Apple Healthbook App

Is This What Apple's New Health App Will Look Like?

It's no secret that Apple has its eye on fitness. After Apple filed a watch-like patent last year, it looked like iOS-powered arm candy was in our near future. But a leak from 9to5Mac points to an entirely different health-focused launch: an iOS 8 app codenamed Healthbook.

According to 9to5Mac's sources, these screenshots are very similar to what Apple's healthcare and fitness-tracking app will look like.

The user interface is seemingly modeled after Passbook, with "cards" representing different categories of health. Like the popular Fitbit, Jawbone UP, and Nike+ FuelBand apps, Apple's Healthbook includes activity and sleep tracking. Technologies utilizing the iPhone's accelerometer to detect movement and sleep cycles already exist in the marketplace, so that's not surprising.

The most curious Healthbook "cards" are bloodwork, heart rate, blood sugar, blood pressure, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation. With the exception of heart rate (which can be measured using the iPhone's camera), calculating these data points requires an external device.

After the debut of Samsung's heart-rate-sensing Galaxy S5, Apple has a lot of catching up to do if it hopes to be a major player in the mobile fitness space. Head over to 9to5Mac for more images from the alleged new iOS 8 Healthbook app, then let us know — is Apple moving in the right direction?
