Has YouTube Gone Too Far With Graphic Videos?

With thousands of videos being posted on YouTube daily, it's practically impossible for each video to be watched before it is made available online, making it easier for people to publish graphic, violent or obscene material. BBC News, has noted that police chiefs are now urging websites like YouTube to remove violent video footage of children fighting. They argue that YouTube and Google should be filtering material before it is posted. YouTube claims that this would be censorship and is not the role of a private company - they currently rely on their users to flag videos inappropriate when they deem necessary. In a poll conducted by Switched entitled "Should YouTube filter child-fight videos before they're posted?" More than 70 percent of respondents agreed that they should be. Gear Up For The YouTube Video Awards

Last year was a big, ginormous year for YouTube. Starting Monday, in honor of their success, YouTube will be presenting awards for the best user-generated videos of 2006. YouTube users can browse through seven genres including most creative or inspirational, best series, comedy, music, most adorable video ever or commentary and rank their fave short-form videos. Go to You Tube Awards to vote. Polls close on Friday and tropies will be awarded on March 26th. All the YouTube regulars have been nominated including the infamous Lonely Girl 15, Geriatric 1927, Renetto (shown here) and more!

Try Adding Some Annotations to Your YouTube Videos

If you ever watched MTV's Pop-Up Video, then you'll probably feel a little bit of excitement by knowing that YouTube has just added fun annotation functionality to its videos. When you are viewing a video you've uploaded, click on Menu, and you should see the annotation option (they are still rolling it out so not all users may have it yet). And if you find that the annotations start to get annoying, there's an easy way to get rid of them. Here's a vid to give you the gist of what I'm talking about.

Hey, I Take Issue With This News Report!

The masters of satire over at The Onion have this faux news story about a YouTube challenge to its users: Make a video worth watching. The requirement? That it be somewhat watchable, provide a shred of enjoyment for someone other than the people who made the video, that the person who shoots the video have a reason for doing so other than, "I own a camera," and that the person shoots it while sober. Man, they act as if this, this or this never happened! I rest my case.

Turn Your YouTube Vids into Your Own Pop-Up Videos

Oh how I miss my old Saturday afternoon VH-1 standby. . .Pop-Up Video. Learning interesting (and somewhat useless) facts about my favorite music videos always made those lazy days pass with ease. If you were a big fan of the pop-up bubbles that danced in your screen right along with Rick Astley's hips, then you'll love the newest feature on YouTube: Video Annotations.

Despite the boring name, you can make your own pop-up hit with that video you uploaded last week starring you and your buddies LARPing it out in the woods. Control the length, size, and duration that the note boxes appear on the screen for as many useless facts you can provide. Unfortunately, you'll have to do without the bubble popping sound for now. But hopefully they'll add that feature soon, cause it's just not the same without it.

YouTube Pulls Music Videos in the UK: Do You Care?

Music made available on the Internet always seems to draw fire somehow, and unfortunately for the music obsessed across the pond, attempts to renew YouTube's license agreement with the UK's Performing Right Society have come to a fast halt. According to YouTube, the "PRS is now asking us to pay many, many times more for our license than before. The costs are simply prohibitive for us - under PRS's proposed terms we would lose significant amounts of money with every playback," and have since blocked all music videos in the UK until an agreement is reached.

Although I think it's fun to send old music videos to my pals, I don't really watch music videos anymore at all. Do you still get your music video fix from TV, or do you head for YouTube? Do you even care if music videos are on YouTube?

Website of the Day: TubeReplay

Do you ever stumble across a video on YouTube that you wish you could put on repeat? For me, it's usually when I find a hot new song or I have a favorite new music video that I can't get enough of. So you can imagine how excited I was when I came across a site called TubeReplay that will automatically replay any YouTube video. Just copy and paste the YouTube URL into the TubeReplay box and it will keep replaying the video, so you don't have to worry about pressing play multiple times. Perfect when setting the mood with a virtual fireplace, or when you are obsessed with Britney Spears's new song. And be sure to check out more YouTube tips and tricks.
