Does Facebook Affect Your Feelings About Class Reunions?

I always thought I'd go to my ten year high school reunion. It was just something you do, and my high school friends and I all dreamily talked at graduation of meeting back up when we were grown-ups. But something happened. I have absolutely no desire to attend.

The reason? MySpace. Facebook. The New York Times claims that the advent of these websites — which allowed us to stay connected, and updated us on what our old classmates were doing — has caused alumni magazines to suffer.

Why read them when you can log on and confirm that the snobby cheerleader never made it out of your hometown and now works at a gas station? And furthermore, why go anywhere to be in the same room, when you can snoop on everyone from the comfort of your office chair?

I already know who's married, who has kids, where they all work. Curiosity = satisfied. What about you?

even though you are updated on how your former peers, it would still be interesting to see them in person to see how much their personalities changed and what not

Neither Facebook nor any other sites in which you can stay connected with old classmates has affected my feelings of class reunions or of old classmates, for that matter. The only thing that bothers me about the idea of a class reunion is the status of my career and my life. Not saying I need to be famous and rich, but I would like to feel a better sense of purpose in my life and happiness by the time my high school reunion comes around.

the only reason i am somewhat interested in hs reunion is for the people I CAN'T find on facebook/myspace to wonder why don't they have one and is there some reason for it (like maybe there life sucks now and they don't want anyone to know it?) just a thought.

To be honest I probably would not have been interested in going anyway, but I'm probably in the minority on that one.

I have no interest in Facebook or reunions. Anyone I wanted to keep in contact with I did in RL.

I'm not on Facebook and I had no interest in going to one of my high school reunions.

Honestly, I think I'd still look forward to going to a reunion because I just like meeting up with people who I haven't seen in awhile. Facebook can't really satisfy that for me ;)

It has nothing to do with facebook - the people I care about, I know. The other people, I guess it is interesting, fortunately our Alum magazine tells stories, way more interesting then everyday facebook stuff

I have some friends who I haven't seen or heard from in a long time and would like to know what they're up to. Not everyone is into Facebook and Myspace, you know.

No, the fact that most of my classmates sucked affects my feelings about class reunions.

I can't wait for my next reunion! I went to a boarding school, and we were all a pretty close-knit group. I'm still friends with a lot of my high school friends (one of them was even the best man in my wedding), thanks to IM and things like Livejournal. I'm not going to my next reunion to find out who has kids and spouses -- I already know that stuff -- but to party with my high school friends like it's 1999. Except this time with more booze 'cause we're all legal. :-D

seeing it in real life isn't the same. plus i have 13 facebook friends, and will delete the account (it was deactivated from january to present) once i am back to school from summer. i am keeping it during the summer it to exchange photos with two girls from my class. i think maybe 1 person from my high school is on that list. facebook ruins the element of surprise in those things.

I don't think I'll do the 13 hour flight to get back to the town where I went to high school for my high school reunion when the time comes. And I'm not on facebook, either. I have nothing against the people I went to high school with, and high school was okay to me especially compared to elementary school, it's just not something I'd get excited about. The people I really want to see are my old college buddies. Those were the people I seriously had the most fun with. We kind of scattered all over and lost touch after school.

I'm with neko on this. Never been overly excited about reunions before or after facebook. I pretty much talk to all I need or want to from those days.

i live with my best friend from high school, the only one i've kept in contact with. i miss my old friend that i had from grade 7 to end of 12, though...we started college together but then i dropped out after a semester. :( i'd go to find her, mostly. Mine is supposed to be this summer, since i graduated in 1998...but i can't find out anything about it! many people from my high school moved to where i live now, but i haven't run into anyone.

I was always a lone-wolf type in high school, especially when I transferred to another school after my sophomore year was over. However, it's always fun to see what other people have been up to, especially when you don't have to travel to 'East you-know-what' to squelch your curiosity. Thank goodness for technology :-P

I don't use Facebook, plus, I didn't care too much about my class to bother with reunion :p but we'll see when my time comes

Because of keeping up with classmates through FB or Myspace, I'm mostly curious to see people from high school who aren't on those sites and see where they wound up.

I wasn't online friends with my classmates when I went to my 10 year, so I definitely had to go back and laugh at their pathetic lives.

This is the only reason I really use Facebook- to keep track of old friends and coworkers. But I really am not interested in hanging out with them or anything.
