Apple Banning Porn, Bikinis, and Skin from iTunes App Store

Apple Bans Sexy Apps From Store: Way to Go or Going Too Far?

We already know that Apple has a tough app approval system, so it should be no surprise that they don't allow porn apps in the iTunes store. But how far is too far when regulating the kinds of apps you can buy? Apple has recently been cleaning house, and clearing out all of the apps that contain boobs, skin, or that are "sexually suggestive" in nature. This even includes images of men and women in bikinis, athletes in figure skating tights, and "skin" in general. I'm a little surprised that Apple is taking this stance, especially with magazines preparing their moves onto the iPad when it hits stores next month. I suppose Sports Illustrated and GQ are out? What's your opinion on the matter?

I am glad to hear that they are at least paying attention to it! It will probably settle somewhat. I want to let my kids browse the app store because there are so many cool apps in it that they would love but being bombarded with 99.9% nude pictures in app descriptions has just been too much. I think a good solution would be to tie in the parental controls to the app store. If the restrictions on the device say that it can only download apps rated for 12 year olds and under, then don't allow the app store to actually show any apps that are rated more mature than that. Then you would have the choice to just turn on the restrictions if you are offended by them (which I personally am) or turn them off if you want to see them. That is my wish anyway.

Getting rid of truly "trashy" apps is fine in my opinion, but the figure skating outfits and such is going too far. I used to figure skate - the outfits are designed that way for a reason and it's got NOTHING to do with looking sexy!

I'm glad they are getting rid of all the trashy, cheesy stuff, but figure skating is a step too far. That is just ridiculous.

porn is the lifeblood of the internet & the driving force behind developing new technologies (have to get the porn faster), Apple is taking a big gamble with this one. :D

I don't want to see them but don't like anything that smacks of censorship. I agree some of them are just trashy.

It's annoying to scroll through apps and have 10 out of 25 being about boobs or scoring chicks. I'm glad they've banned them. Way to go.

sex sells, I can see why they would want to ban ads that are trashy looking but sports figures in too tight clothes? Come on people.

Maybe they want to clean everything up for the kids who will become a growing user base for Apple -- especially with the launch of the iPad soon, and gaming on the iPad itself. A lot more people will be flocking to the iTunes and App stores. iPad news and updates: http://iPadLot.com

I certainly won't miss seeing all the craptastic fake porn apps that litter the app store. Porn doesn't bother me but those apps are so terrible - at least the ones I keep seeing in top 25 lists. Figure skating tights and bikinis might be pushing it a little, though...

figure skating tights are hardly the same as a sports illustrated photoshoot! but they can do whatever they want, i guess, it's their company
