There are more bicycles than people in Amsterdam as it is the number one form of transportation. Mom's practically teach their kids to ride a bike before they walk. However, hand signals and helmets are scarcely used. Before you straddle a neon bike that blares "tourist," be sure to know crucial bike safety tips. For instance, bike in the designated purple bike lanes (and make sure as a pedestrian you don't ever walk down them). Watch out for oncoming trams, trains, buses, bikers, pedestrians, and the occasional street sweeper. Oh, and don't ever get your tires stuck in the tram tracks. If this isn't enough to scare you away, try biking to the countryside, to see cows grazing, windmills, and perhaps a farmer in wooden shoes. Otherwise, bike through bohemian-filled Vondelpark, the largest park in Amsterdam, which features "The Fish" sculpture by Picasso.
