High Society's Tinsley Mortimer Talks Reality, Outrageous Comments, and Bad Behavior

Did you catch last week's premiere of High Society? On the latest reality show set among the rich, Tinsley Mortimer is the girl in the center - an NYC socialite going through a public divorce with a cast of outrageous friends, enemies, and frenemies around her.

I got to chat with Tinsley about the show and upcoming episodes today - and of course, her response to the wildly offensive behavior of costars Jules Kirby and Paul Johnson Calderon.

On controversial friends Jules and PJC:
Look, nobody said that these were my best friends, obviously. There are people on the show that I'm closer with than others. Paul is somebody that I've known for years - he used to date my former husband's brother - he is like that, but he's actually really funny and he just kind of amps it up and plays it up. With or without the cameras, he's going to do those sort of things. But he just kind of likes the attention; he's just kind of playing and being kind of frivolous and careless and those things. He's a fun guy and I don't spend so much time with him all the time, but I do see him out a lot at night and he can be fun.

Jules - obviously that [Kirby's use of the N-word in the premiere] was tremendously shocking. I didn't see any of that stuff because I wasn't there when they were filming it, so to hear her comments is outrageous. And of course I've never been around her when she's ever said anything like that, but I would never tolerate that. Again, I'm friends with her through my sister, I have spent nights out with her, but I've never heard her say that. She did, in fact, say those things, and it's not accepted; it's really shocking and horrible. I think you'll see that the show doesn't tolerate her behavior either, and she will inevitably face the consequences of her behavior.

On why villainess Devorah Rose dislikes her:
Devorah came on the show and started to say a lot of things that are completely untrue. Of course that's going to cause tension and drama, and it was completely shocking to me. I was never friends with her and certainly now never will be after the things that she said. But it's difficult - to come out on television and lie about somebody . . . I really don't know why she did it, I have no idea.
On whether we'll see more of her boyfriend, Prince Casimir, and why he freaked out in the first episode:
I don't want to spoil anything, but you will see him a bit. It's crazy - it's weird to see, on a reality show, the cameras being referenced, because usually you want them to be behind the scenes, of course. And he is very uncomfortable with the cameras - when they got too close, he started to freak out. I was also completely shocked, I remember being there at the time and being so shocked by his behavior, but then watching it, I was floored. I can't even believe how he behaved, it was crazy. You will see him, you will see him a bit more.
On what viewers can look forward to this season:
My mom becomes this crazy character that says a lot of things that are upsetting to me, and you'll see a lot more of that. There's Jules, God, she's yelling at the housekeeper at the hotel where she lives with my sister - shocking. We'll see what happens with me in Paris. And certainly there's some girl fights, and some drinks getting thrown, some other crazy stuff. But it's not all about the craziness - there's other fun moments, fashion moments, and all that. It is a cutthroat world and people are always trying to get in top and it creates a lot of situations that are pretty dramatic.

Avoid These Bad Habits For Your Chompers

I know dental care isn't the most exciting topic, but healthy teeth are important and make for a lovely smile. Speaking of lovely smiles, remember the scene in Pretty Woman when Julia Roberts announces that "you shouldn't neglect your gums"? With that said, let's review some common bad dental habits that can lead to health issues like gingivitis. And since nobody likes getting that disappointing look from her dentist, make the doctor proud by avoiding these habits.

Brushing too hard or using a firm-bristled toothbrush. We all want to get that plaque off our teeth, but jamming your toothbrush back and forth with extreme intensity can permanently (as in forever) wear away the protective enamel on your teeth. It could also lead to increased tooth sensitivity and receding gums, the latter of which could require surgery. Ouch!
Brushing side to side. I was a big horizontal brusher for years, and it was hard work to break this habit, but circular motions are the best way to clean your teeth gently yet effectively.
Not brushing long enough. Two to three minutes is recommended.
Not flossing daily or ever. Sorry to say, but a toothbrush only cleans the surfaces of your teeth. Using floss is the only way to clean in between your teeth, so if you don't do it daily, plaque can form and cause cavities.
Using your teeth as tools. While your sharp incisors can help you rip open a package of trail mix, you're asking for trouble. This is a sure way to chip or crack your teeth or damage fillings.

