! - is getting caught up in the hype surrounding the Twilight series, it comes as no surprise that one couple, Annette and Tim Root of Forks, WA, have decided to launch a Twilight-themed restaurant in the town where the books are set.

Although the family-style eatery will be named Volterra, after the Italian city where the Volturi law-enforcing vampires live, the cuisine won't be Italian. Instead it will serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a focus on steak and seafood. The couple hopes to debut their themed restaurant, complete with bar area, early next Spring.

Since I enjoyed the first two books and found the movie hysterically entertaining, I think the idea of a restaurant sounds fun. How about you? Would you be interested in eating at a Twilight establishment?

Teacher Has Sex With 18-Year-Old Pupil - Should It Be Illegal?

A high school teacher accused of having sex with a senior at his school has been cleared of any illegal wrongdoing. This week a Washington state appeals court dismissed the case brought against the 33-year-old choir teacher, ruling that state law does not ban teachers from having sex with 18-year-old students.

While the ick factor suggests that an 18-year-old having consensual sex is different when the partner is a school teacher, should there be a legal difference? Would you like to see this choir teacher face criminal charges?

Paper or Cash? Supermarket Bagger Returns Lost $10,000

Moses, a supermarket bagger, says the bible inspired him to return $10,000 in cash he found in his store's bathroom. Moses explained: "I teach at Sunday school with 10-year-old kids and I always tell them to do the right thing."

CNN deemed Moses' action so unusually generous that it sent a reporter to the store to discuss his decision making process. But perhaps choosing to return the money isn't so surprising. Despite the lure of free money, $10,000 on a bathroom floor seems a little fishy. Maybe Moses didn't want to get mixed up in any trouble, since someone would probably come looking for the cash.

States, Provinces to Cap and Trade Sans Federal Governments

Seven western US states and four Canadian provinces have agreed to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by 15 percent before 2020. Proud of the Western Climate Initiative, Republican California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger asserted:

We’re sending a strong message to our federal governments that states and provinces are moving forward in the absence of federal action, and we’re setting the stage for national programs that are just as aggressive.

So how will Arizona, California, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and the Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec curb climate change? To find out, read more.

The states and provinces will set a mandatory cap on greenhouse gas beginning in 2012. The cap will get smaller every year. All sectors of the economies, from transportation to housing to electricity, will be expected to cut and pay for emissions. Industries, however, will receive allowances for their emissions. One allowance will cover every metric ton of emitted heat-trapping gas, and allowances can be traded on a secondary market.

Out and About: Washington's Freestyle Dancers...

With dogs! Yup, dancing with your pooch along to music is not only a fun pastime, but also a sport in its own right. The point of canine musical freestyle is to showcase the dog and handler in a creative, innovative, and original dance emphasizing their teamwork, artistry, and athleticism. On Nov. 9 and 10, the World Canine Freestyle Organization will hold the 2007 WCFO North American Nationals at the Red Lion Hotel Seattle South. Seats are limited, but try to see if you can get in to watch these amazing dogs (and their equally amazing owners) interpret music and display the unique bond between people and their animals. This is a great way to spend time with a pooch . . . while working on obedience at the same time. If you're interested in getting in on the action, look for a local club to get started - there are groups across the country and around the world!

Out and About: Washington's Ferries

Taking a trip on a bus or streetcar in Seattle with your pooch is super easy as lap dogs ride free and large, leashed pups are welcome at your feet for a fee! Did you know that Washington State's ferry system is the largest in the nation? With boats traveling to several outlying islands (my favorites are the San Juans), this is a great adventure to take with your pets. The boat rules are fairly straightforward:

If the ferry has outside stairwells, pooches are allowed on the car deck and on the outdoor decks above the car deck.
If the ferry has indoor stairwells, dogs are only allowed on the deck where they boarded the ferry. So, if you drive on board, pup must remain on the car deck and, if you walk onto the boat, your dog is welcome on the outside deck where you boarded, not the other decks.
And, best yet, pooches ride free!

Out and About: Washington's Magnuson Park

Welcome to Week Three of PetSugar's Out and About travel feature! There are so many amazing dog parks in the Seattle area, that it seemed appropriate to highlight one of my favorites to start off our week in Washington. Located along the shores of Lake Washington, Warren G. Magnuson Dog Park is part of Seattle's second-largest park (totaling 350 acres). This is the best spot for water babies – and the only off-leash area in Seattle where pooches have beach access (they're not allowed on beaches elsewhere within city limits). For dogs who haven't quite mastered "down" and "off," the compact gravel on the footpath makes it possible to leave here (relatively) cleaner than visits to parks with solid dirt trails. Well, until the pups discover the water that is.

Which Marchesa Was Most Fab at the Music Unites Fall Masquerade Gala?

Last week at the Music Unites Fall Masquerade Gala, Kerry Washington and Georgina Chapman wore pretty, poufy frocks from Georgina's coveted Marchesa line. Both dresses were white, but notice how the two styles varied in texture. Kerry's tulle embellishment and streamlined shape gave a more architectural appeal, while Georgina's feathered creation emoted flirty, flapper energy. Both beauties accessorized with sleek black clutches and matching pumps. This one's a toughie: do you prefer the designer or the celebrity?
