Do You Text Message While Driving?

There's no denying the fact that text messaging has fundamentally changed communication, but it's a dangerous feature. It requires two hands (for most of us), mental effort and some focus. Enough focus that it's risky — and even deadly — operating a car while getting your text on and services have popped up that prevent you from being able to do both.

There's a cute scene in It's Complicated where John Krasinski's soon-to-be sister-in-law backs out of the driving typing away and he reminds her in a sweet fatherly tone to cut it out. Unfortunately, it's a reminder most of us need often. Back in 2007, 48 percent of you said you text while driving "every once in a while." Have times changed?

Texting while driving is a habit for me so I was able to teach myself how to text while keeping my eyes on the road, but my one hand has to be off the wheel in order to text.

i don't. i've also been hit by a texter while walking across the street when i had the right of way...soo...i'll reserve my opinions of those who do, since i don't like to speak ill of others.

for all you that text while driving, red light stops, whatever your excuse is, you are jerk, you are an jerk without exception. i'd use harsher language if i thought it would pass here. i don't care if you think you're not an jerk, you still are. nothing is so important as to take your attention off the road and put others, their children, their families and who ever might be unlucky enough to be sharing a road with you in danger. you should have your license taken away and never given back. texting while driving is more distracting and more harmful then drinking and driving. why even get behind a wheel? what could be so damn important that it can't be belated 10 minutes until you arrive at your destination? stay the hell off the road around me.

I did before when phones were simpler because I used to be able to do a lot of it without ever looking at the phone! Since I had my blackberry (last phone) and currently with my MyTouch I wouldn't dare do it. I think that it is too dumb of a mistake to make. I don't want to have to live with the guilt of killing someone because I just "had" to respond to a friends text.

I don't. And I don't understand why people would think it's a good idea in the first place. When I saw the first PSA, I was like WTF? This is common sense! Then I saw a girl driving down a road that's mostly ruled by pedestrians (it's closed to most traffic because it's on a university campus), no hands on the steering wheel, and not looking up AT ALL, texting. Then I was like OH. And felt sad that if she got in an accident, she'd be fine, but kill someone. And then I lost all faith in humanity.

It's now illegal to text while driving in my state, as well, so I only do it at the red lights.

Its now illegal where I live, so I'm going to have to remember to keep my BlackBerry in my purse and maybe throw that in the back seat so I'm not tempted.

I don't do it while actually driving but I have been known to do it while at the stop lights.