Not using a fluoride rinse. Clinical studies show that by using both a fluoride mouthwash and a fluoride toothpaste, you can provide extra protection against tooth decay more than if you use fluoride toothpaste on its own.
Not seeing the dentist regularly. OK, so going to the dentist isn't as fun as going out for ice cream, but if you don't get your teeth cleaned and checked professionally twice a year, you're bound to end up with some serious and painful dental problems, like a root canal, that could have you sitting in the chair for hours.
Choosing white wine. While red wine can lead to staining, the acidity in white wine wears away tooth enamel.

How Bad Is That Diet Coke?

Confession: I have a handful of dirty little secrets when it comes to my health and fitness. One of them is that I harbor a serious Diet Coke addiction. I've been known to have a regular two cans on a weekday, partially for the caffeine jolt, and partially because I like the taste (I know, I know).

Recent studies have shown that even diet versions of popular sodas aren't good for you, and can lead to obesity. I've even heard them described as "chemical water with a little caffeine." I recently noticed that after drinking more than one Diet Coke during the day, I've started getting dull headaches. After one too many DC-induced headaches, I switched my second soda of the day to a caffeine-free Diet 7-Up hoping that would stop the problem, but it did just the opposite - the headaches got worse. I remembered reading about the artificial sweetener aspartame and potential side effects in the past; turns out the sweetener - better known as Nutra-Sweet - is found in most diet sodas, including Diet 7-Up. While the FDA's acceptable intake of aspartame is the amount found in about four cans of soda (yikes!), a sensitivity to the sweetener can cause other side effects: headaches, dizziness, mood changes, and even skin reactions. In addition, soda consumption has been linked to lower bone density, since it can block your bones' absorption of calcium. Plus, if you're drinking a soda, you're choosing not to drink something else - a glass of water, juice, or anything with actual health benefits.

While the satisfying sound of a fresh can of Diet Coke popping open will probably always cause a reaction, I'm better off switching to an afternoon iced coffee. Besides being a great caffeine fix, it's full of benefits, from antioxidants that lower disease risk to helping to ease post-workout muscle pain.

Jennifer Stays Off the Road and Out of Trouble on the Way to Her Afterparty With Gerard

Jennifer Aniston swapped the Donna Karan gown she sported to last night's premiere of The Bounty Hunter for something shorter and darker as she headed to the afterparty at NYC's Tao. Gerard Butler stuck with his blue suit, which perfectly matched his eye color. Gerard was happy to gush all about his costar as he made his way down the red carpet, and he opened up about his recent visit to her newly renovated home. "I had a great night of Mexican food and a whole bunch of people . . . over at her house," he said. "She had a big to-do, and she had a lot of friends over and it was delicious." Jen, sticking to her film's theme, opened up about what's caused her some legal trouble in her own life. "I would say stop signs. Stoplights," she revealed. "Let's face it. I'm not a very good driver."

Beauty Byte: Katie Price to Launch Kids Makeup Line

Wow. I'm a big fan of Katie Price's out-there take on things, but this latest move could potentially cause some uproar amongst her fans.

According to reports today, the glamour model has plans for a children's makeup range, which will use her two-year-old daughter Princess as the cover girl.

"Obviously the story would be she nicks my make-up all the time," Katie's quoted as saying in her TV show, adding that the range will include: "Edible lipstick, (and a) little case with wipes to take your make-up off. You can get a nice case for make-up wipe, lipsticks, blushers and mascara and nail varnishes."

Apparently, she is hoping to take advantage of the recent controversial photos featuring Princess wearing makeup which hit the headlines after she posted them on Facebook.

