Get Natalie's Yellow Nail Polish Look

I never thought of Natalie Portman as being too over-the-top crazy with her hair, makeup, or outfit choices. So I'm somewhat surprised to see her wearing bold, bright yellow nail polish. I guess it's not too outlandish. Pantone, the company responsible for predicting color trends in the home and fashion industries, did predict that the bright and sunny shade of mimosa would be the color of 2009, after all.

As for the polish, I'm not sure if I've embraced its hue quite yet, but I'm digging how Natalie chose to wear it with a crisp white shirt, simple blazer, and dark denim. This shade harkens back to the punky days of the late '70s and early '80s - skinny jeans and black and white striped t-shirt included. Thinking yellow might be in your forecast? Try It: Dashing Diva Virtual Nails

Fashion Week is one of those times, like someone else's wedding, where you feel pressured to look amazing even though no one is paying attention to you. So when I realized my nails were a cracked, bitten mess, I decided to go for a complete overhaul. Enter Dashing Diva. DD is a nail salon that offers a service called Virtual Nails (click through for a list of locations all over the world), during which your nubs are lightly filed and falsies are glued on.

Diva differs from a typical nail salon because of its superior hygiene and sanitation regulations. My favorite being that they give you a set of tools to bring back on your next visit. That and they don't use acrylics that smell like chemicals, you know the ones which often require technicians to wear surgical masks.

At the NY salon, the service costs $35 but that's a small price to pay for nails that are neither toxic nor cause the same kind of damage I'm trying to hide. To find out more about my visit, read more.

My technician, Maria, started by rubbing sanitizer on both of our hands. She then trimmed my cuticles and filed my nail beds. Next, she had me wash my hands and then spent a lot of time meticulously choosing the perfect size nail for each of my fingers, writing down what she settled on for next time. Once the nails were glued on, we settled on a length and shape and she trimmed and filed them. As for the color, I chose a modest rosy shade, thinking that I may as well not call attention to my fake nails, but changed my mind and went for a bright yellow called Anna Banana. After all, when someone asks me if they're real, I can always respond, "real cool!"

Well, well, well. I wasn't so sure that this trend would ever catch on, but if Rihanna's wearing it, most likely fans will soon follow suit. Fab Tip: Lacquer Those Jewels

Nail polish is created to color nails - we all know this. But that's not its sole purpose. Have you ever considered using nail polish to liven up your jewels? I have a friend who uses it to spice up her earrings - like these Mini Hearts Studs ($14) - and the result is pretty fabulous. If you're interested, the process is rather painless.

Start with smooth-surfaced jewelry (earrings work best but rings, bangles, and necklaces are doable too) to work with. Make sure your item doesn't have rhinestones or a rocky surface.
If you're going to paint with a light nail polish color, it's preferable to use silver or white jewelry. Dark polishes like red and hot yellow work fine on gold.
Now it's time to start painting your earrings with the nail polish of your choice. Apply evenly and use two to three coats to avoid chipping.
Allow to dry for about 30 minutes.
Though not required, you can add a coat of clear polish for extra shine or glitter polish for pizzazz.

I've loved this stuff since it first came out, and if there's a drugstore product that deserves a post, it's this one. Sally Hansen Insta-Dry Nail Polish ($5) has, on many an occasion, saved me from losing my mind waiting for polish to dry and ruining an entire manicure out of sheer frustration.

When I looked in my drawer this morning, I had seven bottles of the stuff, ranging from bright, sunny yellow to teal to perfect French-tip cream. I'm not saying they have the most gorgeous colors, because they're not all that special, but for five bucks and only two minutes for fully dry hands, this stuff absolutely can't be beat. This is my day-to-day nail polish. Sure, I might throw on something luxe, beautifully hued, and boring as all get-out to wait on when a new episode of True Blood is on and I'm going to be glued to the couch anyway, but Insta-Dry is what keeps me a happy and productive member of society. Definition

Nail abnormalities are problems with the color, shape, texture, or thickness of the fingernails or toenails.

Considerations

Just like the skin, the fingernails tell a lot about your health.

Pitting is the presence of small depressions on the nail surface. Pitting nails are often accompanied with crumbling of the nail. The nail can becomes loose and sometimes fall off.

Ridges are tiny, raised lines (linear elevations) that develop across or up and down the nail.

Beau's lines are linear depressions that occur sideways (across) on the fingernail. These lines can occur after illness, injury to the nail, and when you are malnourished.

Leukonychia is white streaks or spots on the nails.

Koilonychia is an abnormal shape of the fingernail where the nail has raised ridges and is thin and concave. This disorder is associated with iron deficiency anemia.

Brittle nails are often a normal result of aging, but may also be due to certain diseases and conditions.

Common Causes

Injury:

Crushing the base of the nail or the nail bed may cause a permanent deformity.
Chronic picking or rubbing of the skin behind the nail can cause a washboard nail.
Long-term use exposure to moisture or nail polish can cause nails to peel and become brittle.

Infection:

Fungus or yeast cause changes in the color, texture, and shape of the nails.
Bacterial infection may cause a change in nail color or painful areas of infection under the nail or in the surrounding skin. Severe infections may cause nail loss.
Viral warts may cause a change in the shape of the nail or ingrown skin under the nail.
Certain infections (especially of the heart valve) may cause splinter hemorrhages (red streaks in the nail bed).

