Cell Phone Rant

Cell Phone Rant: Get Off Your Phone For Service Sake!

This cell phone rant comes from GeekSugar community member exchequette:

I've worked in a couple of different coffee shops in the past and had the experience of trying to take an order from someone who's on the phone gabbing away. "Oh, yes, Honey, please don't forget — Oh! yes I'll have a coffee — Honey, don't forget to put the kids' — What? Oh! Um, a small, I guess — Ok Honey, sorry, I'm at [coffee shop] don't forget — Oh! And cream and sugar, please!"

Really? You can't finish your call before ordering, or at least put it down long enough to finish the transaction? It is especially frustrating because this is your customer, and you have to be nice to customers or else they won't come back.
Now I work as a receptionist at a visitor check-in security desk for a large building. The people I check in every day may be clients for businesses we have in the building, but they're not my customers, so technically I don't have to be all that nice to them, but I really want to be professional at all times. To hear the rest of the cell phone rant, and to give your two cents about what exchequette should do, just

I'm working perfecting my techniques for dealing with people in a professional manner when they are on the phone or if their phone rings and they answer it while I'm checking them in. Just ignoring someone who's yapping on their phone and trying to give you orders at the same time is not as easy as you might think, but I'm working on it! If anyone has any tips or tricks for dealing politely with this type of rude person, I'd love to hear them!

I agree SO much I have only answered a phone once when I was being waited on it was an important call i was waiting for i told the person on the phone to wait a moment AND I apologized to the person waiting on me. It is so rude to the person working and people around you I don't want to hear about your dinner plans or if little jimmy has a baseball game.

I've used something similar to what dexaholic mentioned. It works! Another trick, is to ignore the person until they get off the phone. Do "busy" work (cleaning/organizing) or stare off into the wild blue yonder like you don't see them. This is a HUGE pet peeve, especially in smaller stores, because they tend to take customer service more seriously. How is someone supposed to serve you properly if you are gabbing on the phone?

If someone starts placing their order/checking in while simultaneously having a phone conversation, tell them very politely and with all seriousness "oh no, it's ok I'll wait until your conversation is finished, it sounds very important" and then stand there and wait. They will feel embarrassed and likely put an end to their conversation.

This is one of my biggest pet peeves. No one needs to be 'that' connected. If is an important call FINISH IT before you come in 'my' store! I had a customer the other day that was standing at the counter talking on her cell with the speaker on no less! She was done with her business in my store, but still stood there letting everyone listen to both sides of her conversation. Customers standing behind her were just rolling their eyes. I asked her to please take it outside. She sort of huffed out, but I don't care. Some people are completely oblivious to how rude they're being. :(

hahahha Zuli, I do the same thing. Usually they hang up and I just say "I didn't want to interrupt...what can I get you?" Generally they apologize... some people get rude, but they're usually the rude ones that are rude no matter what.
