2 Billion Worldwide Internet Users

Worldwide Internet Users Will Top 2 Billion This Year

According to the International Telecommunication Union, the number of worldwide Internet users will surpass 2 billion before the end of 2010 — which is just under 30 percent of the worldwide population. According to the ITU, there will be 226 million new Internet users this year, 162 million of whom will come from developing nations, and they will make up 21 percent of the entire online audience. Seventy-one percent of people in developed countries will access the Internet, which means even more people will be at risk of developing an Internet addiction.

As for what's next, the ITU is counting on broadband as "the next truly transformational technology," counting on it to "generate jobs, drive growth and productivity and underpin long-term economic competitiveness."