Diseases:

Disorders that affect the amount of oxygen in the blood (such as abnormal heart anatomy and lung diseases including cancer or infection) may cause clubbing.
Kidney disease can causes a build-up of nitrogen waste products in the blood, which can damage nails.
Liver disease can damage nails.
Thyroid diseases including hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism may cause brittle nails or splitting of the nail bed from the nail plate (onycholysis).
Severe illness or surgery may cause horizontal depressions in the nails (Beau's lines).
Psoriasis may cause pitting, splitting of nail plate from nail bed (onycholysis), and chronic destruction of the nail plate (nail dystrophy)
Other conditions that can affect the appearance of nails include systemic amyloidosis, malnutrition, vitamin deficiency, and lichen planus.

Poisons:

Arsenic poisoning may cause white lines and horizontal ridges.
Silver intake can cause a blue nail.

Call your health care provider if

If you have pale nails, clubbed nails, blue nails, distorted nails, white lines and horizontal ridges, or a white color under the nails, consult your health care provider to determine the proper way to treat the underlying cause of the problem.

If you have splinter hemorrhages, see the doctor immediately!

What to expect at your health care provider's office

The health care provider will look at your nails and ask questions about your symptoms. Questions may include:

Type
- What is the abnormality?
- Are the nails an abnormal color?
  - What color are they?
  - Are there red lines running the length of the nail (splinter hemorrhage)?
- Are they an abnormal shape?
- Has the texture changed?
- Has the thickness changed?
- Are the nails pitted?
- Are the nails detached?
- Are there ridged nails?
  - Which direction does the ridging go?
- Does the whole end of the finger look enlarged?
- Is there a lack of luster?
- Are the nails brittle?
Location
- Is it the hands?
- Is it the feet?
- Is it only on one side?
- Are both sides the same?
- Is it only one specific nail?
Aggravating factors
- Have you had an injury to the nail?
- Do you bite your nails?
- Do you pick your nails or rub the fingers or toes chronically?
- Are the nails frequently moist?
- Do you use nail polish?
Other
- What other symptoms are also present?

Diagnostic tests will depend on what other symptoms, if any, exist. These may include x-rays, blood tests, or examination of parts of the nail in the laboratory.

Prevention

Do not bite, pick, or tear at your nails. In severe cases, some people may need psychological help or encourage to stop these behaviors.

Keep hangnails clipped.

Wear shoes that don't squeeze the toes together, and always cut the nails straight across along the top.

To prevent brittle nails, keep the nails short and avoid nail polish. Use an emollient (skin softening) cream after washing or bathing.

The vitamin biotin and clear nail polish that contains protein can help strengthen your nails.

Get Ginnifer Goodwin's Lilac Nails

If I had to wager on it, nail polish trends this season will be bright and bold. Think Agyness Deyn's royal blue polish and Natalie Portman's taxi cab yellow tones. I'd also venture to say that we'll be seeing a lot of matte finishes, as well as subdued hues like khakis, grays, and even polish-free nails for a low-maintenance look.

That's why I'm digging Ginnifer Goodwin's smoky lilac nails she wore to a Bulgari bash earlier in the week. This flattering, toned-down shade, which is reminiscent of the insanely popular Sephora by OPI in Metro Chic ($9), uniquely combines the bold with the subdued, and the matte with a creamier finish.

Trend Alert: Teal Green Nails

Lauren Conrad, known for wearing her signature black nail polish, was out and about yesterday at T-Mobile's Sidekick LX launch party in LA debuting a lighter, brighter pedicure of blueish-green polish. Do I spy a trend alert here?

Perhaps this will be the season for bold, vibrant colors. Celebrities haven't been shy about going beyond the standard classic red manicure; and at an event in March we saw Natalie Portman sport some bright yellow nails, opting for a lighter opaque shade of lemon just yesterday.

Deborah Lippmann Talks Nail Trends, Part Two

Deborah Lippmann, founder of Lippmann Collection, had a busy New York Fashion Week. After giving Mariah Carey not one but two manicures during Fashion Rocks (she wore Fashion during the Stand Up To Cancer performance and then Rhapsody in White for her solo) she did the nails at Rodarte, Zac Posen and Zegna (which, if you read my post on nail techs at FW, you know is no small feat). Still, she took a minute to talk to me backstage about a multitude of nail topics, the first being trends.

For today's installation of my interview with Lippmann, I got a genius tip for choosing a neutral nail polish and I discovered a secret from her past, read more.

How do you choose a neutral?
Deborah Lippmann: It’s sort of the same as finding a foundation or finding a lip color. You need to find out if you’re warm or cool. I have two colors in my collection, one is warm and one is more blue based. If you put on the wrong color and your cuticle looks red, it’s not the right color. The warm is called Fashion, the one called You Can Leave Your Hat On has more blue undertones. Even if you’re wearing the wrong red, your cuticle will look red when it dries down.

When switching from a darker nail to a neutral, why do nails sometimes turn yellow?
Deborah Lippmann: Yellowing nails don’t mean you are unhealthy. You may be wearing a lot of pigment in your nail polish. Try a thicker, ridge filling base coat if you are wearing really pigmented colors. It could also be from sunscreen. Or, of course, if you're using acrylics on your nails. Fake nails are how I stopped biting.

I can’t believe you bit your nails.
Deborah Lippmann: That’s how I got into the business! When I was younger, I bit my nails. I started performing – singing, I'm a jazz singer – and when I got on stage, I was holding the microphone and the director was like "No, no, no. Put on a set of nails," and I was like, "[gasps]." I felt so comfortable. It was a really life changing thing.
