Workout Clothes: Fitted or Loose?

They say "clothes don't make the man," but I'll tell you, they really do make the workout. If I don't have my clothes just right, they'll annoy me the whole time and end up ruining my workout. My clothes have to be fitted in order to feel like I'm fully covered and can move freely. Baggy pants and t-shirts just make me feel frumpy and slow. That's just me though, what about you?

I've been reevaluating my budget these days and it's no surprise that my fitness and health habits can be pretty costly. In an effort to save cash but still be able to keep myself motivated I've been on the hunt for cute, and cheap, workout clothes. A friend of mine was telling me that she's gotten a few workout clothes from Walmart, so I did a little investigating. I am loving the Danskin Now knit boot-cut pants ($10) and women's piped scooped tank ($6). Both come in a cute variety of colors and at $16 for the set, you're definitely not blowing the budget, even if you get a few pairs.

Fittingly Mad: Vanity Sizing on Workout Clothes

I hate trying on clothes, and the fact that sizes are all over the map doesn't help matters. Some brands run big while others run small, which means I have to take a pile of items into the dressing room. But I got really riled up while shopping for workout clothes this weekend, when I discovered what's apparently a new trend: vanity sizing on workout clothes.

I've ranted before about vanity sizing, the practice of making clothes larger but sizing them smaller, so people can wear smaller sizes and feel better about themselves. I'm normally a solid medium, but when I was shopping this weekend, I tried on several mediums that were enormous on me. I guess the clothing manufacturers want me to be happy about buying a small, but they're not fooling me with their flattery. (Also, what would a really small person wear?!)

But what really annoys me is that vanity sizing on workout clothes is totally counterproductive. To find out why, read more.

If you are working out and trying to slim down, shouldn't you wear clothes that are an accurate representation of your size? Wouldn't you rather know that you've actually dropped a size, or that you are maintaining your happy size, rather than being tricked into thinking you've changed? Exercise helps us feel better about our bodies, and that's way more real than a vanity size that tries to do the same thing.

What do you guys think? Am I overreacting, or do you also find vanity sizing in workout clothes fittingly mad?

Review: Run Don't Walk Pants

Are you looking for some pre- or postgym pants that you can pull on over your workout gear? I'm always looking for a flattering yet comfy fit and that's what I found in these Run Don't Walk Pants ($110) made by Cloudveil.

I know that may seem like a lot of moolah, but you've got to feel this amazing material. It's super-soft, light-weight microfiber that's smooth on the outside and lightly brushed velour on the inside. They are perfect for slipping on over my workout gear to head to the gym and I also wear them after my workout (since I'd rather not head to the grocery store in tight spandex shorts). Since this fabric wicks moisture and dries super fast, I've also worn them while strength training or doing yoga. My favorite part is that the material is thick enough to keep its shape, so they never look really baggy. Plus I've washed them at least 10 times and they still look like when I first got them (making them worth the price). Might I add that I wear them all the time while lounging at home? Get Your Butt in Gear: Be Present Bamboo Halter Top

I'm a huge fan of fitness clothes made by Be Present. Check out this halter shirt ($49) made from blended fabric that is 95 percent bamboo and 5 percent lycra. It's as soft as cotton, but this fabric is breathable and wicks away moisture. It's also considered an environmentally-friendly fabric because bamboo is sustainable, meaning that it grows very quickly and can be harvested and then replanted again to replenish what was used. Another great thing is that bamboo doesn't require the use of pesticides, so farms can easily be organic. I love that it's a workout top, but it's also cute and not too low-cut. Now that it's getting so chilly out, I'm sure many of you have moved your workout indoors to the gym or your home. That means you can ditch the pants and jackets you were wearing outside and wear fewer clothes. When I work out inside, I get so hot and sweaty, so I need to wear comfortable clothes that can keep me cool and dry.

I love to wear shorts when I exercise inside, and I just found a pair made by a company called Yoga Threads. I fell in love with the material and fit of these roll down shorts instantly. They're made with a blend of 90 percent Meryl/Nylon and 10 percent Spandex. This fabric is made with extremely fine fibers, so it's lightweight, breathable, and has outstanding wicking abilities. Plus it won't retain odor like polyester or cotton blends.

They are unbelievable soft, stretchy, and form fitting, so they allow you to move freely without bunching or riding up. They have a fold-down waist that looks adorable and covers you fully so you don't have to worry about hanging out when you bend over. They are one of the most comfortable workout shorts I have ever worn and were the perfect length for running and yoga (the inseam is 4 in.). Get Your Butt in Gear: be present Simplicity Pant

Some days when I work out, I love to wear tight clothes. I can see my alignment and technique better, and it makes me feel feminine and sexy. Then there are other days when I want to be more comfortable in looser fitting clothes. If you can relate, check out the new Simplicity Pant made by be present.

I'm in love with this company's other gorgeous tops and bottoms because they fit well, and are made of stretchy material that wicks away sweat. These Simplicity pants ($49) are lightweight, soft, and extremely comfortable. I love practicing yoga in them (see me doing Warrior 1, above right), since they allow me to move freely and they also keep me dry.

They have a drawstring waist, no slits on the sides (like many of their other pant styles), and they have darted knees to make moving even easier. The cropped pant style and loose fit around the thighs and lower legs makes these wonderful for working out or lounging in. They come in black, burgundy, concord, red, and graphite.

Fit Tip: Pick a Time to Work Out and Stick to It

I know we all have crazy schedules. One day we have to stay late at work for a meeting. The next day a workout time is usurped by an appointment for a haircut. Then we have a lunch meeting with some clients. Of course those all are very important activities that need to get done, but you can't just keep skipping your workout because of them.

Whether or not you're trying to lose weight, exercise should be a part of your weekly schedule. One thing that works for me is scheduling my workouts at the same time, three to five times a week. Noon is the perfect time for me because I have an hour off for lunch and can eat at my desk afterwards. Maybe 7 a.m. works well for you because you never have early meetings. Or maybe your workout may have to wait until after work at 6 p.m., or even later until after you put your kids to bed.

You need to pick a time that you can easily stick to. A time that can't be overtaken easily by something else. This half hour to an hour time slot is just as important as your other appointments you may have. So be sure to schedule your workouts during times you are always free.

Fit's Tips: If you are going to exercise during work, talk to your co-workers and boss about your "workout appointments." It's common courtesy to make sure it's OK with them, and it'll also let them know that you aren't available at that time.
