Trend Alert: Light, (Almost) White Nail Polish

With the matte nail trend going full force, it's all about polishes with white, off-white, and nearly white tones. While it has the low-shine finish that's so very of-the-moment, it's not a chalky, dull look, but it's not an overly sheer or glossy look, either.

The always-fashionable Gwen Stefani has been spotted wearing a more opaque version during her current tour with No Doubt, and other celebrities, such as Paris Hilton, Rachel Zoe, and Molly Sims, have taken part - each with her own twist on the trend.

To get the look, try Essie Nail Polish in Blanc ($8), a snowy white; OPI Nail Polish in Alpine Snow, a matte white; or make your own light polish into a matte one with Essie's Matte About You ($10). See more celebrities who have worn variations of this white/almost-white trend below.

Trend Alert: Sheer White Nail Polish

History is repeating itself once again with the return of the pale white nail. But this time around instead of being ultra opaque or iridescent, the colors are less intense and more sheer. Just the other night at the Sleepwalking movie screening, I noticed the feminine fingertips of Charlize Theron, Tinsley Mortimer and Beth Ostrosky. Here are two sheer white nail shades I think you'll really get into for spring.

White Satin by Chanel ($19) is a limited-edition shade of glossy white. The first coat is very sheer, but you can layer it to create a more potent polish. And if you're into french manicures, one coat looks beautiful over the white tips.

Barielle Nail Shades in Sensitive ($8) is sheer shell white color that has a high shine finish and claims to be salon-strength. Also, it's tolulene free - awesome.

In addition, Zoya also has a new white shade out for spring called Purity, but from what I understand it's heavier and more opaque than it is sheer.

Trend Alert: White Nail Polish

Memorial Day is just around the corner, and if you follow traditional fashion rules, that means it's officially time to start wearing white. So why not take a cue from Scarlett Johansson and try wearing it on your nails? (It works on real people too: Check out what Retail_therapy has to say.)

Pure white and off-white nails are very trendy right now, and both shades look especially good with tanned skin and summery clothes, like brights and pastels. Here are three products to help you get the look.

OPI Nail Lacquer in Fit for a Queensland ($7.50). This shade from OPI's Summer Australia collection has an iridescent finish.

2009 Q Awards: Pixie Lott

The adorable and soulful singer Pixie Lott walked the red carpet this afternoon at the Q Awards in central London looking as sweet as chocolate pudding. With white flowers distributed through her platinum hair, the only aspect of her ensemble keeping her from looking completely angelic was her pink and black alternating nail polish. Whether she's wearing white nail polish or silvery-white locks, I think we can all agree that Gwen Stefani is truly adventuresome with her beauty looks. Last night, at the Fashion Group International's annual Night of Stars, she was a blast from the past, walking the red carpet with a '60s-inspired look. Gwen's bouffant hair, which was paired with paled-out lips, highly emphasized brows, and super-thick black liner, is atypical of her look, which usually has a bit of a rocker twist. Witchy Makeup Ideas: Sabrina, the Teenage Witch

Over the past few days, I've been bringing you witchy makeup ideas, from Luna Lovegood to Elphaba to the White Witch. Now, let's get a bit nostalgic with Melissa Joan Hart's character from Sabrina, the Teenage Witch. To get this look, it's all about a mid-to-late-1990s feel, complete with a Rachel-style wig, a choker necklace with metallic accents, baubled bobby pins, and of course, some sparkling nail polish to mimic the dazzling effects of a magic wand. An oh-so-'90s brown-based lipstick and thin, yet emphasized, eyebrows finish off the look. For a whimsical touch, pay tribute to Sabrina's snarky cat Salem with some type of black cat accessory, whether it be a ring, an embellished compact, or a quirky evening bag.

Doing Drugstore: Wet 'n' Wild Wild Shine Nail Color

You all know by now that I usually love some Wet 'n' Wild makeup. It's not just the ridiculous name - the brand makes several products that I swear work just as well as $20 or $30 versions. Their Wild Shine Nail Polish ($1.29), however, is not one of those products. I know, you're thinking, "Bella, why are you surprised/disappointed with $1.29 nail polish? It probably costs the same as dipping your nails in ketchup would, and the ketchup is probably more moisturizing." And you're right, my expectations should not have been so high, and I bet ketchup makes a nice cuticle treatment. The shade I picked up, Dream Poppy, perfectly matched my new sexyface lip gloss, though, and has a hilarious opium reference for a name, so I was really excited. But then it took me four coats just to get it sort of non-transparent, and even now, beneath five coats, you can still definitely see where the whites of my nails begin. Is this true of all their colors, fellow Wet 'n' Wild fans? Or did I just get a bad shade/batch?

Fab Tip: Lacquer Those Jewels

Nail polish is created to color nails - we all know this. But that's not its sole purpose. Have you ever considered using nail polish to liven up your jewels? I have a friend who uses it to spice up her earrings - like these Mini Hearts Studs ($14) - and the result is pretty fabulous. If you're interested, the process is rather painless.

Start with smooth-surfaced jewelry (earrings work best but rings, bangles, and necklaces are doable too) to work with. Make sure your item doesn't have rhinestones or a rocky surface.
If you're going to paint with a light nail polish color, it's preferable to use silver or white jewelry. Dark polishes like red and hot yellow work fine on gold.
Now it's time to start painting your earrings with the nail polish of your choice. Apply evenly and use two to three coats to avoid chipping.
Allow to dry for about 30 minutes.
Though not required, you can add a coat of clear polish for extra shine or glitter polish for pizzazz.

A Few Beauty Tidbits From Gwen at Spring Fashion Week

It's 2010 Spring Fashion Week, and one of the first designers to show her collection was L.A.M.B.'s Gwen Stefani. For her show, the models wore MAC makeup on their faces, Vaseline's soon-to-be-released Sheer Infusion Body Lotion ($6.25 to $9) on their skin, and a trendy, opaque white shade of nail polish from Dashing Diva called NYC Fleet Week ($8). Lucky for us, Pop caught up with Gwen in NYC and asked her about her popular Harajuku Lovers line, for which Snow Bunnies ($30) just launched.

"Sunshine Cuties is coming out in the Spring," Gwen dished. And by the sound of it, there's something else up Gwen's perfume sleeve. "There's always something in the works. I do really enjoy doing the fragrances," she added. I guess we'll have to wait and see what she's got cooking in the scent department. In the meantime, I'm off to get my white nail polish trend on.
