Airbnb is no longer for the go-getter advanced travel planner. The network where people rent out their own spaces to strangers is launching a new feature that will help stranded travelers find a place immediately. Last-minute bookings is rolling out today in San Francisco and Los Angeles, with more cities on the way.
Users must first download the Airbnb mobile app (free, iOS and Android). The front page now features listings that are available instantly. Guests won't need to wait for the preapproval process — they just need to be able to pay. Airbnb hopes that both luxury and low-end rentals will be available for last-minute bookings.
Another new addition to the Airbnb app called "Weekend Getaways" is also a great feature for travel procrastinators. It highlights destinations nearby that are a short flight or drive away, to provide some inspiration and spontaneity for folks who just want to escape the weekday life.
Last-minute bookings sounds like an ideal alternative to hotels and inns if you're stuck in a random city while road-tripping or if your apartment starts flooding. But we want to hear from Airbnb hosts: would you open up your home to last-minute guests?
