Chinese Cell Phone - iPhone Copycat?

Technology and design are a funny combination. The truly unique ideas are few and far between and every couple of months one company will come up with a truly innovative design, concept or feature that everyone else will replicate, try to one-up and brand as their own. From the great Vista vs. OSX debate, to the never-ending iPhone and touchscreen debate, it is sometimes hard to decipher who came up with what first. TeamSugar user Sinsational contacted me about Meizu, a Chinese cell phone that she found on Gizmodo, which just happens to look a whole lot like the iPhone. "Could it be for real?" asks Sinsational. Apparently it is.

The concept renderings of the M8 PMP/cellphone from Meizu features the same touchscreen, one-button, everything-in-one appeal of the iPhone. No word if these are real or not, but something about it looks really familiar. For more about the phone, just

According to Gizmodo, this player runs WinCE 6.0, includes a 3-megapixel camera, 3.3-inch VGA+ screen, GSM support, TV-out and more. "I don't know whether to think this is fake, or a real knock-off. This isn't the first time Meizu has borrowed design elements from another company," says writer Travis Hudson.

I am pretty sure that Apple licensed that touch screen technology and all others are licensing from the same source due to IP issues internationally. The reality is that EVERYONE is going to have a touch screen phone. That is not what makes iPhone different. It's not just the UI, it's the content available (in a closed garden), carrier deals (including a partnership with Cingular in the US and other market-leaders elsewhere in the world) and how Apple allows you to connect to its apps on the MAC. This is key. They aren't just a phone, they are iTunes (back on your Mac) and they are your connection to apps back on your Mac. All other handset manufacturers offer you just a phone and handset design is only part of the winning equation--it comes down to who has the best apps and who gets the best content deals.

according to meizu's public forum: meizu revealed the photos of m8's design elements (i.e. screen size and resolution) on 01.05 (with a thirteen hour difference from est) whereas iphone was revealed at the mac world conference on 01.09 (01.10 in china). there are photos of design drafts for the meizu phone as well... on another thread, a user pointed out the similarities between the iphone and nokia 6111. so who is copying who? ----------------- sirene de la fete

I don't think it's copying -- it might be a private label thing

yep, most cellphones exported and manufactured in asia are pretty much advance, for one thing, GSM is standard here in the philippines. analog's been out for ... almost a decade now (a lot of people were, i think, cloning accounts then)..ANYWAY, dang, this phone really looks like the iPhone.

american cell phones are far behind japanese ones. almost everyone there has a camera phone and they all play mp3s. the ability to check your email from your cell phone isn't that special either. stoopid american cell phones.

I think it's the other way around...If anyone's copying anything , it's apple copying all the phones already out there. The Nokia N95(October), Cingular 8525(2 years ago). Many of the Japanese phones already have video conferencing between phones. But then those phones came out 10 years ago. They probably walk and talk by now.
