On Saturday at an event in California, singer Melanie Brown walked the red carpet wearing her signature smoky eyes and nude lips, however, her hair, was stick straight. Usually, we see Mel with wavy or au natural curly hair out and about town, but for dressing up, I happen to think this look is sophisticated and flattering. How To: Perfect Waves

While next spring is looking to be all about slicked-back 20's hair, low ponytails and oversize braids if London Fashion Week is anything to go by, this season is about laid back waves and textured hair styles. Whether you prefer it disheveled or perfectly groomed; wavy hair is back on our radar.

At Preen's autumn/winter show the girls had gloriously unkempt hair, while at Tommy Hilfiger and DKNY, (pictured), waves were ultra groomed and pristine, as though the models were 40's glamour girls. For an easy over night trick for wavy hair, just make like a model and use plaits. Alternatively, here's how to create the perfect waves. To find out how to re-create this look at home, read more.

For unkempt waves, spritz hair with a style spray, such as L'Oreal Techni.Art Hot Style Constructor, (£10.50), to protect your locks and add volume.
Next take large sections of the hair and wrap around the barrel of a pair of tongs. Try Daniel Hersheson, (£85). Hold the tongs away from the scalp for volume.
For the look on the runways at Preen, don't tong the ends to make for a slightly messy vibe.
For groomed waves, wrap the hair around a small barrel brush and allow it to cook with a hairdryer. Alternatively use heated rollers so you can be extra precise about making the waves even.

Last night at the London Film Festival, actress Amanda Seyfreid arrived on the red carpet with straight hair, (albeit with tonnes of body) for the UK Premiere of her latest film Chloe. Earlier in the day, she was spotted with co-star Julianne Moore with casual looking wavy hair. And just last month at the Toronto Film Festival, she promoted her flick with beautifully constructed retro-curls. Victoria Beckham stepped out in LA yesterday with her sons to treat them to some frozen yoghurt (yum). Whilst still rocking her new wavy hairstyle, Victoria also seems to be debuting a slightly more relaxed style teaming a loose tee with panel leggings.

I have seen these leggings all over the High Street recently, and they're particularly flattering in a dark shade. The panels are either in a different colour or in a different fabric like at Gareth Pugh where leather inserts add edge (£530). Urban Outfitters have a more affordable take on the look with their sequin panelled leggings (£38).

What Makes Curly Hair Curly and Straight Hair Straight?

And wavy hair wavy? Well, as you may have suspected, it does have to do with genetics, but other factors influence hair growth as well. According to Proctor and Gamble, researchers do not completely understand why some hair twists and turns and some lays flat, but here are the most commonly accepted theories. Some are a little more scientific and others more commonsense.

Shape and opening of the follicle: If you have curly hair, your follicle is probably very flat in diameter. Straight-haired people have circular follicles. As for the wavy bunch? They have oval-shaped follicles.
The number of twists per unit length: Even the straightest of hair twists as it grows. The more twists, the more curl.
Humidity in the air: Hair, which is porous by nature, easily absorbs moisture molecules in the air, making the hair curl or frizz. Enough said.
Hormones and medication: Changes to the shape of the follicle caused by hormones and medication can alter the texture of your hair and the way it grows.
The position of the hair bulb in the follicle: The bulb is located at the bottom of the hair shaft. People with really curly hair may have a hooked end towards the bottom of the shaft, meaning their hair grows at more of an angle. Straight hair means little to no hook.
The number of disulfide bonds in the hair: Simply put, the way protein structures are arranged in each hair shaft effect how hair behaves. The more disulfide bonds that occur between hair proteins, the curlier the hair and vice versa. This explains why you can temporarily alter the texture of your hair with heat and/or water - just by breaking bonds.
