Do You Still Keep Photo Albums?

It used to be, you got your film rolls developed (and what came out was what you shot, no choosing what to print beforehand), and put your faves into your photo albums or frames. Then you kept them around, pulling them out when you wanted to reminisce over the plastic and paper pages filled with photographs.

Now, our photo-lives are completely different; we pick and choose which digital shots to keep and print, and are often more selective about printing because we know we can always access the photos electronically. Things do still get framed — but we have to decide, regular or digital frames.

And it seems to me that one old staple - the physical photo albums - have fallen by the wayside. Sure, you've got your Picasa and flickr "albums" online, but do you still pull out that old binder, and stick your photos inside? I sure don't, sadly, though I do still keep my childhood and school albums around.

What about you? Do you still keep physical albums, and if so, are you still making new ones?

Of cource digital photos is future, but there is a problem with free space on hdd and backup of them. Second problem - is pay sites for photo sharing. These 2 problems stop digital influence. I found for me Advanced Jpeg compressor - with that soft i easy compress pictures wihout quality loss - so i save free space on hdd and also backup pictures in net on their free photo sharing - so you've got not only backup... last argument for me - it's free

I was looking at some of my old photo albums and it made me sad that I don't have any recent photos in albums. Most are online at Facebook.

I have kept albumms for my sson from birth.he enjoys looking at them and talking about the pictures. i think there is something about having the physical book to look through.

I jsust got married and would really like a wedding album, but all of our pictures are digital. I don't really want to have to go to Kinkos to get hundreds of photo print outs

Yes. I love pictures and being able to touch them as you stare at them. With my wedding earlier this year we got about 1500 unique images from the photog. Add in another 1000 from guests. I am working on layout software like a yearbook editor to have photo albums printed and bound for us and family. Some images will be printed individually to go in a special album my husband and I sought after that is mounted on a wall to be taken down when you cruise through it.

Yes I do but they don't get updated very often.

I do keep albums, but I use my computer to build them digitally, have them printed in a beautifully bound book and sent right to me! None of that developing and sliding photos into annoying plastic sheaths.

Every couple of months I order a ton of prints of my digital prints to put in albums. The way technology evolves, you never know when you might not be able to get your pictures for some reason. I just assume have hard copies...

I have actually completely given up on photos as media - these days I prefer to use my camera to capture video, which I then edit using either iMovie or Final Cut. Sometimes photos still make it in to the final mix, but the usually have a zoom effect or a pan applied, all with backing music, of course! The interesting thing about it though is that the principle is the same - you winnow out all of the bad shots, and you try to tell a story of an event with what is left. I probably only go to the trouble of making 4-5 a year, but its enough that when I look back now (I've been doing this for 5 years or so), they really do make up great memories, in much the same way as a photo album.

I kept all my old albums (I didn't even bother scanning the photos). I'm planning to get my digital photos printed into photobooks and keep a digital backup as well. I think photobooks make great coffee table books.

Sometimes. And I still have photos printed to have them put in picture frames. I really don't like the new digital picture frames.

Even when I took my pictures on roll, I never put them in a album...only on very special occasions such as immediate-family weddings etc. I haven't touched a new photo album in years, and I don't plan to, so long as I have my external hard drive.

I used to be so into putting together albums after major events. Now, even though I sometimes miss having something physical to flip through, I don't feel that I look at pictures enough to justify printing them all out.

I had all my albums digitized by a company called Life Preserver. My kids were beating the old albums up (they were being loved too hard) and I decided to do high resolution scans of the pictures, back them up 3 times (@brdwaystarlett) and then my kids can do whatever they want to the album. Because you just can't beat the tangible feeling. A couple great things about Life Preserver, they have very high resolution scans (600dpi is standard, which I hear is like twice the normal resolution), and they keep a backup of my digital files for me for life (for free). Thought that was pretty nifty. I think their website is www.digitallifepreserver.com

Until they make an unbreakable computer or memory storage system (which they won't because then there's not profit turnaround), I don't care how many back ups I make, I will ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS have all my photos printed and cataloged. Same with everything really. Nothing will ever be as reliable as a well stored piece of paper... laminated... in an album... also laminated.

I like to have something physical about my memories. So having on actual book is nice, also my daughter loves to look at them and turn the pictures.

I think it's important to order your digital photos and keep albums... so much of my family doesn't get online like they should to check things out (even though I keep a weekly update blog just for them), so when they come to visit, they want to see, and it's a lot easier to bust out the photo albums than it is to have everyone huddled around the laptop screen. Plus, I think it's always good to keep a hard copy of important things and pictures are probably some of the most important things we have.
