Do You Ever Purchase Refurbished Electronics?

I'm forever finding deals online for "refurbished" iPods, laptops and various other electronics, but I haven't yet taken the plunge and purchased one myself. I must admit, when I'm constantly seeing these "as good as new," half-the-price special offers, it gets hard to turn a blind-eye to this world of refurbishments.

If you've ever checked out the refurbished section on the Apple site, you'll notice all your favorite Apple products at a fraction of the price. What's great about Apple's refurbished products is that they come with a one-year warranty, include all the proper documentation, are repackaged, put through an entire testing process and given a new part and serial number. . . Not too shabby, right?! On that note, do you ever buy refurbished electronics?

I was recommended a refurbished Macbook by a worker in the Apple store. He said it's all he buys and all he tells his family & friends to buy. I haven't had a single problem with it and I've had it 1 year & 8 months! With the refurbished discount, plus the corporate discount I get through my company, I got it for $899!!!! A steal of a deal! And recently my bf & I purchased a point & shoot camera refurbished. Everything is working out great there too!

Wow! I had no idea refurbs were so popular and reliable.

Refurb doesn't necessarily mean there was anything wrong with the product. Once an item leaves the store, the warranty period starts ticking, and even if you turn right around and return whatever it is you bought, the store cannot legally sell it as new.....this will depend on your State, of course, but for the most part, this holds true. Think Christmas gifts that were returned (giftee needed the cash more than the Mac) or the Nano given as a gift and then exchanged for a Classic. Regardless of whether the packaging was opened or not, the store has to send the product in for refurb, which in most cases, like Apple, requires a new serial number for warranty purposes, a check for all accessories, and rigorous testing. Granted, there are some sleazy stores that will put a returned item back on the shelf without checking to see if anything is wrong, but they're far and few between. That said, most of my PC is refurb, and I've had no problems with any of the components I bought.

I sure have! I brought a refurb TiVo, Sansa e250 and a VCR (back in the day). They were great deals and I am very happy with how they work. Oh, and I brought a Compaq too which I have had for over 7 years. ::knock on wood:: You would never know that they were brand new!

I tend to buy refurbished products because they have to go through all kinds of rigorous testing to be sold again. Most products straight from the assembly line don't. The one time I bought a new Mac, it arrived with a bum hard drive. Just bought a refurb MacBook Pro and it's amazing.

I brought an ipod refurbished. It worked great and I love it. I can say Apple is great for getting thing like that. They do a good job. Apple I trust. Anyone else, I don't know if I would trust them.

I've bought a Dell refurb, but would only refurbs from trusted manufacturer sources. Anyone on ebay claiming it's "refurb"-ed is probably just looking for a quick buck.

I bought a refurb MacBook Pro about a year ago... and I have had very few problems. I had to get a new adapter cord, but that's not even part of the computer! I saved so much money and it had no scratches or any visible sign of being used. The AppleTV we bought was a refurb too, and no problems either! One guy at the Mac store in town gave me an earful about buying a refurb laptop, but seriously, why not? Back up your data *in case* something goes wrong... otherwise... no reason not to. :)

i have bought a refurbished: printer, imac, and also a "classic" ipod 30gb. i saved probably about $1000 total on those 3 things (and they are things i was going to buy anyway) and never had any problems - i fact, since the printer was a refurbished one i got free paper and 2 ink cartridges (this was before i had my laser printer)!

i haven't before, but i certainly would in the future. i like the idea of reusing at least some of the parts of things that can otherwise get tossed out.

I bought a refurbished Mac and my phone is also refurbished, so far so good. I think the key is to buy from quality companies.

I trust Apple's refurbs enough to warrant purchasing, but for most other things I stick to new. I think it's rare to find a good enough deal compared to new to bother with, esp. since online prices are usually pretty competitive. I've also bought used on occasion to really save some dough.

I got a mp3 player as a gift. I couldn't figure out why the songs were getting jacked up on it, I kept having problems. Then my husband finally noticed there was a sticker on the player that said REFURB. Ha, who knew?! And thanks Mom and Dad for the (crap) gift!

To be honest, I look forward to getting new gadgets too much to get a used one. I think it's brand-new condition is part of the experience! My boyfriend mistakenly bought me a refurbished Logitech DiNovo Edge keyboard on ebay (he didn't notice that it said refurbished) and well, it wasn't pretty. It's no fun to get a USED item when you're expecting a new one. Luckily the seller was awesome and took it back and I got a new one from the store. Oh, but if it was something for inside my computer or something that wasn't fancy, I'd buy used.
