10 Billionth Tweet Sent

Is Your Twitter Account Private?

Last week, Twitter reached a milestone by hosting its 10 billionth tweet! Unfortunately, the world will never know what the tweet said, since the account holder keeps her account on the down low — as in, private. I'm very curious to see what this person was tweeting about, just like I was super excited to learn what the 10 billionth song download was on iTunes. Like Facebook, some people only want to let their closest friends in on their thoughts and info, but tell me — do you keep your Twitter account private?

I keep my Twitter account private because I like to have the freedom to make the occasional snide or humorous remark about work. A (former) coworker of mine was apparently given a few warnings for posting about work on his public feed - being that we are an internet company, I can understand that they don't want us broadcasting anything negative... well... on the internet. Especially during times when we're supposed to be working. ;) I figure this also keeps me safe from future employers - I'm very secure in my job and don't plan on going anywhere for a while. However, the last thing I want is for me to miss out on a job opportunity in the future because a potential employer has decided to look me up and they find some detail about me that wouldn't impact my ability to be a good employee but just doesn't sit right with them. There is absolutely nothing there that I am ashamed of, but in the business world it is better safe than sorry.

Mine is private, mostly because I'm scared a potential future employer will see it , and also because I got too many spam requests.

I keep going back and forth between protecting my tweets and leaving them open... I can't decide! I like being able to say whatever I want, knowing only 16 or so people will be able to read it, but then again, like others have said, I like to be able to @reply anyone and have them see it! Argh. At the moment my tweets are private, but who knows how long that will last.

No, I don't bother locking my tweets. I really have nothing to hide.

Ditto @karyney. I used to have a private Twitter, but found it really limited my ability to interact with others using @replies, especially celebs and so on who don't follow everyone back. I think Twitter can work as a private space, depending on how you use it.

But, I also use a pseudonym.

Honestly I only keep my account unprotected so that when I @ reply people who aren't following me, they can see it. Otherwise I go through my followers weekly and block random people/spammers.