I'm waiting on further details about this, but I'm unsure what to make of it. What do you think? There's no doubt that little girls are curious about makeup, but is a children's makeup line ethical? I can't wait to hear your thought on this one.

DrSugar: What Will Going Off the Pill Do to My Body?

DrSugar is in the house! This week she's answering a question about going off of birth control.

Dear DocSugar,
I have been taking birth control pills for 10 years and things have shifted in my personal life and I no longer need to worry about getting pregnant. I want to go off this pill, but am worried what will happen to my body and my cycle. Can you tell me what I should expect when I stop taking the pill? Will I gain weight? Will I break out? Will my period be just awful? Also, how long will it take for my hormone levels return to normal?
- No More Pill For Me

Let me take off my lady doctor cap for a moment and share with all of you that I went through this very same issue last year. After years on the pill, I stopped taking it, and will give both some professional and personal advice on this matter when you read more.

To begin, the birth control pill works by preventing ovulation. Once you stop taking the pill, the hormones are out of your body quickly, usually within a couple of days (this is why women who miss a couple days of pills on birth control have a chance of ovulating and getting pregnant!). Another important point to make is that it does not matter how long you were on the pill, from 10 weeks to 10 months to more than 15 years, your body will still be rid of the hormones within a couple of days!

Once the hormones are out of your system, your body will begin to start producing hormones to initiate menstrual cycles. Some women will begin to ovulate in a couple of weeks, whereas it may take several months for other women to begin to ovulate. Generally speaking, your body should be back to "normal menstruation mode" within two to three months after stopping the pill. It is important to emphasize that if you had problems with ovulation prior to starting the pill, you may continue to have irregular ovulation/periods after stopping the pill. Most women with normal ovulation/periods prior to starting the pill will continue to have normal ovulation/periods after stopping the pill. But, some women who had regular periods prior to starting the pill may have irregular ovulation after stopping the pill. The key point here is that everyone’s experience with ovulation/periods after stopping the pill is different!

There is a condition called post-pill amenorrhea (or lack of menstruation) that can occur after stopping the birth control pill. According to the Mayo Clinic, the reason for lack of menstruation in these women is that the body is just taking longer to produce the hormones necessary for ovulation and menstruation. If you still haven’t had a period after three months, they recommend taking a pregnancy test. It would be prudent to also schedule an appointment with either your primary care physician or gynecologist for evaluation. Some women never get a period after they stop taking the pill because they ovulate and conceive right away after the discontinuation. If you do not want to become pregnant, use another form of contraception such as condoms or a diaphragm.

Many women take certain birth control pills to regulate their acne. Once you stop using birth control, you may notice an increase in acne on your face or on other parts of your body. When your body’s hormone levels regulate again, the acne can subside in some cases. As far as weight fluctuation is concerned, it has been shown that birth control pills that are higher in estrogen may cause weight gain and water retention. Therefore, your body may adjust after stopping the pill and some weight loss may occur due to a decrease in water retention. Again, each woman’s experience may be different. Case in point, I did gain some weight after I stopped the pill, but it may have been because of other factors due to the stress of trying to conceive, which is why I stopped taking the pill. Many birth control pills are designed especially to help treat exaggerated premenstrual syndromes or in certain women, premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Thus, some women will notice increased breast tenderness and other premenstrual symptoms such as nausea, headaches and fluctuating emotions.

I'll finish by telling you more about my experience with stopping birth control. I had regular menstrual cycles before I started the pill, but this was not the case after I stopped the pill. It took approximately two months to get my first period off the pill and they were very irregular after that (ranging from 5 weeks to 12 weeks between periods). After seeking consultation with my gynecologist after one year of irregular cycles, I was diagnosed with oligo-ovulation, which basically means I ovulate very infrequently. They could not find any medical cause for this problem after an extensive workup. At first, I felt like something was wrong with me or that I had done something in my lifetime to cause this. But, I now realize I am not alone and that there are many women out there going through the same problems I am going through! Hopefully, if any of my readers are going through the same problem as me, they can feel better knowing that there are many women out there (including myself) that are going through it as well!

He's dressed up and in character to promote Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps, though the movie's planned April release was postponed until September so it can premiere at Cannes in May. It's still sweet to hear him glow about girlfriend Carey Mulligan but also open up about his infamous car accident and the wild side of the financial world. Here's more:

On his relationship with Carey Mulligan: "I never really had anything in my life that was off-limits but with this, just out of respect, I just don't want to fuck around. She's an unbelievably thought-provoking actress, the most talented actress I've ever met in my life, by leaps and bounds. Neither one of us are fame whores. It works out. It's not like we're the premiere couple; we're not the red-carpet king and queen."
On his car accident: "I’d be watching the news, and they’d play my car crash, and every once in a while Kim Kardashian’s sister would jump on TV and preach to me from the red carpet about how to live my fucking life. And I’m so upset, man. I’m so angry. Because this accident was not caused by me. I got hit. I had a green. This fucker ran a red light. And he flipped my truck, and he shoveled it on my hand. Kristen Stewart arrived in NYC late last night causing a funny photographer scene but didn't skip a beat arriving camera ready and looking stunning at Regis and Kelly earlier today. The Runaways star is in the final stretch of her promotional appearances before the movie opens on Friday. She's kicking off her day with Regis and Kelly before continuing over to Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Jimmy and Rob had fun getting bothered a few weeks ago, so who knows what he'll have in store for her tonight. Kristen and Dakota looked fantastic at the LA premiere last week and tomorrow the pair will reunite for their next red carpet so we'll see what they choose for the chilly NYC night.

From An Outside Eye: The Suffering of Plague, and the Plague of Suffering

Here's a lesson on suffering from the OnSugar blog An Outside Eye.

In my last blog I went on and on about how, when I finally succumbed to the plague for the first time this season, I took pristine, unwavering, ferocious care of myself and immediately started to feel better.

But alas, that wasn't the end of the story.

On day two of my plague, I decided to brave leaving the house in order to go to my Buddhism class at Spirit Rock. I bundled up, made a thermos of hot herbal tea, turned the heat as high as it would go in the Subie, and off I went.

That night, our class was all about the First Noble Truth: There is suffering.

As I sat through the dharma talk, I got colder and colder, and sniffier and sniffier, and felt more and more like dying. The next morning, I woke up with amplified, exponential plague.

I totally get that suffering is optional.

I totally get that it's the story we create around our experience that causes suffering.

I totally get that, with practice, we can step back and disassociate ourselves from the suffering.

I know all these things in theory. But in practice it's a whole different story. I'm not sure if it's ironic or apropos that the morning after the dharma talk on suffering, I felt more suffering than I've ever felt in my life (yes, I'm exaggerating, obviously).

Doctors Say Go Ahead and Pass on DIY Pap Smears

DIY isn't a term I like to associate with my health - I'm cool with a DIY manicure, but when it comes to something as important as screening for cancer I'm not doing it myself. After an online pharmacy in the UK launched new DIY pap smear tests that screen for cervical-cancer causing HPV, medical professionals are cautioning women against them. But the reasoning is a little counterintuitive.

Some experts say young women should not test themselves because the tests have a pretty good chance of coming up positive. It gets more confusing. While the positive HPV-test will likely be correct thanks to the high-prevalence of HPV, these doctors say it's better for women not to know so the sexually-transmitted infection has a chance to clear up on its own. Thus, the problem is not with the DIY nature of the test, but with the fact that it would lead to women getting tested more regularly.

I followed the recent, and controversial, updated guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, which suggest women wait two years between pap smears, so I'm not surprised by this advice. Still, it's hard to wrap my head around the less is more approach to preventative care. What do you think?
